So the past two days were insanely windy. Friday was 60 mph gusts all over the area, Saturday was less so but still annoying. I picked the racecar up from Mach V on Saturday morning, hung out at Joey's all day and towed it home around 4 PM.
My confidence in using the Range Rover as a tow vehicle for a 20ish' enclosed trailer has been greatly reduced. It was being blown all over the fucking place, as was the trailer. Granted, it was super windy so maybe that's just how it was going to be regardless yesterday, I saw other large vehicles (actual tow trucks and so on) being blown around too.
Would a 1/2-ton pickup do any better in that scenario, or would it be white-knuckle no matter what? I get no sway from the trailer normally and have plenty of power and brakes for it, but yesterday was unnerving enough that I contemplated another F-150.

Yesterday was worst case scenario. I wouldn’t worry too much.

Ummm there were wind advisories all weekend and MD wasn't allowing trailers (even semi trucks) on plenty of bridges. You probably should have waited to pick up the car but like Adam said it's unlikely you will be driving in wind like that very often.

Agreed with Adam. I saw a video on the news of a tractor trailer being pushed up onto two wheels by the wind up there. That's nearing mild-hurricane force winds, I don't think it would have mattered what you were towing with

Yeah, our F350 would get pushed around quite a bit in heavy winds, granted that was a 38 foot trailer, but it also weighed quite a bit more than your car trailer. A 1/2 ton might would be better than your heavy ass SUV, but I don't think the trade off would be worth it until you went to a 3/4 ton. I agree with everyone else.

I don't think the truck has anything to do with it. It's the fact that trailers are giant sails to catch the wind. That's why they don't allow tractor trailers on the key bridge or bay bridge in high winds. 295 also didn't allow empty residential trailers yesterday.

Yeah, definitely. There was a marked difference if I was dealing with a head/tail wind (easy to control) versus a crosswind (not).
The RR weighs nearly 6k lbs - a new F150 or Ram would weigh a bit less, so weight of truck isn't so much a factor. Wheelbase helps for general stability but I don't have any sway going on. It's just the "sail" factor. But, like Taylor said, I think I'd have to end up in a 3/4-ton truck to see a huge difference.

Saw tractor trailers blown into the median on 81 when coming home Friday. The trailer was literally bent in from the wind, which probably caused the crash in the first place. Wouldn’t worry about range if these trucks couldn’t even handle our “Severe Wind Storm” lol

I hate towing, but, I would not have picked up the car yesterday.
Riding a bicycle was bad enough... i nearly shat my pants when barreling downhill into a turn with a 30mph tailwind, the wind shifted to a cross.

Even a 3/4 ton would be a bear in that wind. A coworker took his 3500 dually to pick up some cattle on the eastern shore area and said he was getting pushed all over the place. I wouldn’t worry too much about it, like Adam said, you were already worst case scenario.

I started my new job and started doing some math with this beast. After paying for the big 105k service and having it inspected, I started thinking more about the future of Our Lord of Supercharging.
The steering rack was going to need replacement eventually (expensive), the seats needed some dye work to look presentable, and as the odometer climbed up and up, I would surely end up doing the shocks/airbags, maybe a wheel bearing or two, the rear brakes, and whatever the hell else a 105+k mile truck needs. Will it eat the control arm bushings? Will it need a water pump?
New job will have me busier, the Rover didn't pull the enclosed with enough authority (even without wind, it was just kind of "squishy" everywhere, not confidence-inspiring) and frankly, I'm really fucking tired of higher-mileage daily drivers. The gray F-150 spoiled me - it only needed oil changes and a set of brakes in 30k miles. My 128i was similar. Both of those cars let me just go out and do whatever else, didn't require spending time working on them (or paying someone to do it), and were excellent to drive with newer technology. The E46 M3 and Range Rover were super kickass, but left me worried about "what next" - even with everything in good working order. I'm fine working on the racecar and cheap toy cars, but I want my daily to be an appliance, however cool of one it may be (does this mean I'm getting old? shit.)
So, the Range Rover got traded in to Battlefield Ford on Saturday with 105,700-ish miles. New thread coming, that should be more of a "journeys and experiences" thread more than "look what broke!"
I adored this Range Rover and it treated me very, very well. It towed the open trailer like a boss, was very capable off-road (minus those couple of rocks), was a perfect city/highway cruiser, and looked great doing everything. If it pulled the enclosed trailer better, I'd feel better about putting money into it as needed and just have the shop do whatever work. But I decided it wasn't worth keeping, given the payment + maintenance cost and the towing limitations.
So long, buddy. It was a good, if short, run.

Good call...I wouldn't want to own a super high mileage example let alone one you are putting through the paces of towing/heavy duty, etc. They are great motors / transmissions but it's the other stuff like you said that would start to nickle and dime you when it breaks
