what do you guys think about scotch ales? 

Dis not beer thread. Start talking about beer and that's all we'll hear. 

Gin is a weird one. I used to not be a fan, because all I'd had was Bombay Sapphire and Beefeater and that shit tastes like you're giving a christmas bj. But #notallgin tastes like that. Strange Monkey is a local one that's very citrus forward, has just a little bit of that botanical/juniper flavor, and I keep New Amsterdam in my liquor cabinet. A little more christmas-tree-y, but not so bad with a vermouth wash in the glass and a twist of lemon. 

 I too am a fan of white russians, although make your own coffee liqueur. It's too easy to do, no sense in buying Kahlua, which sucks anyway. 

Speaking of, what would you guys say a "well stocked bar" consists of? I imagine there are a few young'ns who just drink jungle juice and jagerbombs and would love to expand their horizons.

So I've been drinking Vodka Martini's lately. Not flavored appletini crap. But a simple vodka martini. I've got a shaker, now I just need to practice making them at home.

There is a surprising variety in flavors in Gin.

...and they all still taste like drinking the water from your christmas tree stand. Not sure how you guys drink that stuff.

I'm not the only one that feels like you're drinking christmas tree water. That's exactly how I describe it verbatim.

Let's see.. My two go two drinks are

1) Filthy Martini (Vodka obviously. Gin is disguting. Preferably potato vodka). What's filthy you say? Take a dirty martini and make it hazy green

2) Manhattan. Great grandfathers drink. 2oz bourbon/whisky, 1 oz sweet vermouth, couple healthy dashed on angostura bitters, +cherry.

2) add 2 parts vodka: 1 part dry vermouth: a disgusting amount of olive juice (love olives)
3) Shake a good 5-10 seconds

4) Pour in martini glass
5) Garnish with your favorite olives (3-4)

You want a decent vodka, rye or bourbon, vermouth (sweet + dry), bitters, gin and something nice and aged to drink neat.

you can make simple syrup on your own, herbs in a pot nearby, and some kind of citrus is handy.

My liquor cabinet is uh.... full but I have some stuff that doesnt get used that often.

3) Hangar 1 Vodka

Ive been drinking a good bit of gin lately and never used to like it. 1/2 gin, 1/2 ginger ale, splash of lemon juice with ice.

You kids ever use egg whites in your cocktails? Supposedly a well crafted whiskey sours uses it. Helps cut the acidity and give it a "silky" texture. It's actually quite common in cocktails little did I know.

IMHO, unless you like a peat-y scotch I think if you've got a bourbon you enjoy then the scotch is superfluous. I say this as a guy with like ?6? whisk(e)ys in my cabinet rn. 

I normally keep Monkey Shoulder on hand, but my sister-in-law got me a bottle of Glenfiddich 12, which is pretty alright. Still prefer bourbon.

I've had a few cocktails with egg whites on the top as a foam. I don't think they are typically mixed in, but I could be wrong. I'm not sure what purpose it serves other than a visual, but they were good.

The pub by us makes a fantastic old fashioned. I asked them for the recipe - turns out the bitters makes a huge difference.

Ever try it with caper berries? They look like tadpoles, but they are awesome if you're a brine lover like it sounds like you are.
