website, google, linkedin, etc. FYI I hate when they want me to know about the company.

I'll echo Kaan's suggestions on where to look, but I disagree about researching the company. I think if it is somewhere you want to work you should do a bit of homework. I'm talking about maybe 20-30 minutes on their website, not hours of research. You should know what product/service they sell, maybe a competitor or two, and jot down any recent awards or accolades they might have received. It shows that you are interested in the company/role.

Echoing what everyone else has said.

Google, linkedIn, friends who work there.

“I saw you were top xx companies to work for according to Fortune”

I like the culture...

I recommend coming up with 2-3 questions based on your research and leading into them by saying, "I was researching and wondered..."

You get credit for being pro-active and also get your own questions answered. I've often used people asking me no questions as the tie-breaker on whether I want to hire them. YMMV, but appearing legitimately curious and interested can only help.

For anything remotely close to 300k total compensation I'd sign up tuh-day. Work 5 10s, some weekends, beat me up and take my lunch money idgaf, I'd still do it for at least a few years to get some things paid off.

I say that but then I can't seem to ever find the motivation to grind out the silly leetcode trivia that would get my foot in the door. I should probably get on that.

For research at least study a company's website. It's not a good look when you can't answer a question that could have been found on their front page. If they've got some kind of slogan or branding I make sure to incorporate that into the conversation at some point.

So, had my final interview Monday and it went very well. The company/team is a lot smaller than my present which I like. The products are really neat and they have real cubicles. HR scheduled a call with me this morning to tell me that they won't have an answer until next week about me, but in the meantime they want me to chat with another team under the Product Wing that does R&D but could possibly lead to a PM role down the line. I'm waiting for more information but I'm not really sure what I would want to do. I'm not looking for a new job for the sake a new job, I'm looking to get into a PM role, but if they offer me more money and a change of scenery but not the exact role I want, do I take it?

If the R&D job looks half interesting, I wouldn't worry about jumping on it. It would probably give you a good foundation and insight into their entire portfolio vs a couple of product lines. Hit them with the standard questions of typical career path or internal opportunities from this group and see what BS they feed you.

Lockheed pulled something similar on me, I interviewed for a network engineer position but ended up getting an offer for a sys admin role. Although they were similar in career levels, the sys admin group paid 10k more than networking, so I gladly took that.

Why not? You're young enough to dabble and aren't an expert in anything yet. It's not going to set you back to experiment for a year or two at a time in different roles.

Welp,

Didn't get either of those positions. That was a lot of work and a lot of time taken to go through that process. Pretty bummed.

After I got laid off from AOL, I had to have my mom drive me to job fairs because I drove a manual and had recently had shoulder surgery. I interviewed with a few companies  where I wasn't really excited about the job, but I needed to pay bills. I didn't get a few. It was a pretty dark time in my life. Eventually, I got a job that would lead to Amazon and Google. I don't think "everything happens for a reason," but I do believe missed connections are opportunities for something better.

Just don't let it get ya down, you're atleast in the situation where this is a voluntary move vs being forced to.

Yup. You still have a job. It stinks when you do not get an offer for something you want, but at least you are not in a position where you absolutely need a job to survive.

One door closes and one opens. I've steamrolled through 2 interviews at a company much closer to my house with a really neat product. I have an on site interview to finish it off next week and I feel very good about it.

However, I'm running out of reasons for taking PTO on such short notice so often. Most likely will have to ask for Monday or Tuesday off... Tomorrow.
