Chase Lewis - Vice President
Posted by: Rupertfl - 04-04-2017, 01:08 PM - Forum: Officer Elections ‘17-‘18 - Replies (3)

My name is Chase Lewis and I’m going to be running for Vice President

If you don’t know me I’m the guy who buys broken cars. I have been in the club for two years, current officers have tried to get me to run. This year I have the time to finally be an officer. I frequent the forums quite a bit, but rarely post because I know alums have way more knowledge than I do. Also I participate in almost every event and meeting. As for motor sport experience, I have little, but my dad has a lot. He auto crossed and tracked an escort GT, which he won a lot. I’ve been trying to get into autocross my current vehicle, an r56 JCW, but it has been broken each time I want to run. I have bought broken cars in the past, but have fixed them. I fully restored a 66 F-100, did almost everything on my mk1 rabbit, and have done a lot on my current car.

Enough about me here’s what I will bring to the club.

First and foremost people who want to drive should go to motor sport events. We need to show people it is more than just driving around a parking lot. I also feel MM can spread out a bit. Such as sending some people to big car shows and other car events. Every time I went to a show in my rabbit people would always ask about my MM sticker. We need to spread the word about MM, I get many questions about MM from people on campus. I want to make MM full of passionate drivers who want to learn the right way.

I’m a pretty responsible person, I have to be considering I have work, broken cars, and school. I do not like sitting around, so MM would fit nicely in my schedule. Definitely any work put on my metaphorical plate would get done fast and complete.

Finally, considering my car is basically a tool truck and I love fixing cars, I am down to help any MM’er or friend in need of assistance or, not to sound condescending, any knowledge I can provide. Also I enjoy digging through junk yards trying to find that last factory bolt so the judge won’t take a point off (car show stuff).
Overall, I believe I have a lot to add to MM this year. I would push for more motor sport events and shows like we’ve never had before. Also, I have a ton of mechanical knowledge, building motors, wiring, and suspension. I’m extremely responsible and will try my best to get anything I am ask of done quickly.

I think I would a good fit for Vice President.

ELECTIONS ARE TOMMORROW, PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS

What's the point of the election threads if none of the alums are asking questions?

 1989 Turbo II Mazda Rx7
Posted by: boosteddorito - 04-03-2017, 04:13 PM - Forum: Member's Projects - Replies (29)

Now that I am graduating in 4 weeks and I have three weeks and a thesis due this week I figured it would be a good time to post my car. 11 months ago on a Wednesday when I was scheming on Craigslist I found a turbo II Rx7 for sale in Detroit with 103k miles on it. It had sat in the garage for 9 years and didn't run. I figured this would be a horrible investment so I drove 11 hours up with my brother picked it up and drove straight back towing it on a uhaul. After about 2 hours of popping my main 120 amp fuse and swapping wires around it fired up and lived. I did the basic rotary health maintenance items such as, deleted the OMP (oil metering pump), and premixed the hell out of the first couple tanks of gas. Once I got it fairly reliable, after cycling through 3 alternators, I started making it more livable. That included redoing all the brakes so it would actually stop, and cleaning the shit out of it. I don't even know where to start writing about this car. Literally everyday something is happening to it that needs to be fixed. That said when it runs it rips and is hella fun. Until it blows I'll flame on. Rx7s have been in the family for a while. My dad bought a 88 gxl 2+2 brand new and drove it till he was t-bones in 2006. My brother bought a 87 gtu in 2016 and we T2 swapped it.

Current Mods:
- Huge ass exhaust that shoots fireballs (HKS Apexi N1)
- HKS ebay blow off valve
- Rtek 1.5 chipped ecu
- Air pump delete
- BAC delete
- Custom intake pipe (Old one was hella cracked)
- Some head unit and subs
- ABS delete (Abs pump leaked a reservoir of fluid a day... Lots of rust)
- Maxspeeding rods 24 way adjustable coil overs( Absolute shit )
- ACT stage something clutch

Current Problems:
- No AC sucks ass in the summer
- Front coil overs making noise I think its the spherical bearings... Plus they ride horribly
- Intermittent check engine light I think it is from a bad ground on my knock sensor
- Hesitation around 3000-4000 RPM most likely from bad injector ground
- Little rust on the sunroof and back hatch
- Paint is aids
- Really need alignment
- Blown turbo seals means lots of smokey and PCV spray
- Bad input shaft bearing means whining in all gears except 4th

Car Goals:
- Get it painted and all sealed up so no more rust
- Solve suspension aids so it actually handles
- Front Mount Inter cooler so I can do more than one pull without heat soaking
- Larger injectors so no leaning and blowing up
- Boostttt

I didn't mean for this to happen. It wasn't supposed to happen. But alas, it happened.

I bought Andrew Castro's old 250cc cruiser for fewer dollars than it has cc's 8)

It's not perfect, been dropped a few times, but really I think its about as perfect a starter bike as you could ask for. It's pretty slow, but still peppy and gets something like 75mpg. It burns some oil and apparently likes to shake itself to pieces on the highway, but has new tires and solid brakes. It runs well and will be easy to work on. I'm still trying to figure out what the long-term plan is to fix it up a bit. It came with a new tank to replace the dented/dipped one, but it's off a 2009 and needs a different gas cap which is apparently like a hundred bucks? ew. I'd like to repaint the fenders/tank/side covers, which Matthew has offered to design, but past that I'm just hoping to keep it running for cheap and get my license.

