a) someone down there has a car
b) because you don't have a car we should not be invited to events down there?

i see no problem with having a campus evenets section as well as a normal events section, it helps to organize events, but i do disagree with alumni not being allowed to post. i like the different sections because lets face it, alot of events can be going on at once and some confusion often arises. I also feel this site needs tons more moderation, compared to other forums i am a meer of we honestly get away with to much...
I don't feel MM is divided. We are merely trying new things. We are giving the harrisonburg section a try, as many students have requested it, and if it works it works, if it doesn't we'll nix it. It's nothing for anyone to get their panties in a wad or anything. If it proves a failure, we'll nix it and call it a learning experience.
I also don't think our actual attendance at the track has gone down. The number of people that go relative to our member base has gone down, but the number of people attending has been fairly steady.
Another thing I haven't been fully able to grasp is why everyone is upset that 110% of our membership isn't going to every track event. Simply because everyone does not come out does not mean MM is turning into a ricer car club like those other evil schools. We simply have a more diverse member base. As long as the members are passionate about cars and understand that MM's focus is on motorsports, they are more than welcome to be members whether they spend their weekends at the track or not.

Who said you weren't invited to local events? Show me one post in the Current Students forum that says "No Alumni allowed". If you want to drive all the way here for a scenic drive then by all means please do.
but i can't post to say "hey guys, i might be 10 minutes late, can you wait for me?" as such, it isn't very inviting.

Its different because we didnt create a separate forum where only nova kids or alumni can post. Thats the whole point, do you get it yet?
You say it doesnt create a division, except by definition the creation of the forum is a division.
Goodspeed Wrote:Well, if it means anything, nobody got together and said "Hey, lets block out the Alumni, yeah that'll be fun". We merely wanted our own space to discuss things that current students could easily access and read.
Just because it was not the intent, does not mean it can't have an undesired effect and perception of dividing the current students from the group of alumni - especially when only current students are allowed to post in there, how else are the alum supposed to view it?

you know pete lives and works in harrisonburg, but as far as i know, hes not allowed to post in that section. i'm not hurt that i cant post in it, but to me it sends a clear signal that non-students arent welcome to comment on anything in that forum. i just have no idea how it was originally conceived as a solution to bring students and non-students together by keeping them apart.

this past weekend we had 12 registered according to the thread about summit, but had 17 because alison, jess c, rex, julie and navin were there. 0 were students.
VIR-N last month had 15 registered on that thread and DJ was the only student i saw there.
yes, we still have that core of people that go to the track, so the numbers are there, but the current students are not showing up which is what this whole issue is dealing with. just my observation.

bassmangrammy Wrote:Seriously, Mike and RJ... what do you want? Do you want us to keep doing things the same way and ignore growth, ignore student requests, and ignore change?
Dont put words in my mouth - I never said that. I never made any sort of attacks at the direction of the club.
The only participation I have had in this thread was to point out the possibility that there is a perception that the club was being dividied due to the alum not having access to post in the campus events forum.
I was talking with G last week about the campus forum, and I thought it was a good idea and that it would probably pick up as the school year got underway.
Quote:Beyond this discussion, I'm removing myself from any argument over this issue.
What argument?
You are an officer. You can drive the direction and the change of the club. While the alum still have the ability to have a voice, it is ultimately up to the current crew of officers to get things done, get new members in, and keep things growing successfully just as it has for several years.
Throwing your hands in the air and walking away in a temper tantrum doesnt drive any sort of progress here. Take a minute, read through the thread and listen to what everyone (both current and past students), and then sit down with the current officers and talk about where you want to go. Make a plan, set goals, and go ahead with it. You guys are certainly capable of getting the job done.

Fair enough. Positive change is good.

so Aaron now that you are here, answer my question that I posted on page 2
Evan Wrote:It is the current student's club. It is pretty clear that the current students arent as interested in motorsports as the original members.
Now, since the founders started the club as a motorsports club, to what extent do the current students have a responsibility to uphold that, and to what extent do they have the right to change it ? (which so far is more of a generic car guy club)
Whatever happened to the idea of the 5 year reunion? Regardless, I think we need some sort of event so that alums and current students can meet and greet. Homecoming weekend is Oct 21st, might be a good weekend.
But we need something so that we can all get together and meet each other. Hell, we can do this in Harrisonburg so that the current students have no excuse. But as long as there are "campus events" that only the students are attending, and track events that everyone else attends, the bridge isn't going to be gapped. The interaction needs to start somewhere, and this is just an idea to get the ball rolling.

Good question. I've been pushing for motorsports. I got people to go to Hyperfest and that was a start. I plan to keep that up.

Saying "oh I don't care anymore i'll just bring friends to fill up the party" doesn't inspire the need to support your MM wishes. I really hope some of us come to the Chili event and others Other than the one against whoever in their ultimate wisdom decided to create a forum that blocks a specific group of members from posting in it I hold no grudges. My comment about filling this party with friends outside of MM was meant to say that just because the students show no interest doesn't mean the party will suffer, there will still be plenty of people there for the fun. I have the same opinion about the current students that I do about any of my friends outside of MM, I'll tell you about something, but I'm sure as hell not going to poke and prod you to try and get you to come to it, if you want to come you come, if you don't want to don't there's plenty of others who will jump at the chance.
I support the idea of a campus events forum, it allows for quick and easy viewing of what's going on at JMU, but I don't support the exclusion of any members. By doing so you're just adding to the already building gap between current students and alumni.
The events we plan in NoVA never have been something that current students can't come to. Just as you pointed out about your scenic drive where a lot of alumni didn't make it, there are things that come up and circumstances that prevent some members from participating in planned events. I can't think of any event that has ever been planned in the history of MM where specifiic members weren't able to come. By preventing non students from posting in that forum you are in fact telling us that we aren't welcome at those events.
bassmangrammy Wrote:Good question. I've been pushing for motorsports
Ok, the turnout has been light so far this year. What do you plan to do to increase participation at the track/autox/motorsport events?
Some ideas:
Karting Enduros (yes, more than one - MM enduro series?)
PTG and/or Ferrari of Washington tours
Redline Motors shop visit (Grand-Am cup team in purcellville)
NASA event in October at Summit to work, hang out, get ride-alongs
Grand-Am Cup at VIR in October
WERA/CCS races at Summit

We (CCVT) are ready and willing to have a karting event with you guys. Last time we rented the track at g-force our spots filled up very quick.
I always try to get the new people to post about their experiences when they go to the track to encourage other new people to go as well. We seem to be having good luck with it, but there does seem to be a core group that usually goes (myself, ryan, matt, dom, nate, and rob). Its of course also mentioned at all the meetings, which I'm sure you guys do to. We all carpool, so transportation is never a problem. Other then that, I don't know what else you can do to encourage people to get out to the track.
