Well after about two months with the Shadow, I’m wanting something else. Dealing with a choppy, 30 year old, carbureted V-Twin engine can be cool, but doesn’t itch that scratch for me anymore. I rode Alex’s R6 on the Blue Ridge Parkway and I think that solidified my desire. So here’s where I’m torn:
I absolutely love the looks of super sports, the high end ludicrous speed, and full tuck position on them. BUT, I have a bad back and I’m not sure if riding one every day will irritate it to a point of needing to sell for the sake of my chiropractor bills.
I don’t love the looks of the 650’s I’ve seen, and not sure about the performance of them on the top end or at future track days. BUT, the riding position is way more comfortable going around down, although one I sat on didn’t feel like it was easy to really go full tuck which concerned me slightly.
So opinions on what y’all have done or would do? Anyone else deal with back issues (like legit spinal issues)? What path did you go down and did you regret one or the other? Help me out because as the title says, I’m young, dumb, and worst of all, an impulsive buyer

It depends on your size and height, really. If you have a bad back, a full tuck triangle is going to make the bike really unpleasant for even basic jaunts around town. You'll never want to ride. To get to the fun stuff it's usually a 30min ride but if you're back is already aching before you get there, you're going to have a bad time. I had a race prepped R6 for awhile and while it was fast as hell, I rode it way less than my SV mainly because of how much pain it put me in. I'd recommend finding a super standard/naked that is a lot more comfortable and can do the fun roads just as well as your supersports. Every manufacturer has a line, especially in the last few years as nakeds have gotten crazy popular.
I second an SV650, just be aware it is considered more of an economy bike so you'll have to deal with a less than stellar stock seat and handlebars. I always felt like the Hunchback of Notre Dame riding it until I got some risers for the handlebars. Fortunately, the SV is like the Miata of the motorcycle world and has a massive aftermarket that can fix most of your issues. I had one for a while but ended up selling it when I found a 919 that is very similar in design philosophy but has a much better motor and is a little bit more comfortable.

another thought - all the lightweight racing guys have moved to the Kawasaki naked 650 - so if you want to track it, plenty of parts available.

I’m going to go ride a 650 and 600 back to back to see which I prefer more. I didn’t feel a lack or torque in the R6 where I would be wanting more around town, but maybe riding a 650 will bring that out. I have read that the ZX6R is a little more upright than the other super-sports so that’s what I’ll ride first. Then onto a FZ6R although I’ve read that is very mushy in most regards, which would just end up disappointing me.
Also looking at an F4i as it seems a little more in the middle ground. Any other bike suggestions on what to look at and ride for comparison? Also anyone have one of these near Nova or Hburg where I could ride it and see?

Look at the FZ07, F4i, SV650, Ninja 650R. Also, top end speed should be the least of your concerns on the track. You'll find that power/top end speed is simply a cover up for good riding technique.
FZ07 intrigues me. At some point I'll get tired of riding a 45 year old ratty honda.

In my opinion, yes, you’ll grow out of it so quick it will be a waste of money. Also keeping up with highway speeds will be no bueno. Unless you just have one lying around
