I bought a thing.
It's been awhile, but I'm back. A few mods over the winter months but for now, just behold this beautiful Japanese sport touring beauty.
![[Image: 0yQHOPT.jpg]](https://i.imgur.com/0yQHOPT.jpg)
Alright so, deets.
Picked up this minty first gen FJ off a friend up in NOVA. He's owned it since new and is the previous owner we all wish we could find: All the records were in order, high quality mods and garage kept. It's got about 12k miles on the clock, pretty new tires and 5 months left on the extended factory warranty.
Current mods:
Givi panniers with top case and side cases.
FJ.com quickshifter with ECU flash
M4 exhaust
Throttle lock
Puig windscreen
Puig frame sliders
Puig swing arm spools
Over the winter, I'm going to add a skid plate and a rear shock I believe. It may be fashioned as a sport tourer but ground clearance is about the same as your average R6 so it can bottom out and rip out the oil drain plug. Yeah, not good. Other than than, I 'm just going to do some basic maintenance and start racking up the miles when we have one of these weird warm days and start using this as my main mount to work and back.

I don't know about y'all, but I have literally hundreds of dollars in expired speedperk bucks. I was sitting on about 10 $5 and $10 coupons and was thinking about how to use them before they expired. Usually in the store, you've got a bunch of items and the guy at the counter is absolutely not interested in helping you use your speedperks effectively. You're scrambling to find the email with the code and you aren't even sure which ones you've used. I even had a guy lie one time and try to convince me that my speedperks were automatically deducted when buying things.
Their website allows you to pick up at the store, and apparently you can use a $5 coupon for items that cost $5. This, combined with the perpetual 20% off coupon code on their website means if you're willing to spend the time doing a bunch of separate online orders, you can end up with essentially a bunch of free stuff, as long as you can find things that cost something in a $5 increment. Luckily, CRC Brakleen is almost exactly $5 with the discount.
I ordered so many of these that the store called me to double check it wasn't all a mistake, but they were actually pretty happy when I explained I did it to not waste their time in store.

I was told to post this in the chat, but I doubt it will be terribly exciting for anyone. Should be pretty cut and dry.
After I sold the Cadillac, I had some pocket change to roll into the next "sight unseen salvage auction" buy. Watched for a while, came across a relatively low mileage clean looking 2004 E500 with front end damage. Looked good, one owner, good inspection sticker, 102K miles. Worth a shot. I even had a donor car for the hood and bumper it needed lined up, so it was good to go.
![[Image: eX8dPq2.jpg]](https://i.imgur.com/eX8dPq2.jpg)
Got into one hell of a bidding war with some jerk from SC who didn't want to give it up and won it at $1750, which comes out to $2173 after fees. Add in half a day and half a tank of diesel to go pick it up and I was way over the $1500 I wanted to be in it for, but I was itching for a project and patience has never been my strong point.
Picked it up from the auction no problem, this was my first time towing with the 6.0 and other than the trailer brake connection deciding to give out after the car was loaded it did mint. The towing mode that uses the variable vane turbo to increase back pressure and enhance engine braking and the torque converter strategy rendered trailer brakes completely unnecessary for a 6k pound load. Car is super, super clean other than the obvious deer hit. Not a scratch on it, interior looks brand new, runs like a top. Even has a sticker in the windshield from Mercedes for the next oil change, so very likely dealer maintained. Exhaust nuts could be taken off with a crescent wrench, so probably a garage kept car. Runs and drives perfectly. Had a moment of fear for the air ride when it was first loaded on the trailer and it looked like Chase's Mini, but the compressor kicked right in and put it back where it's supposed to be.

Back in the shop, the bumper and hood are obviously toast, as is the entire radiator / condenser / fan assembly. Luckily that all comes out as one unit and should be cake to replace.

The problem at this point is that the donor car I had lined up is not the same shade of grey, and I can't find used color matched panels anywhere closer than California. Shipping them in would cost more than I have in the car - a far cry from the $200 I was expecting to pay for panels. At this point my best option is looking like a cheap paint job from one of the body shops I do business with. Best quote so far is $400 to paint the hood and bumper, no fender blending. Not sure how that's going to play out, but we'll see.
I'm estimating that the car with a salvage title is worth $3500-$4000 to the right person. I'm in it for ~$2200. I'm figuring another $300 for the panels and aluminum up front, another $400 for paint, $125 for the rebuild certification, and then registration. It's gonna be tight, I lost any chance on making a buck on this one the second I refused to let it go during the auction. Fingers crossed I can get out of it breaking even though, and as someone who usually just breaks things it will be fun to try going the other way around.
Headed to the junkyard tomorrow for parts, I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Anyone happen to have a used one that works laying around. Know it's a long shot but trying to sell my truck and it needs a battery. The way I have it wired up, I kind of need it to be the dual terminal format.

