Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste
I almost bought that version, but was holding out because really have no affiliation with the Navy or aviation. Lee selling his Nighthawk alleviated me of that conundrum.

If you're gonna do it, go all in with the blue band.

Saw that one too, for $200 after the coupon.

I have no relationship either, but planes/the blue angels/blue watches are cool.

Blue Angels Nighthawks are great watches for the money! I will say that they are a very dark blue vs a lighter blue. It looks like Jomashop fixed their sample photos because they used to be really vibrant blue but it wasn't the reality of the piece in person. Those photos I am seeing now are more representative of what you get in person.

It's been a few months with the Seiko Lee helped me get and it's been doing just fine. I was a bit worried initially about going to a larger, heavier watch, but it is not uncomfortable as a daily and works well with my gti/quattro/m socks. Smile

Any tips for taking a scratch/scuff out of soft metal? Due to an unfortunate event at work I had to take a guy down to the ground and restrain him. In the process I hit my Tissot up against a nearby chair and put a scuff it in. It isn’t really that bad, but I can see it and I’d like to try to get it out.

That sock company has some dope designs, thanks for the tip Dave!

In other news I got a raise at work so I may be picking another watch soon. Nothing super balla as of yet, maybe just another Citizen or Seiko chronograph.

A good jeweler should be able to buff the case if it really irks you.  You might want to consider picking up a G Shock for daily wear due to the nature of your job... that same scenario is exactly how a friend/ fellow collector broke his old late '60s Seiko 6105 like mine.  Bummer for him, it costs a LOT more to replace now than back then.

Also check your pms! I sent you a message a while back about your tractor, a note from my JD mechanic neighbor Smile

Impulse bought a new smartwatch... and by impulse I mean I lusted after it for a few months and then said "fuck it, I'm getting it." As many of you know, I'd been rocking a fitbit for quite awhile because I loved the notifications while working, in a movie, etc. I stopped wearing it in favor of the Nighthawk, but have been looking to replace it with something that is more activity based and has better smartwatch features. The new Garmin fenix 5 plus was getting a bunch of good reviews, so I pulled the trigger. I've had it about 1.5 weeks - here are my thoughts.

Things I like:
> Smart notifications again... yay!
> Custom faces throw a bunch of cool stats I can live without in my face (see below)
> Sapphire glass and water resistance means I don't have to worry about actually using it.
> It replaces taking my Garmin biking unit with me on hikes, while traveling, to track route etc.
> Four days of battery life with moderate usage, including 100% backlight and not powering down at night
> NFC payment on my wrist is a pretty neat feature that I could easily get used to.
> The display is seriously kickass when outside - it was clearly designed for this.
> The display is always on - I often struggled to get my fit bit to interpret my wrist flick gesture to show the time
> It holds ~500 songs, so I can save phone battery life when riding the bus, etc.
> Native topo and street maps means I'm also bailing on a large, handheld Garmin unit when hiking or traveling.

Things I do not like:
> Smart notifications mirror android's lock screen settings. This means if I don't want people to read my texts while my phone is locked, I also cannot see content on the watch. I can see the who, but not the what. This isn't a deal breaker but annoying.
> The bluetooth got stuck after using my Bose QC35 II during a bus commute and wouldn't reconnect to my phone. It took me 30 minutes to figure out unpairing my headphones fixed the issue.
> The menus are mostly intuitive, but some settings are in odd sub-menus making them hard to find.
> There are apps, widgets, and activities - all in different menus - remembering where what you want is can be confusing.
> The display is muted indoors, especially when using the backlight.
> The price is commensurate with all the features, but is it worth it? Probably not for someone like me, but I could see it for someone who isn't a lazy fat ass (e.g. Mikey).
> Garmin uses a proprietary USB cable that costs $25 if you want a spare/replacement. Fuck you Garmin.

Things I'm indifferent about:
> It's 47 mm. 42 mm used to be too big for me, but then Lee corrupted me. This wears smaller than 47 mm, but I'm on the Nighthawk today and can definitely tell the difference.
> No touchscreen. Button navigation is actually pretty intuitive and becomes muscle memory after some practice. Bonus is buttons work with gloves.

That's nice looking. NFC payment on the wrist is a game changer. I use it every time I'm at Chick fil a and Wegmans. It's so convenient to hold your wrist on the card reader and go. People also think it's pretty cool and gets some funny looks.

I'm sending the Garmin back for a refund after fighting to get Europe maps on it for a few hours last night. All my complaints are small, but they stack to make me not love the watch as much as I want. For the price, the thing should be brainless and it absolutely isn't. Oh well.

Welp, looks like Eleven James went out of business:

https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/what-a...even-james

I never got around to subscribing because when you do the math, you might as well use that money to just buy/finance the watch you want (especially with the 0% deals) and if you don't like it you could just sell it and buy another one.

That and the fact that you could only change watches every couple of months. If you could switch watches every month maybe it would have been more compelling. Oh well, I feel like it's a business model that could succeed with some tweaking but at the same time these guys burned through a couple of million so maybe there's not that much money to be made there.

Movado acquires MVMT Watches Inc for $200million
Quote:The agreement to acquire MVMT Watches Inc., is expected to close around the first of October of 2018. According to the Movado Group’s announcement the purchase price consists of an initial $100 million payment, and two additional payments of $100 million in total. The payments are pre-taxes so the net benefit is expected to total about $85 million now and $85 million more as a result of those two pursuant payments that will be calculated based on MVMT’s financial performance until the buyout is complete.
I don't own one, but I really like the simplistic design on MVMT watches as well as the price point. Also, the two guys that started the company are 26 and 27 years old. Shout out to lazy millennials?

Man that is a huge payout for a business that was started 5 years ago with a crowdfunded campaign. Good on them.

Wow, that's pretty insane. I've been questioning just picking up a few random ones since they are clean, simple designs at a low price point

MVMT watches are like Beats by Dre headphones. Trendy designs, cheap movements, low quality materials, etc, and freaking massive marketing budget.

Will it immediately break on you or be noticeably inaccurate? Probably not. So if you just absolutely love the design and want to buy one anyway, more power to you, just understand that you're paying $100-$200+ for a watch that costs less than $5 to produce. Seiko, Tissot, Casio, Orient, Victorinox, Skagen, Pulsar, Undone, Citizen, Bulova, and Timex are all better places to look for a budget watch. I can probably come up with more if I think about it for a while.

I respect those guys for seeing an opportunity in the market and seizing it, if they can make up a bunch of marketing bullshit to make people buy watches they can turn a 90% profit on, who am I to judge? I just don't recommend buying one if you actually care about getting value for your money.
