I think people are forgetting here that the Sky weighs 2933 lbs (Solstice is 2860). It's pretty porky to me for the size and equipment levels, especially if you notice the MX-5 weighs in at 2500 lbs. Add that turbo engine, beefed-up suspension, bigger brakes, etc of the Redline... and you get an even heavier car. The 5.5 0-60 claim seems reasonable though. Unfortunately, it's only 5-speed (both models), which will limit it's acceleration times a bit when compared to a properly tuned six speed. I've gotten a chance to see and sit in a Solstice and a Sky, and immediately I noticed the seat cushion is equivalent to that of a bean bag...waaay too soft for me, and probably for many other people, yet nobody seems to mention that in the magazines. Anyone seen the trunk on one of these also? It's damn small, much smaller than that of the new MX-5. Clutch seems short and tight, steering wheel diameter is ideal, visibility seems manageable, and the shifter has a nice, short through, although the movement seems as if the shifter is moving through a sea of rubber padding. Lastly, one man mentioned how his LS2 equipped Solstice got 11 mpg! The cars sounds pretty pissed though, I'll post some vids on this soon.

On a side note...I got 29.8 mpg with the Crossfire on the highway on a roadtrip!!! Ha, and Chrysler claims 25 mpg on the highway with my car. Thank-you cruise control at 72 mph! Of course some short bursts of acceleration was included as well for kicks

Having driven both the new MX-5 and the old and older Miatas, I like the old ones better. The new MX5 has a sweet engine and if you mod the suspension, I'm sure it'll kick ass too, but stock vs. stock, old miatas are better.

Edited so it makes sense

I really like everything about the new miata except the styling. Its horrendous. I fit in the car much better, the new engine is fantastic, and from poking around the underside and engine bay, a lot of engineering went into the car

But for a daily driver, I think Id rather have a solstice.

When compared to the old miata on the track, the new Miata seems to be more unstable. Watching both cars on the track and listening to race car drivers talk about both cars reveals that the new Miata's rear end comes out too easy when compared to the older vehicle. But, the new Miata is also alot faster as well.

For me, Solstice>Ion

Especially the planned Club Racer version....maybe ditch the wing...drop it a bit with some wheels....I can't get over how much I love the roof

uh, and who are you talking to?
Every Pro-SM MX5 cup driver that has talked about the new car has raved.
They are putting down ITS lap record times already with almost no development into the car. The little bugger is FAST

Who said that?

The only thing that would make it too loose is 20psi missing from the rear tires.

The Sky looks way better than the Solstice. The Solstice looks like something a grandmother would drive.

Yeah man, I just can't get into that front end. I'd hit it from behind but everytime I had to see the face I'd be dissapointed. The Sky on the other hand looks kinda mean and aggressive.

I've seen some pictures of 'done-up' Solstices (GXP?) that looked a little better to me. I think I saw hardtop club racer version that looked better too.

Still, a great offering from GM.

I would have to agree with Evan and RJ, only because I drove it myself on a small "autocross" course with the Mazdaspeed event. IT is tight, it feels good, and the balance is almost perfect. I absolutely loved the car in terms of handling. If I was looking for something to stay stock and race this car would probably be it. But I do enjoy much more power, and once you do that with a miata it really messes everything up as they lose traction too easily with turbo. We will see how the sky redline does, I am waiting till those come out and test-drive one. If it is all that I want it to be (hopefully) I will get one in about 5-6 years when used prices fall down and use it as a weekend/track bitch.

The sky is much more beautiful than the solstice. The miata is nice, but they have to make a mazdaspeed very soon to compete with the redline sky as it is almost a sin now to have a car less than 200 crank horsepower.

you guys are crazy. The smooth flowing curves and clean appearance of the solstice are a work of art.

that angular sky with all the vent garbage is going to look dated in about 8 months

The Sky/Solstice is based off of this GM Europe product:

The Vauxhall 220R. This is what should have come to the US.

Vauxhall VX220 is mid engine, and based off of the Elise

the next revision will in fact be based off the sky/solstice platform however. 50% weight increase. Thats a hell of a "2nd generation"....

VX220 is teh sex, but it isn't a Kappa platform.

We never got it because the Elise/VX220 can't pass US crash standards, but Lotus can get away with that (basically) because they're small. GM can't.