Well, I'm not really sure what I'm doing, but I suppose this car is going to be around for a bit.
Was working from home a few weeks ago at my girlfriend's house and got an email alert from Craigslist that met my criteria. It was a 1990 Miata in red with a lot of high quality photos and low mileage. The price was... well... very good, so I shot them an email and began making my case to the girlfriend that I needed to drive to the eastern shore that evening to spend 80% of my savings account on a third car. The next 20 minutes were fairly tense as I waited for the return email, fully expected it to be a scam or already be sold. Eventually, the phone rang and an older woman's voice on the other end said "Hello, I received your email about the Mazda. I'll be here all evening if you want to come take a look". That was all I needed to hear and I was ready to head out and grab the trailer, but there were a few more details I would learn on the phone before the conversation ended. First, the car was being sold as it was her husband's and he had passed away suddenly the week before, which was very sad, but re-assured me this wasn't a scam. The second fact was, the car was located on the eastern shore and it was about to be rush house, so it would take me at least 3 hours in rush hour to get there. I pleaded with her to not let the car go before 7 PM; she was a little confused about the question, but she agreed. Luckily, I was the first person she spoke to. I told the team at work I was leaving early and we set off.
My girlfriend tagged along and we brought the doggo. Why? I don't know.
We arrived right around 7 with the trailer as the owner and her daughter were finishing dinner. It was raining, dark, and cold. The garage door opened and I knew immediately I was purchasing it. The red paint shown brightly even in the dark garage and the car started quickly and silently as soon as I turned the key. As a formality, I checked the rockers for rust and drove it approximately 100 yards down the road and turned around. There was no point in dragging out the process, this car could have sold for twice what they were asking without issue. I returned to their house and said I'd take it.
"So, we realize we need to give you a death certificate in order to title the car. Do you have $25? Each copy costs that much and we only have a few"
I did not.
"Ooooh. That may be an issue. Do you have a check?"
At this point, I thought I was being pranked. Were they really about to not sell me the car over $25 that was never mentioned? I ran back to the truck and asked my girlfriend for any cash she said. I walked back over to the daughter, who was overseeing the deal, with $6 in cash. The daughter's face contorted as if she was really considering this to be a major roadblock, then she asked me to come inside. I sat down at the table with the mom (the owner) and eventually hashed out a plan where I would take the car and the title, along with the death certificate, get it titled, then mail a check for $25 back or mail back the death certificate. This whole situation struck me as extremely odd, but I realized they were in a turbulent time in their lives as well, so I wasn't going to make a big deal of it. We chatted for a minute, then I loaded the car up and brought it back home.
I'll glaze over the next couple weeks in this story, but it involved probably 7 hours at the DMV total and a lot of trips to the post office to get things mailed back and forth. Eventually the car was titled and a check for $10 and some keys I found in the car were mailed back to her.
The car:
1990 Miata in Classic Red
95,000 miles
Garage kept for the last decade.
Newer Soft top, top tonnea, full cockpit tonneau
Bags of spare bulbs
Touch up paint
AC Deleted for some reason
Mazda OEM Cup Holder with the Box
Tons of little goodies only a retired man living in St. Michaels would have like leather map pockets
The car was a base model with manual windows and wasn't wired for the seat speakers from the factory, but at some point, it seems someone had tan leather seats installed with some after market wiring to make the seat speakers work with the new head unit. I didn't like the look of those seats so I drove back over to Maryland to pick up some black cloth seats and swapped them in.
Changed the oil, gave the car a good inspection, and changed the trans and diff oil. Realized the soft top was installed extremely incorrectly, so I fixed that as well. The tires were over 15 years old, so I threw a new set of all seasons on as well.
This past week, I realized I was probably keeping the car until the spring, so I started the search for a hardtop, and within 2 days saw one pop up in Centerville for a stupid good price. I also happened to be off work that day, so I was at their house with cash within 45 minutes of it being posted. The moral of this story, being available to be anywhere with cash immediately is how you get good deals.
Plan for the car going forward, hopefully nothing. Drive it and enjoy it. It could use some shocks... and that's about it.
