Ideas for Fall 11' Spring 12'
#1
Hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer whether it's in an office or on the beach. Regardless of where you are hopefully you've at least had a couple summer night cruises worth of driving. This thread is open for any ideas for the upcoming school year. This years officers plan to go over the content of this thread so if you have any ideas, words of wisdom, or learnings from the past let us know.

I think we've long since had the "competition" side down pat - keep on doing that. Get out to auto-x's, track events, karting, etc. Do a Summit Point karting day (sorely needed). Do another one of those college autocross-a-thons. But yeah, I think the "camaraderie" aspect is where work struggles to get done. So...

Somehow, someway, organize a trip to the Tail of the Dragon. At a time when it won't suck to be there due to weather or traffic, which shouldn't be too hard. I was just reading about a guy who drove all the way from Texas to drive it, which reminded me that its something I always wanted MM to do, and us being (relatively) close, we don't have an excuse not to.

We stopped doing Skyline Drive cruises for some reason which I miss as well.

Do some tours of FOW/race shops like back in the day.

Organize some sort of annual trek/gathering (including TOTD or SD?) to a cool place for food and beverages, or a party, or something worthwhile. "MM Fest 2k11" or something like that.

Competition - I'd like to see students actively participating. Maybe i need to drive down more to see it, maybe its happening. Its an expensive hobby. Even autox adds up. If MM could host, work to get free autox runs, etc... we need to look into it and make it happen. When my CRX is done I'll happily let anyone co-drive it... its an old honda, it was made to be broken.

The Tail - Its an expensive trip. I'd like to go and drag the bikes down... its my thing. It may have to be heavily subsidized for people to attend (alumni excluded... we just burn cash and take days off right?)

Anual Trek - its best to make that a summer activity or a winter break activity Wink who wants to hit up florida? lol

the local trails are pretty stocker friendly. Goodspeeds SHOWheep can even run flag pole (i'm pretty sure i made that trip in my scirocco of all things)... there are obvious spots we can do some more fun things with the right equipment around.

pack it in, pack it out... its "local" so we can increase some participation and non campers can go "home."

I work with a guy, who's son in law (basically, he's dating the guys daughter) is Mark from the Ariel Atom factory at VIR. I know we can get in to get a tour. Rex and I officially have the alumni club house. We are hoping to get something together for this fall. At the last MM meeting this year (yes I attended) we talked about the Skyline Drive cruises, and the club wants to bring them back, its a good way to do cruises and it keeps the jackassary to a minimum.

What is this tail of the dragon you speak of, I googled it but it looks like a road for motorcycles or something and I thought we were talking about offroading...maybe I spaced out for a minute but I'm super confused right now...

Goodspeed, what does "TOTD" and "SD" stand for..sorry I'm a noob :dunno:
There is a trail off of 33 right before you get to the WV line, don't know where it goes because I got to a second water crossing that wasn't as friendly as the first but it would be super stock 4x4 friendly...I was in the M btw, not my truck and I had to strattle some ruts but made it alright.(I felt that jermey clarkson would have done it)

Ariel atom tour does sound fun especially after seeing the v8 version

OFF TOPIC: Along the lines of trail riding.. I'm probably going to be in the burg' next weekend with the "plans" of driving flag pole and maybe do some camping.. if you're interested lets start a thread..

Matt:

It's expensive in that it's in TN like 8-9hrs away( guess?).. So $$ for gas, lodging, food, speeding tickets...

I didn't get one.... TOTD is pretty far away from VA but well worth the drive. Unless you want a ticket though I would not go balls deep - pretty dangerous road to speed down. I enjoyed it, Stephanie's stomach did not. IMO, its one hell of a road, but I don't know if its 20+ hours driving time better than 33W.

i've always hoped for a TOTD trip, but that's basically because i've lived "close" these past years so its easy for me to talk it up. i'd tend to believe that if you look hard enough there are comparable drives in SW Virginia and eastern West Virginia. I've tooled around out there and you can carve it up all day if you map it right with 500% less exposure to police and lane-crossing dumbasses. seems like unless you're content with 33W you have to be willing to do some driving though.

Ferrari of Washington was a great trip. same with PTG (or whatever that place was that housed the McLaren F1 and all those BMW racecars).

Keep doing karting. thats the best, cheapest, competitive motorsport you have access to.

i wonder if anyone would be game for doing pit crew duties for roadcourse guys or even stage rallies. i think we had someone here that was doing rallying with a celica and offered spots for people to crew but nobody bit.

Oh that falls under the two thoughts one post thing again, I guess skimming through the posts, I was thinking TODT was the thing that was close...I guess its the trails that are close...is flagpole the one on 33w that starts as pavement for about 50 yards and turns to gravel and goes down by a lake?

Tail of the Dragon is in the lower southwest corner of North Carolina. you're looking at an easy 8-10 hour drive just to get there, not counting the time you'll actually want to spend driving on it.

Oh but as far as ideas for the upcoming semesters, I'm a strong supporter of karting because I don't like breaking my car (its a stock M with 158,000 so yes it breaks even in autocrosses at this point until I straigten it out) so I want to get some MM karts teams at the twilight kart enduros and what not...its almost the same price as an autocross, doesn't tear up your daily, and arguably more fun because your not worried about you car and the track and racing experience is like real racing which would otherwise require years of experience and lots of money to get your car on track

Win on karting, plus I like the idea of getting people out to crew for racers. I loved the time I went and crewed for a 24 hour race. I know tons of racers that would appreciate an extra hand even for people with no experience. NASA nationals, SCCA Nationals are perfect chances for those, as the racers will typically teach you a few things, take you there, have your entry fee paid for (its actually an entry fee for Nationals). My friend Mike D'Amico already knows a bit about M3s and is learning a ton about car setup and racing simply by me getting him up to speed. Should make his experience a lot easier getting into the sport.

I dont know how to get people on track more, just let me know and ill try my best. I tried to provide seats, water, canopy shade, rides when I can. Any ideas? (I think last year was very successful, lets expand on it).
