I'm not against TJs, but it's hard to find them in the same price range as the XJs.
Went and looked at a 96 XJ today. It had the 4.0 and auto trans. 155k miles on the clock. The guy is asking $3.5k which is about 900 more than KBB says it is worth. It ran well and I couldn't find any rust. It rode about how I anticipated it would, even though it was the first one I've test driven.
Looking at this one helped me decide I'd like to go 97 or newer to have an interior that is not AS dated. There is a 98 XJ Limited in Roanoke with 120k on it that I will try to take a look at while in the area this weekend.
CL ad provided here with the caveat that you agree not to buy it. It looks to be pretty freshy. The seller is asking $4,875. If it as clean as it looks in pictures and I can get them down a bit, I may pull the trigger. I figure the leather interior and overall condition of the vehicle may be worth spending in the neighborhood of $4k. The $4,875 asking price should yield a car with less miles on it, so I wouldn't feel comfortable unless they came down.

If it has heated seats check em. They are famous for dieing.
I'm meh on leather in XJ's but it is clean. I wouldn't pay more than 4200 for the thing but that's just me. I see too many fancy Chrysler electronic extra's that are eventually just going to stop working. Which, in the end you don't need because.. it's an XJ
Did you ever end up getting anything? Didn't see your sig change but I haven't been on here in awhile. To follow what others have said nice TJ's & LJ's bring the jack. The last TJ I sold was a 2.5L 5-speed hard top with a little rust but otherwise nice and I got like $6,100 out of that with a 155k on it. Last XJ I sold was actually to a fellow in the club, Tyler.M. That was a nice low mileage example, like 68,000 miles or something. Nice ones are out there but they are getting hard and harder to find. I would think a clean XJ Sport with around 150k on it (4.0L, 4x4, 97+) would be a 3,500 - 4,000 vehicle. A Country or a Limited might pull a little premium on that but not much.
I will be selling my wife's Grand Cherokee here soon as she will be taking this Overland I am driving. It is a 2003 Grand Laredo X with leather. 4.0L runs out great has just under 150k on it. 2in Rough Country with 31in Cooper AT3 tires. The tires are about 10/32 tread and brakes have about 10k on them all new at same time. Has tow package and protection group (skids and hooks). Thinking somewhere around $5,250 (KBB Retail $5,750), with a fresh oil change, state inspection and a 50/50 warranty for a month. It had 125k on it when she got it and it has been a great car. During the time we have had it I have done a cat back (OEM type) and replaced the crank sensor. I think the carfax is clean but the right side has been fixed (both doors replaced) and the paint isn't perfect. I would be open to offers of course, it has been a great car just got her something with some more flash.

I still haven't pulled the trigger on a damned thing, but I am keeping my eye out. It's a lot harder to find time to actually go look at vehicles for sale while working full time. This was easy in college, when I could stop at the bank to get cash on the way to meet somebody at 3:30 PM on a Wednesday.
