I knew that was coming
i'd do it.
K04 is the perfect street turbski for that car. insta-boost and torque for days. i drove an A4 1.8T with that setup waaaay back in the day and it felt like getting boot stomped in the back of the head when the turbo went ham at like 2500 rpm. some old saying that goes, the devil you know is better than the one you don't, etc etc...

The other problem is that I'm all over the place. I've sent emails today on a 997, an audi TT, was chasing after a TT RS last week, also S2000, S4 sedan, S4 Avant, RS4 sedan... not to mention whatever oddball shit I'm watching on BaT, like the 968 that didnt hit reserve last week.
its whatever the slot machine lands on when I pull the lever is what I'll drive next. My only problem with the a4 avant is that buying that back, adding nice suspension & K04 I should have just bought an S4 avant.

Honda-Tech purchases are top notch. Nothing ever goes poorly. You should do that.

That, and I've never spent more than $26k on a car before. Seems like a very 'adult' purchase that makes me uncomfortable. Despite having a super nice house, a marriage, a respectable job, I'm still more comfortable showing up in a VW or operating on the fringes with a vintage honda motorcycle than a Porsche. Maybe I'd just rather flaunt pink shirts than expensive things. See signature for that, though, and that's another thread for another time. I fired off another email for a 997 this morning, though. There's also a high mile car locally on craigslist that's (relatively) dirt cheap that I might see if he's around this weekend.

have you ever driven a 997? i'd try to find one at CarMax or some other used car dealer if you haven't driven one before and just take it for a spin. It could be on a pedestal that could bring disappointment (although i somehow doubt this).
I totally get the allure of a sweet expensive car. I'm not sure why i've never really had a hard-on for the 911s, but i've never driven one. I really like the idea of having a car that you can thrash around on the street without getting into too much trouble (the GTI was and the z3 is great for that). After riding sportbikes the excitement from cars kind of died down a bit. The Ridgeline purchase was a bit of a stomach-churning purchase for the price alone, but like Scotty my mind justified the long-term purchase since it checked a lot of boxes right now, it's perceived reliability, and resale value in the event i don't want to keep it around. i think the way to go is to somehow become an automotive press journalist and get various cars every other week to test drive. Jake, you've done good.

I've spent time in a 997. They aren't an air cooled Porsche, but they are fun to drive... and have things like power steering, air conditioning, and radios. Driving my dad's for a week was special in a way my 911 could never be. The physical dynamics was nothing like I'd driven before or since.
I think trying too hard is in the execution, provided you aren't driving a supercar. I've only been to three car shows in six years and I'm not tearing ass down the street or parking in Pike Place Market. Just go about your business and who gives a shit what anyone else thinks. You are at the best time in your life to own a 911. It could also be nice when you're retired, but you have the least amount of responsibility you'll have for a loooong time, should you consider a family at some point.

As much as I've really enjoyed the time in your and other vintage 911, I will admit a 997 is going to be faster, more comfortable, easier to live with and wont try to kill me... and easier to resell later, probably. That and the air cooled market has taken a one way trip to the international bizarro station and doesnt seem to be returning from orbit anytime soon and I flat out cant show up with $40-60k cash needed for one that I'd want to own (i.e. not a project/rust bucket) since aint nobody gonna give you a loan at reasonable interest rates for a 40+ year old car. I also think that market is highly speculative and while a 997 is still depreciating there's a real risk of losing your shorts on the older cars right now. I guess the only question left is, a 997.1 S or a 997.2 base? I've also decided I'm in love with Lapis blue, which makes the hunt harder but I seem to get off on that anyways. |
