Also, to add to the conversation... vodka doesn't end in tears for me but my stomach doesn't like it much, so I try to avoid it unless it's in a bloody mary.

My go-to at a bar is either a gin and soda (tonic is gross) or manhattan. Definitely a fan of tequila, either in a good margarita (fuck margarita mixes) or just to sip on. There's a bar we go to in the OBX that does tequila flights and I really enjoy the whole experience there.

I want to stock up my little at-home bar once I move so this is a timely thread!

If y'all like Teqila, have you ever been to the Bebedero in Charlottesville? 

They make one of the more interesting drinks I've had the pleasure of drinking, the "La cura loca", a Mezcal Lemon Cordial dropped into a Three Notch'd No Veto, with some worm salt and a mezcal-soaked scorpion. The scorpion tasted not as bad as I thought, but the rest of the drink was goddam delicious. A++, would drink again.

My summertime favorite is the Orange Crush (other crush variations are also allowed). Only fresh squeezed juice. None of that canned/bottled shit.

1 fresh squeezed orange
2-3 ounces of vodka (Tito's preferably)
1 ounce triple sec or Grand Marnier
Top with 3-4 ounces of sprite

2 2L 7Up!
1 handle bottom shelf gin
1 bag of ice
5 lemons
5 limes
2 Turkey Basters

Combine; get drunk.

Yeah it's an eastern shore thing, mainly MD but some parts of VA like to play as well. Started getting popular in the city within the last decade I would say. Done right, they are amazing. Grapefruit crushes are also A+.

I also am really into this specific drink at a local restaurant which I fear won't last long because the food is just okay and the service is subpar. The lemon-mint combo with the Elderflower is so interesting. I'm a sucker for Elderflower liqueur.

Founding Farmers Gin Infused w/ Herbal Tea, Elderflower Liqueur, Lemon Sours, Fresh Mint

And bourbon is made from corn (51% or more).  Whisky is made from grain.  Not the same.

BROADLY, If they country it's from has a "e" in it, it's Whiskey. Ireland, America, Kentucky. If it doesn't have an E in the name, it's whisky. Scotland, Japan, Canada, Australia. (Again, broadly. Czech Republic and Sweden both make...whisky.)

Yes, Rex, you're right in that.  But my point was more to take it a little more seriously than "lolz i dunno brown booze".  

Each one of those types are different for sure and have their own character.  And how you use that makes your cocktails good, or shit, or amazing.

Then order one of those? If you order something complicated, time consuming, and obscure there's a non-zero risk of you coming off as a cockbag. I'd either order what I knew I liked OR POSSIBLY ask my bartender for the drink he makes the best.

Each one of those types are different for sure and have their own character.  And how you use that makes your cocktails good, or shit, or amazing.

This is an important point. The idea of a cocktail, for me, is to turn up/down different characteristics of liquor for a desired taste effect. Anyone who's ever played with Jellybelly combos, this is no different, really. 

You definitely SHOULD educate yourself on different types and flavor profiles (Isla scotch vs, say, Macallans for example. Wildly different.) so you know what you're after when you're making a cocktail. Or, you know, drinking neat/with water/with ice, etc. Some of this is experimentation, some research, some happy accident. 

A sort-of good example is Cachaça vs Rum...both are made from sugar cane, but they taste pretty different, and could make the same other ingredients taste pretty different.

If you're ordering a drink, asking for a Manhattan is a good way to figure out what kind of bartender you have.  I went to Chicago last year with my other half and we had a fancy night out at a fancy steak restaurant - they used a drink cart and mixed drinks tableside that were way more complicated than anything I'd make at home and they were really good - fun experience.