He also threw in some saddlebags that look super cowboy and very cool.[Image: b29350dcaa67dce8fedd2cfe94e70521.jpg]

Well it's $500 so I can't really pass it up if it runs. So my question is what are the suggestions for what to do. Junkyard turbo? Rally cross car? Drift Mobile? Send them my way!

 Buy my Moped
Posted by: EclipseTurbno93 - 04-03-2017, 01:05 PM - Forum: For Sale/Trade, WTB - Replies (27)

Hey guys, I may be moving in the next set of months here and need to get this moped out of my ownership. Here's a link to the thread: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=11795

In a perfect world, I would love for this to go to someone who can bring it to the track and use it as a paddock cruiser, because it would be perfect for it. It would work for someone with a short commute as well though with a bit of work.

Here's the current deets:
2003 Kinetic TFR50
~2k miles

Good:
- It runs fantastically. Its a two stroke 49cc engine with a one speed trans, just twist and go, super easy to ride and always cuts on, even in the cold.
- I have recently disassembled the carb and cleaned it out as well as upjetted it. I have a set of various jets to go with it if you want to play with the A/F ratio some more.
- Minimal rust, frame is in good condition and shocks still work pretty well.
- Lots of tread on the tires still.
- High flow filter on the intake and new exhaust with expansion chamber for mo powah.
- New spark plug.
- Top speed on flat ground is around 25-30 mph. Downhill I clocked 40 once Confusedhock:
- Brand new belt.

Not so good:
- Biggest thing is it needs a new voltage regulator. That being dead has blown through most of the accessories (lights, horn, etc.) Haven't really had time to mess with it. You can pick one up pretty easily for $20-30 bucks if you wanted to fix it.
- Speedo worm gear fell out, so that doesn't work.
- The new exhaust could stand to be sanded and painted. came with cheap coating that burnt off and it has started to surface rust. Might just do this before selling since its like three bolts.
- Rear wheel is a bit bent. Not terribly noticeable but adds to the vibration a bit.
- No key, I have a secondary kill switch wired in at the moment.
- Front brake needs to be reattached. I've messed with it a bit but haven't had any success. When it worked it stopped quite well. Has drums on the front and rear.
- Likes to shake itself apart a bit, so a few bolts need to be tightened every once in a while if you're using it often and hitting bumps at full throttle like I do.

That's all I can think of right now, I'll update it if I think of anything else. I have title in hand and it is registered through the fall. Doesn't require a motorcycle license or insurance to ride. This thing is a lot of fun.

MM price is $100 so you have no excuse not to buy it! I don't have a way to transport it, so you're gonna have to pick it up :dunno: sorry.

Alright, have a friend some of you might know looking for a Miata. He apparently forgot his password and login. Says he prefers the old style which I assume means NA but isn't super picky it sounds like. Says he wants it to have a decent soft top on it. And would prefer the 1.8

And go.

 Wheel Bearing Castle Nut
Posted by: ViPER1313 - 04-01-2017, 11:23 PM - Forum: Technical Discussion - Replies (11)

Looking for some advice here. I have had persistent problems with the front wheel bearings on my Talon - the castle nuts do not want to stay torqued down. The last time I replaced them 10k miles ago, I ran into the same issue, and attributed it to tracking the car 1 day after installing new bearings without re-torquing after installation. When they got lose last time, I battled them repeatedly coming loose until I wailed on them with a breaker bar, far exceeding the factory torque spec. They stayed tight, but the right front bearing ate itself in very short order, from what I can only assume was the excessive pre-load on the races.

I just replaced my right front wheel bearing before coming down to the auto show. I had a garage press in a new bearing into the existing hub and reinstalled with the old lock washer and a new castle nut to factory torque spec (144-188 foot lbs, I set it to 175, checked with 2x torque wrenches). Drove 1 mile, retorqued (it was slightly loose). Drove another 20 miles, it was loose again (it was resting on the safety wire). Drove another 30 miles, it was loose again. I said F-this noise and torqued to 250lbs + another good heave to what I can only assume was 300+ ft lbs. Drove to the car show and back (roughly 150 miles) - after coming off the highway, the bearing was "popping" when moving at very slow speeds (it felt almost like a sticking brake pad.) It stopped popping after (what I can only assume) it cooled down from all the excessive load, nut was still tight. Got home, center of the hub was noticeably warm. I cranked down the nut with a breaker bar, loosened and re-torqued to 150ft-lbs; haven't driven it yet.

What the hell is wrong here? Bearing not pressed correctly into the hub? Hub warn out? Bad alignment eating the bearings? Needs new lock washer? Use loc-tite on the castle nut? I am at my wits end with this project.

 MMBEX: MM Beer Exchange?
Posted by: V1GiLaNtE - 03-31-2017, 01:50 PM - Forum: Lounge - Replies (28)

I figure enough of us here drink craft beer to some degree and probably have some beer stashed away for drinking later. It got me thinking today after I made a trade for a Hardywood Bourbon Barrel CRU that maybe we could start some sort of MM Beer Exchange?

I'm not sure if it would be best to manage within the thread or build a Google Drive document that we could all access with beers we have for trade or beers we're looking for? This could also be a source of gossip/heads up on where/when beers are getting released or available on tap. For example, next Tuesday there is a very high likelihood most brew shops in the area (NOVA) will start getting this years Founder Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS).

Thoughts? We could also use this place to list your Untappd handle.

Hey guys, I posted the ad on craigslist, I'm very honest about everything on the ad, let me know if you have any questions. If you've been in the club as a student in the last 5 years you've probably seen my car as its slowly gained more power, if you've been alum the entire time you may have seen it at the mm car shows. Looking to get something fun but more daily drivable as Im moving to NOVA.
