Yeah you're right, it's just upsetting to know that it wasn't a "freak" accident. I.E. a big ass bird flying onto the track and causing an accident or something like that. It was caused by the reckless behavior of one person that took the life of another. It's hard to maintain my zen with shit like that.
Like Jake said, I'm not sure I could instruct. I've thought it would be cool to eventually pull together a cheap 325i HPDE car and work my way up through HPDE just to get to the point where I instruct just to finance going out and having fun in my own car. It's just a huge gamble you take when you climb into someone else's car, not knowing the condition of their car, their skill level or what their mindset is. I have a ton of respect for you guys that do it.

Jon's description of the "hyperdrive wreck" is exactly why "heard from a friend who heard from a friend who" is so dangerous. He's basically describing the Reid/Calderon wreck, (maybe) which while pretty vicious, happens sometimes during racing.
Regardless, I'm sure NASA will have a statement so maybe calm on the speculation of what happened?

yeah, I read "pits" as "9" but regardless, no one in this thread was there. Until there is an official statement, I think it's prudent to keep the speculation of who did what when to a minimum.

Official NASA response currently is No Comment. We'd like to not speculate on this forum until NASA releases an official statement. I get that your friend was there Jon, but some of us would rather not be associated with this line of discussion.

In the linked article it says it happened on Jefferson. If it was Jefferson then T7 is the one that leads onto the front straight and past the pits.

I got the finger wag saturday night about safety equipment. Sylvia has changed the priorities on the integra. If you guys want to talk safety equipment at length i suggest someone start a thread and start digging up build pictures from Evan's Miata and RJs Integra. There are some additional techniques i've seen over the years to up the game.

Well in regards to the hyperdrive wreck -- that was a side impact. Considering most of the people here drive their car to the track, in the same situation they would be SOL even with a bolt in 4-pt rollbar. Would seats + harness have helped in that situation, not entire too sure about that -- but possibly. If you are suggesting people to add a cage to their track car/drive to the track car then you are opening up another can of worms about the safety of street driving a full caged car.
The Todd's cage vs. X's cage will be a never ending battle by internet roll cage safety experts, but it just shows you especially can't skimp on safety equipment when you get to the level of w2w racing.
But in regards to the actual event -- good times hanging, glad to see some of peeps I haven't seen in awhile. Eff you Jake for rolling the piss out of me on Sunday. I feel like Ricky Bobby right now -- I just couldn't get a feel for the car + get back to where I was driving it last year. Need m0ar seat time... oh yeah, and I need to fix a bunch of broken shit. I set a personal record for the amount of crap I could break in a single track weekend this event.
Jake Wrote:I have a lot of respect for instructors who are willing to strap into a car with someone they've likely never met, to be hauled around a track all day. Not sure if I could do it or not.
no kidding. my first HPDE, i treated my instructor like a celebrity considering what they commit to when they step into an unknown car with an unknown Joe Blow who's dying to go fast and has no idea what he's doing. they have all the respect in the world from me and will continue to. students, buy your instructors their lunch/dinner and send them a thank you note after the event, they earned it.

i have a feeling that if he ever recovers from the mental grief and trauma, he still wouldn't go near one on his own accord. if i did something like that it would ruin the hobby forever for me.
i doubt any car would have taken a center punch well, but the GTO is an old chassis (it was obsolete in Australia before it even came here) and doesn't have side air bags. you get 2 tons moving fast enough and its going to wrap around something real nice at 50mph, let alone twice that.
more unhelpful hearsay: GTO drivers' wife and mother in law ran across a hot track to him from the pits :dunno: holy shit if that's true....

That would not be surprising at all to me if they sprinted onto a hot track.
JustinG Wrote:That would not be surprising at all to me if they sprinted onto a hot track. Yeah you have to figure that friends and relatives would not have been given a briefing on paddock safety and to never, ever run onto a hot track. Then consider how many more people are at the track for Hyperfest.
Even if you do tell people not to run onto a hot track under any circumstances, in the heat of the moment a lot of people don't have the emotional self control to not do that when a loved one is involved.

aside from the accidents.....ANOTHER HYPERFEST FIRST!
Entering/Leaving the paddock yesterday you may have noticed that a section of the fence along the bridge was somewhat missing. (Leaving the paddock, on the left, the fence before the bridge was MIA.
Apparently a Mustang (spectator no one from NASA) decided to take a short cut onto the track at 1:30AM. I was told they were hitting the pipe a little too much Saturday night. Upon inspection, over 1lb of weed was found in the back seat, and they were promptly escorted away by Jefferson County's finest.
^amazing. Any tasering incidents/entertainment?
Terrible to hear of the news. I had a great BSR instructor for my hyperdrive back in '12 but I do remember being more than a little sketched out by that track. Not that you can't lose your life impacting armco or a tire wall, but there should be no reason for a track in 2014 to have exposed trees. Perhaps some upgrades are in order.
I dunno about any tasering.I think there were a few drunk in public arrests, but for the most part everyone seemed to behave.
Heard that guy also blew a .19.

On Sunday we were marveling at the waterfall of shitty decisions one would have to make to get oneself into such a situation.
1.) Decide to bring large quantities of weed & booze (while underage) to an enormous event that practically has it's own police force
2.) Imbibe all of it
3.) Decide to drive car
4.) Decide to drive car fast
5.) Decide to leave illegal shit in car
6.) Crash car
7.) Flee from scene of accident, again, deciding to leave all your illegal shit and empty brewski cans inside
7.) Return, to scene of accident
What a colossal fuckwit.  With stuff like that you just have to be thankful they took themselves out in a relatively harmless way instead of doing something equally stupid later and hurting other people.

My friend and I got a kick out of all of the random people asking us questions like we were workers or something while we were hanging out in the Tech shed when everyone was running everywhere.
