Does he?
He said "PC Games". Maybe he wants to play minesweeper. *I* said racing sim.
Considering he keeps bring up rFactor and such, yea, racing sims. I give chan some credit, as I think he knows what he can and can't run via an emulator such as mindsweeper.

oh no hey, as long as it runs minesweeper, I'm super happy! I think a 2G core 2 duo could probably run it pretty good
Kidding... yes I'm talking about racing games mostly. I hadn't seen that list of compatable games, that's good stuff. I've also seen a few people on LFS forums running it regularly on an iMac and they say it runs great. I ASSUME I'll be using bootcamp, but I'll certianly try emulation as well just to see how it goes.
I know it seems stupid, but I might be running this mac most of the time as a PC. I could give $800 to Dell (I can barely build one myself for that much) instead of $1100 to Apple and get something similar, but it'd never be in one cool 15 lb package, I don't really need the upgradeability of the PC case, and I trust Apple's hardware more than I trust Dell. I'm just trying to figure out if it'll be as stable and compatable as a "real" PC would be. There's nothing so far that I've read that indicates it won't act just like a "real" one.
Guess I'll order it up and share MY thoughts! 8)

Uhh - for lack of time to read these threads - why wouldnt you just dual boot? Is that what bootcamp does?

*sigh*
I use VMWare every day. Monday through Friday. It isn't that bad. Could you play BF2142 on it? No. Could you play WoW? Maybe. Have YOU used VMWare lately? Look, I'm not saying VMWare is an answer to Channing's problem, but it's a million times better than *emulating* a WinXP environment. I've yet to see a windows emulator for any platform that's worth a shit.
What you could do with VMWare, however, is go straight from doing whatever you mac freaks do on your Mac that you can't do on a PC (which, judging by the commercials, is be a snarky douchebag) and boot up a windows environment in seconds. No rebooting. Done playing game? Close VMWare. DONE! No need to worry about spyware or viruses or anything, when you're done playing you can revert to a known good virus free image. (If you want.) I mean, let's face it: If you want to run the latest and greatest PC games, there is no alternative to buying a PC. None. Buying a Mac and dual booting will work...but why? But in spite of this Channing asked a question, I gave an answer, and I don't understand the problem. Jesus VMWare for Mac isn't even out yet, and you guys are like "Won't work! SUCKS! REX IS TEH STUPID!"

Yea, b/c running Firefox and a DirectX 10 game is the same thing, gezz.
I just don't understand why my opinion, given when solicited, is automatically invalid because you and mike disagree with me.

that's exactly what I'm paying the extra $300 for.
Don't worry Rex, I still like you. And I'll try both bootcamp and VMware. I appriciate you telling me about it.
Ordered it. 8) And ANOTHER free (with rebates) printer. Hooray.

It's not that. If you can stand dual booting, by all means do so. It will give you the best performance, and I never said otherwise. Everybody (including myself) is just "swinging their proverbial IT dicks around" (to quote a concerned party). I was just pissed because Mike, Chad, and Myself (along with a bunch of other people) work in the IT field, and we're all qualified, knowledgeable individuals, and I was of the (possibly mistaken) understanding that opinions and alternatives were equally valid. But, I wouldn't run VMWare with something like R2 until they can figure out how to use the physical graphics card instead of virtualizing it. But they've come along way, and there are alot of games I wouldn't think twice about playing on a VM, and there are alot of benefits to using said virtual platform, especially when VMWare is in the habit of giving away their products.
But don't listen to me, Mike used VMWare once and tried to play solitaire and it SUCKED.

*sigh* lost another one to the marketing....
<- currently building a core2duo / nvidia 7900 system for ~$600
bah to marketing! I just trust Apple hardware (and software). It's never let me down since our first IIe (which probably still works just fine if I dug it out of the closet). And I've worked on thousands of Macs in previous jobs, prepped 1000's more for schools with only 1 or 2 DOA components. While trying to do the same with batches of HP and Dell machines, I felt like I was the QC, rejecting piles of parts and whole machines. :? If I can afford the extra few hundred bucks for a well thought out package, cool design, quiet and reliable components, good customer support, and the flexibility to run just about any OS I want? I'll take it.
A 7300 even got me through VaTech when the engineering program required PCs. I had a SWEET 100mhz PC card in that damn thing, running all my e-school software.

Chan - did you pick up the macbook or macbookPRO?
*sigh* I've been eyeing the financing on macbooks as now all my IT classes I have to do crap in Visio/Access/etc - would love the dual OS setup.
I gave up on waiting for the MacBook to get the core 2 duo, and didn't really want to pay the price premium for the Pro. So I got the 2Ghz iMac.

I'd say buy the iMac for everything you use a computer for and use that 800 dollars to build a gaming PC, I've had several friends do it for roughly that amount of money. www.newegg.com is a start, but I guarantee it if you buy the iMac and use the OSX operating system you'll love it.

i use it nearly every day and do something far closer to gaming than you. it WILL NOT run any game made after the year 2000 at even close to a playable level. k? it is a fact, live with it. if you still don't buy it, try it and let me know how it goes.

Son, we use something here that is about 2 generations ahead of VMWare, we use it on top of SELinux to run windows, soliars, another instance of linux and a custom OS, all at the same time, also they can be run at different classification levels (just so you understand how subdivided the VMs are). It just isn't possible to directly access the hardware in a VM like you can natively. Everything in a VM has to pass through several levels before it can get at the hardware, and those levels MUST understand the command to interpert it correctly, do you see a new version of VMware coming out when a new copy of DirecX does or NVidia driver does? No, so it will NEVER even get close to the level of performance modern games need. VM's have their place, 3D games is not one of them.

Jesus Christ you guys. Don't you think I understand that? Have you not read a single post I've written? I already conceded it won't run brand new games. And I already said that it won't run anything that needs a standalone graphics card (like many new games do.) But you cannot deny that a VM will "play PC games on a Mac" because it will, and depending on WHAT GODDAMN GAME you want to play, it will be fine. Now, since Channing has said he wants to play new 3D racing games, I've already said that a dual boot would be the best option for him.
Now, can we drop it. Fuck me sideways with a lunchbox.
