  Project beater e60 530i
Posted by: turboneticsSS - 01-18-2016, 05:41 PM - Forum: Member's Projects - Replies (34)

So I picked up an e60 for an awesome deal from a friend's dealer, it has some small front end damage from a fender bender, but its only cosmetic, needs a headlight, hood, and I want to throw an m sport front bumper on. 2006 530i with 124k miles, black on black, Ill get pictures up in a bit. Guess its just part of being an MM'er, need to buy a BMW at some point. Just needed a daily since my boss told me people from the neighborhood next to my office building have filed complaints about the camaro being too loud, my guess is the cam is too deep, and I start work at 5am.

I have done 0 research yet, could we make a homebrew Exocet?
Posted by: BLINGMW - 01-17-2016, 12:07 AM - Forum: Technical Discussion - Replies (12)

I have a lightly crashed Miata sitting in my front yard that is in decent mechanical condition (so I'm told unless Taylor is a big fat liar).
[Image: IMG_2016-01-09_12-21-46_zpsfaecxiw8.jpeg]

An Exocet kit costs ~$8K. So that's a good reference point, but let's just call that "too expensive".

Is there any way I could turn this Miata into a poorly executed Exocet for say, $1K? Just keep the suspension and drivetrain mount points, do some light modeling, have some current students apply some math I forgot, start cutting and welding some DOM tubing to replace most of the "car", add some aluminum seats and enter it in GRM's 2016 challenge? I'll ask, but their rules that allow "Any four-wheeled, production-based vehicle that was originally sold as a passenger vehicle" don't scream "NO" to me.
If this has already been attempted / done, point me in the right direction. I promise to never attempt a track day or crapcan race with such a poorly designed and built vehicle, it only needs to survive autocrosses and a drag pass and then I'll slap some farm use tags on it. Bonus points for it somehow having more power and/or that I can semi-legally drive to the event with my goggles and leather aviator helmet on. Maybe that's the 2017 version. :dunno:

  GFORCE KARTING MARCH 19!!!!
Posted by: *insertusernamehere* - 01-15-2016, 05:06 AM - Forum: Events - Replies (80)

THE TIME HAS COME...

THE TIME...

THE TIME FOR KARTING!!!

We have decided on Saturday March 19th. I spoke with Gforce and she reminded that over the years we've typically done a Sunday. If there is enough interest, we can make it Sunday the 20th instead. But for now, it is the 19th.

Where we go to get some grub will be figured out as we get closer. Richmond has a variety of restaurants and sports bars, we can take our pick anytime!

Student carpool will also be sorted out as we get closer. There will be seats for everyone.

Prices are $30 for students and $40 for alumni and friends of the club! We need $800 in order to reserve the date so everyone get your money in ASAP. Our gmail is <!-- e --><a href="mailto:madisonmotorsports@gmail.com">madisonmotorsports@gmail.com</a><!-- e --> feel free to paypal us or hand it in person.

LETS GET OUT THERE AND TEAR UP SOME PAVEMENT, IT'S BEEN WAY TOO LONG!!

UPDATE: The event will be from 10am-12pm. Students will meet in R1 at 7am and roll out at 7:30am putting us in RVA at 9:30am. This should be enough time for us to gather and get the fun rolling. After the event we will be going somewhere for lunch, most likely, Capital Ale House like last year unless people want to try somewhere new - recommendations welcome.

  2011 Ford F-150 FX4
Posted by: Jake - 01-13-2016, 12:17 PM - Forum: Member's Projects - Replies (204)

The Denali absolutely destroyed my wallet last year, and already was set to do the same thing. I looked at how much I was throwing out in maintenance over the past year and realized "hey, I could be driving something newer, with way less mileage on the odometer, that needs no crazy maintenance, that has more gears in the transmission."

Did some looking, figured out my budget, and decided half-ton pickup or bust. Pre-Denali, I was lusting after a newish Grand Cherokee, but I grew to appreciate the size and abilities of the Yukon's half-ton chassis. After the Denali experience, I was all sorts of "fuck GM" and honestly, I haaaate the 07-13 GM pickups. Awful styling, both inside and out.

Looked at some Ram 1500s (thanks for the tips/info Jeff!) and Ford F150s. The Ram interiors were kind of blah vs. the Ford, and I couldn't afford an EcoDiesel. So, set my search on the 2011-2014 F150. My "must haves" included 4x4, tow package with integrated brake controller, and front buckets (the Ford bench seat that folds to be an "armrest" is just sad). I didn't care about cab vs. bed length, was fine with most colors, cloth vs. leather, etc.

Found this FX4 and it was priced way high at Fairfax Honda. Got home from work yesterday and they had dropped the price significantly, bringing it to the low side of market value. Jumped on it and so far I really like it.

2011 F-150 FX4

  • Sterling Gray over black cloth
  • Coyote 5.0L V8 with 47k miles
  • 4WD
  • Crew cab, 5.5' bed with spray-in liner
  • Max Tow package, rated at 9300 lb towing
  • Electronically locking rear diff
  • Factory skid plates protecting front diff, transfer case and gas tank
  • "Extended Range" 36 gallon fuel tank (stock is 26)
  • Factory optional 20" rimzz because 18's are for plebes

It's fairly simple inside - manual HVAC, no navigation or backup cam, no sliding rear window, no sunroof - but I kind of like that aspect of it. Less to fail as it ages. And I don't daily drive it, so who cares if I have air-conditioned leather seats. It's still a nice interior to spend time in. I may look at adding a backup camera in some capacity, but it's not a super-pressing need.

I dunno about you guys, but I have a new favorite song at least once a week and thought it'd be fun to have a thread to drop them in. It doesn't have to be "new", just new to you, and all genres are welcome.

  The Blue Phoenix - E46 325i
Posted by: Senor_Taylor - 01-10-2016, 02:18 PM - Forum: Member's Projects - Replies (400)

... and just like the phoenix, another car rises from the ashes of Michelle the Miata.

I busted my butt over winter break and worked as much as I could get away with, all in anticipation of getting another car. Looking at the Miata all busted up in the barn every time I'd go to work was very sad. Channing and I worked out a deal that involved me trading him the Miata (plus cash, obviously) for his wife's 2002 325i. I couldn't get someone to tow the Miata until the same day I was coming back to JMU, so we made it all in one trip.

The condition of the car is definitely "Daily driver with 3 kids" as I found 3 clif bar wrappers and about a pound of glitter in the rear floorboards. After a quick wash, vacuum, seat cleaning, headliner re-gluing, and headlight restoration, it's a pretty sharp looking car and definitely a pleasure to ride in. Plus the straight six is a beautiful sounding engine with plenty of torque down low so it's insanely easy to drive. Overall I'm very satisfied in my first 24 hours of driving it. It's a far cry from a beat up, 24 year old Miata with a leaky roof. This is my first time having a European car, a straight six, 4 doors, a big trunk, plus a laundry list of things I'm not used to. I'm not sure what I'll do with this car. For now, the plan is to just drive it until the wheels fall off, which may be next week. :dunno:

Father-in-law passed this down to me when he got a new one, but it's overkill for anything I'd want to do in the near future. If I can put a few bucks toward a 110 wire feed, I'd be happy.

found a couple on CL for 150-175, so maybe $100 to MM?
