Our microwave is also a Convection oven, so that was our compromise. We use it to convect when we need that little extra oven cooking that doesn't need a long time. It vents to the outside, but not very well. We don't cook things that smoke a lot, so I don't really find it an issue.

So if we went hood, we'd have to put a microwave on the counter.
This is why I'm ending up with a microwave drawer.
I'm a little worried about the ability for the microwave vent to pull smoke off the range and push it 10' out to the exterior wall. It looks like there's only one double-oven + induction range available and its a $3500 GE Cafe.... a little rich for me I think so I think this question answers itself.

What are you guys cooking that produces this much smoke? My wife will burn something once in a while so I just open the back door and turn in the vent fan. A few minutes and the smoke is gone.

Trying to sear a steak in cast iron. The cast iron kind of smokes a little on its own from the seasoning and then the steak smokes a lot even in only a couple minutes. Imagine grilling in your house.... Once we get a gas grill with a side burner, I can go back to doing it outside again.
Also sometimes I bake chicken wings and they smoke a bit.

Bray and scarff is where i bought that microwave i just installed. For the record it was the highest cfm venting microwave i could find. I actually eliminated the outside venting we already had because i needed the duct space, and i never really have a smoke problem. I haven't really tested this one to see how good the charcoal filters do.
Bray and scarf has an induction demo kitchen set up if you want to see it in action. I always wanted gas but maybe you guys are onto something with the temp control benefits. I was considering an LP range when it is time to upgrade.

Charcoal filters do nothing. Run the fan while cooking a few times and wipe the top of the top of the microwave with a damp rag. And you'll see all the grease that passed right through the filter

It was from 2002, so I just decided to pony up for a new one. Seems like the upper thermostat failed, but the repair costs didn't seem worth it given its age.
Also replaced a frozen full-turn valve and some piping that was actually leaking very slowly behind the water heater. I never knew because it apparently dripped right over the drain...
At that age you're bound for a major failure at any time. With the piece of mind for a new one.

I bought appliances today.... including an induction range. Y'all convinced me.
I got an invite for the GE friends & family website and that saved me enough money to fit it in.

We had Calphalon for years - I wasn't a fan. The good news is I think most of their lines are induction compatible.
When we moved to induction, we got a set of these: https://amzn.to/2LBAMFt
One or two have an audible resonance if the stove is at a low setting, but they cook well and are dishwasher/oven safe. I've tested these a handful of times without issue. They have a stainless steel base with aluminum core that seems to spread heat out pretty evenly. With induction, there are less hot spots to worry about. Not sure how they perform on gas but maybe similar. The flat bases are soooo much better than any previous curved bottom pans we had. The inside isn't any of that teflon bullshit, so things like scrambled eggs leave evidence... but cleanup is easy. We've had our for four years and the inside surfaces are scratch free, although we don't use metal utensils. If I was buying today, I'd buy this set again.
