1989 Turbo II Mazda Rx7
#1
Now that I am graduating in 4 weeks and I have three weeks and a thesis due this week I figured it would be a good time to post my car. 11 months ago on a Wednesday when I was scheming on Craigslist I found a turbo II Rx7 for sale in Detroit with 103k miles on it. It had sat in the garage for 9 years and didn't run. I figured this would be a horrible investment so I drove 11 hours up with my brother picked it up and drove straight back towing it on a uhaul. After about 2 hours of popping my main 120 amp fuse and swapping wires around it fired up and lived. I did the basic rotary health maintenance items such as, deleted the OMP (oil metering pump), and premixed the hell out of the first couple tanks of gas. Once I got it fairly reliable, after cycling through 3 alternators, I started making it more livable. That included redoing all the brakes so it would actually stop, and cleaning the shit out of it. I don't even know where to start writing about this car. Literally everyday something is happening to it that needs to be fixed. That said when it runs it rips and is hella fun. Until it blows I'll flame on. Rx7s have been in the family for a while. My dad bought a 88 gxl 2+2 brand new and drove it till he was t-bones in 2006. My brother bought a 87 gtu in 2016 and we T2 swapped it.

Current Mods:
- Huge ass exhaust that shoots fireballs (HKS Apexi N1)
- HKS ebay blow off valve
- Rtek 1.5 chipped ecu
- Air pump delete
- BAC delete
- Custom intake pipe (Old one was hella cracked)
- Some head unit and subs
- ABS delete (Abs pump leaked a reservoir of fluid a day... Lots of rust)
- Maxspeeding rods 24 way adjustable coil overs( Absolute shit )
- ACT stage something clutch

Current Problems:
- No AC sucks ass in the summer
- Front coil overs making noise I think its the spherical bearings... Plus they ride horribly
- Intermittent check engine light I think it is from a bad ground on my knock sensor
- Hesitation around 3000-4000 RPM most likely from bad injector ground
- Little rust on the sunroof and back hatch
- Paint is aids
- Really need alignment
- Blown turbo seals means lots of smokey and PCV spray
- Bad input shaft bearing means whining in all gears except 4th

Car Goals:
- Get it painted and all sealed up so no more rust
- Solve suspension aids so it actually handles
- Front Mount Inter cooler so I can do more than one pull without heat soaking
- Larger injectors so no leaning and blowing up
- Boostttt

For anyone who hasn't seen this car, it is ridiculous and fantastic and and absolute blast to drive. Glad to see a post up for it since we end up working on it so often

It was fun being behind you on the cruise and watching fireballs come out the exhaust. Want to drive sometime.

When he says fireballs out the back, he means it. This thing is literally a flame thrower and sounds like a cannon going off. Super fun to drive too!

Well I went to change my o2 sensor and found it completely seized to the down pipe. So doing the responsible thing I stripped it out and tried to strip in a new one. No go but thankfully my brother had a spare downpipe lying around. Oh and I came out to my car last night and found the clutch pedal to the floor. Looks like a new slave is going in asap.

I guess i'll post an update because I just remembered my forum password.

Since April I have installed an adaptronic PNP s5 Ecu. Now I can actually monitor temps and adjust timing and fuel tables. I installed a AEM wideband so I can keep those AFRs super rich. I installed a corksport aluminum radiator which has proved more trouble than I think its worth. I also got my turbo rebuilt because my dumb self left the filter off and it ate a loose wire connector. Currently I have the car running hella rich just to avoid any real damage. I am slowly leaning the map out where it needs it. My biggest problem is overheating. I have been chasing small coolant leaks after I installed the new radiator however at 70mph + cruising on the highway temps like to climb up. Idling the car has no problem and anything under 60mph the cooling capacity is fine. That's what has me puzzled its not a rpm dependent property it is a speed thing. Maybe my ducting is all messed up or something else is going on. Anyhow the car still runs which is nice.
