It's what FlimFlam would do.

Your friends would never understand why I drove 450 miles round trip for a slice of pizza in the OBX last weekend.

Or why I'm spending about the car's value to fix my stupid 19-year-old Mazda.

He then proceeds to laugh at me for like 10 mins straight because I watch Top Gear.
Well first tell him Top Gear is the number 1 show...in the world

And to be fair if he drives a boring econobox I could see why the 2 hour drive to Nova would be boring. It'd be like someone declaring sex is boring because he's only ever masturbated to JC Penney's lingerie ads.

You genius man. You just figured out the fundamental issue.

They have no interest. Why? Because they have no exposure. I know for me, since I was little I've been surrounded by cars. My dad, mom, aunt, cousin and uncle are all car enthusiasts. Growing up I've been around stickshifts, Evo's, sti's, BMW's, car magazines, garages etc. I've felt the awesomeness of a turbo and supercharger. I've felt the power. If I didn't turn out loving cars something had to be wrong. Majority of other youth didn't have that. They just had Suburban's and Volvo's loft them from the mall to the movie theater. They literally don't know the amazingness of having your head thrown back. This is what we must change. We must ignite the spark in them. Expose them to the power. We need to put them in a sports car [passenger and driver seat]. They must know what it's like to have all that power at your hands and feet. They need to crave being on a track, crave racing, crave uniqueness, crave the knowledge and the know-how, crave OWNING. It's our duty to save the automotive industry - from the dealerships to the aftermarket products to the tool shops to the garages to the 80yr old man tryna pass his old e36 onto its next caretaker. Once we invigorate my peers with that initial adrenaline rush, we've accomplished our mission. We've made cars cool again!

the perfecto storm of "new things to keep me interested," boring ass "new" cars, and tree hugging have screwed a generation (or two) out of a growing national past time... wasting natural resources on a road trip/leaving burn out marks/learning to do donuts/etc and in turn it has turned them into the worst drivers in the world

the lack of interest in cars must be directly related to their ability (or lack there of) to merge on the fucking highway.

grow a sack and use the happy pedal people!

This is true. The OG's (2000's) and a gen or two after had it damn good. 240SX's, DSM's, EG/EH/EJ civics all had double wishbone front suspensions. NA Supras were 10 grand. 300ZX TT's were 12. There were cheap cars, there was surplus cash, there were engines overnighted from Japan. All the ingredients for a tuner culture, the 60's all over again.

Now...not so much. The Industry has done all it can to make really GOOD cars that you can't touch. Every engine is tuned to its peak, or so complex to get power out of that no one wants to bother. Manifolds integrated into cylinder heads, turbochargers controlled by a computer that can't be tuned, or weird weak links that break as soon as you make 10hp over stock. Combine that with the mind-numbingly boring peoplemovers to be found on dealer lots today, the shithouse economy, ethanol fuel and this weird greenwashing iGeneration and...disaster. (Just like the 70's malaise)

Maybe we'll see it again, maybe not. :dunno: If we're going to be the last of our breed we should try to be the best.

the way they drive in Turkey, there should be WAY more accidents. They drive that way due to the sheer volume of cars in Istanbul. The rest of Turkey is pretty tame to drive in.

Here, in an area half the population... most of the traffic is caused by people not being able to merge. I see it every day on my commute and its painfully obvious on the two lane sections of I-66. Merging onto the highway is a weakness of our drivers and that relates to their ability to change lanes in general.

They dont love their car, they dont care about driving or driving well, they would rather tweet/text/etc while driving.

I went for the experience, the drive, and the culture. And the 34 other BMWs. The point of the trip wasn't "OMG this pizza so good om nom nom."

in my house we have:
-driven 300 miles round trip to "wheel" a total of 10 miles (and it took all day)
-left fairfax at 2am just to go find a sky full of stars (we ended up on top of a mountain in WV)
-left fairfax at 10pm to go to philly to do a cheese steak taste test (on the motorcycles)
-saturday mornngs usually start with a discussion of "what direction" over breakfast... and we just go.
-average about one weekend long road trip a month... acura/honda/jeep/motorcycles... we dont care

hell i drive to harrisonburg to buy things... or to lancaster in jeep... when we know shipping will be cheaper.

I commute 70 miles a day along I-66 and its fucking awesome to look at the mountains getting their color back and to see the clear blue sky. everyone else thinks the commutes too long and doesnt see the beauty and enjoyment you can have from it.

Honestly this is what I live for. Everyday I find an excuse to get in a car/bike/jeep and just go. Fucking go man. See shit. Stop and pull over. Find the worlds best BBQ in some podunk hole in the wall. For me, just getting out there and seeing shit has always been the motivation. Windows down, tunes blaring...

Yes yes yes. I agree 100%

Baltimore is only 45 miles away but I drove there just to eat this past weekend. In a few weeks I'll be driving to philly for that exact reason you mentioned

I think the Road & Track article kinda hits it on the head, but in an obtuse way.

It's not only cars though, many "Millenials" don't seem to give two shits about ANYTHING (note: I didn't say ALL). I very rarely see them so incredibly engrossed/in love with a concept/topic that their feelings are evident to those around them. Seriously, if you've ever hung around somebody that is passionate about a topic and able to express it, you can probably attest to the fact that it can be intoxicating and make you want a piece of the action. "Kids these days" are so friggin jaded - it seems like they either think X is impossible for them to obtain so they don't care, OR X is so common around them that it doesn't actually excite them. Nobody takes the time to actually pass on their own passions to this generation, and thus it is lost.
I think that both parties are at fault though. The youngins need to come out of their shell, be more open with others, and engage themselves. Us old farts need to keep working at prying the shell open if we want to pass our passions down, primarily through exposure and talking to them.

Going back to the article, I think a lot of us would have absolutely shit their pants at any of those opportunities. This kid got them all, and could still barely be bothered to show any excitement about it (based on the text - I can't watch vids at work). I'd love a follow-up article on him 2 years from now to see what actually does get him excited. I bet there is no single topic that he would actually come up with to talk about with any form of passion (and I say 2 years from now because that would make him a Junior in college and thus more likely to have become an adult with his own opinions and passions).

Going back to my porch now to guard the lawn. and ponder if I'm the only one that's noticed this...

It sure beats eating at the same five shitty chain restaurants that are five minutes from your house every weekend.

Find some back roads (so you can avoid the beltway) and just... go.
