And I'm glad my links/proof/etc of why this administration has felt like an attack on me and my friends for the last four years has been helpful. It bums me out that I had to provide it in the first place. We're all busy, but one idea that's been reinforced lately for me is that if you're going to call yourself an "ally" to people who aren't like you, you need to do more than just say that. You need to follow the news that affects them, perhaps not at a microscopic level but at a macro level, so that you understand the struggles (and successes) of others.

There are a LOT of people who I have as friends and/or acquaintances, who I think have good intent, but literally only think about stocks/personal finance and the second amendment. But they claim to care about the gays. I'm sure they claim to care about women and non-white races. And they still feel okay voting in a way that keeps the GOP empowered, because even though they know OF people who are different, they don't really take enough time to understand the struggles.

I sincerely hope the people in here who are claiming "I'm not voting for Trump" are going to actually vote for Biden, however much they like him or not. Third-party right now seems like a big idealistic slap in the face to people who are a part of non-white, non-male, non-straight, non-Christian communities, either by choice or by birth.

Well so don't take this the wrong way, but "Removing LGBT language from the State Department Website" is easy to get lost in the noise. I *have* been following things like, say, permitting transgender folks in the armed forces, but I have a close transgender friend who served pre-transition and she seems to think that doing a transition while active duty is literal insanity. Since she's bt,dt, I trust her opinion on the matter. Just as an example, not as a comprehensive point. "Gay couples who use a surrogate that isn't american citizen and the child is born overseas" is another example where I see why it's problematic, but I also see why you'd want to have clear rules about that sort of thing.

As to your last point, "Am I going to vote for the guy who wants to put me, personally, in jail?" The answer is no. 100% absolutely not. And this isn't some kind of hyperbole or sarcasm, either. It's right in his platform.

So...no thanks. Maybe after 4 more years of Trump the democrats will leave me alone and I can consider voting for them.

I'm looking here and don't see anything that would indicate a law-abiding Rexy needs to go to jail:

https://joebiden.com/gunsafety/

Perhaps I'm missing something obvious, it's a lot of text.

This is not a dig at any one person but I truly find gun ownership/2A to be a really strange hill to die on given um... everything else going on. None of what's listed on that link I pasted from Biden's site sounds inflammatory or bad to me. I guess the same argument could be used against me or anyone else who feels (or has factually been) marginalized.

We all have our priorities and I find "2A as my top talking point and priority" to be very odd. But okay.

Joke’s gonna be on Rex if Trump ends up supreme leader come Nov 2020. What makes you think our new one party system won’t go and confiscate all your fun 2A toys? What checks are there to his power at that point? Winning elections is profitable. Not having elections is more profitable.

I believe Rex's most important factor is he believes Democrats are a direct assault on America's liberty, especially as it pertains to 2A.

I think we can debate the validity of that as a primary concern, but I don't think he's purposefully looking for an argument. Back when I accused him of hyperbole and sarcasm, I think that was the case, but I don't anymore.

My biggest concern is progress as a nation, as I perceive it, which means the protection of health, infrastructure, and liberty for everyone. Sometimes I have to do things like vote against my self-interest or support someone who has a belief antithetical to mine because I agree with them more than I don't.

Because a lot of times by the time you go to court … it takes so long to go to court to get the due process procedures. I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida; he had a lot of fires [and] they saw everything. To go to court would have taken a long time, so you could do exactly what you’re saying but take the guns first, go through due process second."

Do you think I haven't been writing my senators, representatives, making donations to lobby groups, and generally making a ruckus about this very quote?

Again, not going to vote for Trump, didn't in '16 and have no plans now.

But to ask me to vote for someone who not only agrees with the above statement but wants to expand even further? Why would I do that?

Jake,

The relevant section:
  • importation of assault weapons.
  • Regulate possession of existing assault weapons under the National Firearms Act. Currently, the National Firearms Act requires individuals possessing machine-guns, silencers, and short-barreled rifles to undergo a background check and register those weapons with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Due to these requirements, such weapons are rarely used in crimes. As president, Biden will pursue legislation to regulate possession of existing assault weapons under the National Firearms Act.

Penalty for an NFA violation is a felony. If I simply do as I  do every day right now I'll be a felon.

Now before you say "well just comply with the law" think very carefully about "just comply" with a law that touches one of the bill of rights.

Because you believe the greater good of all the other positions outweigh the harm levied by this one position.

It's clear you do not, but I hope you can also see how others might interpret it as indexing on your preferred freedoms versus equity for all.

what are the odds you think anything close to this would actually make its way through congress?

honest question. anything like that will either die upfront or would never be anything remotely close to this in practical terms as an actual law. this is Biden simply saying words to rally a base, same as Trump promising to build his Magic Brown Rapists Wall from sea to shining sea.

Well if a SCOTUS Justice who is pro gun gets appointed then I'll honestly stop caring and go away.

But what you're literally telling me is "Don't worry about what he says, vote anyway."

Isn't...that what you guys are saying Trump supporters do?

I mean again, we're talking about (like it or not) a civil right.

What's more, nobody in america is going to vote for joe biden based on gun control, who would have voted for Trump otherwise? Y'all think this is a weird hill to die on? ME TOO. But I'm not the one saying that people ought to be thrown in a cage for a metal box with a spring in it.

I can only vote on the information I have and all the information I have says "If we the Democrats can pull it off we don't give a fuck what the Constitution says we will do it."

I won't vote for that. Period.

I also support the 2A Rex. But you protest voting against Biden wanting you to submit to a background check to own guns “otherwise (hypothetically.. if a lot of stuff happens that probably won’t) you are a felon” is essentially a vote for Trump.... who has actively advocated locking people up for 10 years for.... wait for it... tearing down confederate monuments.

https://www.businessinsider.com/law-trum...son-2020-6

Or 60 years for protesting his inauguration

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...protesters

But go ahead and write in Donald Duck in protest. I hope we are all allowed that same opportunity again in 2024.

I’d say the GOP current shitting on the constitution mightily outweighs dems trying to reduce gun violence.

My hot take: infatuation with guns is fuckin’ stupid and the only reason it’s even in the constitution is because a shoddy militia in the 1770s could take down a global super power. Good luck today with that. Some people’s hardline stance on one thing has crippled the US because they’re unwilling to give up an extremely uninteresting aspect of their personality. Get a hobby that isn’t related to potentially killing people.

If any of these were applied to speech or the right to vote (my god, a background check to vote? *clutches pearls*) you guys would be baying in outrage.

If you're for throwing people in jail for owning an 11 round magazine, you do not "Support the 2A" in any meaningful sense, which is doubly ironic considering the amount of paranoid speculation about Trump trying to appoint himself president for life or whatever.

See, There *IS* an candidate for president that is keep your guns, protect innocent people from getting killed by out of control law enforcement, keep taxes low and government accountable and Jake thinks it's a "slap in the face" to vote for her.

"Bbbbut Rex, muh Duopoly... I have to vote for a shithead or the other shithead will winnnnnn..." This is actually the problem. You are the problem you're complaining about.

Quite a few people have gone to jail for this, both while the 94awb was active and in some states. I know you think you're being clever but being dismissive because an enumerated right in the Constitution is important to me isn't a great look imho.

I'm also big on speech and privacy, but both candidates suck equally on that and for like the 10th time I'm not voting for either of them.
