Looking at picking this up for iRacing, 1080p, single screen. Thoughts?

Would be paying about $100 less than shown for new, but open box. Based on what I read over there, it could run triples but I would likely have to sacrifice some settings. (My current laptop barely manages 35fps with everything on minimum, and I quit playing because of it)

I have a little bit of a rub near lock but if you are turned to lock on a track there are other problems already...

I’m not a computer genius but you could almost run VR on that at a lower frame rate.

Shoudln't have a problem at all. My PC has an older i5 and gtx 960 and runs iRacing at pretty much max settings locked at the standard 84 fps with no sweat. The 1060 shouldn't be stressed at all.

Only thing about running triples if you eventually want to do that is make sure it has enough outputs, my 960 has a dvi, hdmi, and mini display port out, but I thought I read somewhere you can't actually use all 3 of them together to do triple screens.

I've actually been thinking about trying to either pick up a good wheel (mines a Driving Force GT that came with Gran Turismo 5), or trying to find a used gtx 1070 and hope the Oculus Rift has a black friday sale. Not sure which I'd prefer more because VR seems like it'd be a huge help in iRacing.

That's good to hear, sounds like I should have some headroom in the setup.

I was thinking about the ports, the spec sheet shows it has 3 DisplayPort Outputs (and a bunch of USB ports and DVI...) so I think I'm good?

Part of what drew me to it though is that it's tagged as VR ready. I would probably just go straight to VR before buying all the other equipment to go triples now that I think about it. Unless I find out VR makes me puke, then I have a back-up plan!

I would be a little hesitant to trust a 1060 in VR in some other titles. Linus tech tips just did a video testing them and the 1060 was very close but was a few frames shy on benchmarks for VR although it was in the “acceptible” range. With the new 20xx cards coming out, 1070s and 1080s may start getting unloaded and I’d rather spring for the extra power if you ever want to go VR. A 1060 would probably handle iRacing just fine but if you want to play any other titles, especially AAA new ones it may struggle.

I also don’t keep up with it nearly as much as I used to so don’t take my word as gospel.

But yea 3 display ports should be good to go for triple monitors .

If the three monitors are 1080p it should be fine. If it were me, I would increase RAM to 16GB and buy a 128 or 256GB SSD to run games off of/primary drive and use the 1TB as storage.

I think I need to replace my wife's laptop. She has an older 13" macbook Air now and has been happy with it but its a bit slow for what she needs it for when working at home.

Do I want a new 13" air (finally with the Retina screen) or 13" Macbook pro? Any experience with the new stuff?

The Air, in all likelihood, is fine for most people. I'd go that route unless she spends her off-hours editing 4k video or something.

So I've been bitten by the bug. May be time to upgrade some stuff on the ole gaming rig. There are so many options out there for everything. I'm thinking an SSD is what I'll consider first after a GPU upgrade. Load times could use some improvement.

Anyone have monitor recommendations? I'm using two ancient monitors that aren't similar at all and cap at 60hz.

I really like the wider format monitors instead of having two. The 34" 21:9 LG I have is now $300 which is a good deal IMHO. If I did actual work on it I'd want a higher res one but 1080 vertical is more than enough for me and if you put it close to your face the wide format is enough for good FOV in a racing game. And of course if you have the budget they make 'em bigger and wider too!

Yeah, I have enough old monitors to handle what j need on the sides. What's the deal with all of these different cord? So HDMI is NOT the way to go? I think my main uses display port or dvi

I think display port is capable of more pixels and daisy chaining, HDMI/DVI is more limited. I've never done 3 monitors or 4k+ so I'm not educated on it, still on HDMI.

HDMI is fine. There was a brief time before HDMI 2.0 came out that it couldn't handle 4k but 2.0 fixed that. Anything made in the past few years is 2.0+
Most decent monitors will have both anyway.

I'd probably look for something that supports USB-C. If for nothing else to reduce cabling (since you can power the monitor and provide signal in one shot.)

Not many graphics cards come with usb C as far as I know. I wonder if using a DP -> USB C adapter would still allow it to power it.

All of my PC stuff is working on an extremely low budget. Can't afford a built PC and a track car Big Grin

Good point - forgot you'd just be getting new GPU.

Tangentially related - my co-worker visited a friend at NVIDIA and came back with a free 2080TI and NVIDIA Shield. I was very jealous.
