Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste
The Skagen analogs are junk. They literally once vibrate to tell you something has happened - there's no actual detail to help you determine what's happening.

Rex's version is getting closer to what I've been looking for, but it's still not quite there. Is it really that hard to embed a small LCD/LED screen at the bottom so I can see the subject of the text I'm receiving?

The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. Skagen also makes some handsome ones too (saw them at the mall yesterday):

It does have a traditional battery, a CR2430. I do wish it had CR2032 instead, as I keep those in the house for weapon sights, but if I have to swap the battery every 6 months or so I'm ok with that. Store will swap it for free, but the cells themselves are inexpensive so whatever. The management app has a battery life indicator as well, so you shouldn't get caught napping.

Better than charging it every day.

Skagen does have some handsome hybrids, I'm guessing they work in a similar manner.

I don't know about subject, but the Nokia Steel HR might offer it for you?

What you describe would be nice, but I think might be technically more difficult/expensive than a "real" smartwatch.

Oh, that's even closer... but I can't tell if it's a notification or content. I already have custom vibrate patterns set up for important people, so I know my wife is texting... I just don't know if the reason is important enough for me to pull my phone out in a meeting or risk getting a ticket from the rozzers. I suspect a lot of the thickness comes from heart rate tracking, which I don't need. Activity is nice, but my phone does that if I really want to know how sedentary I am. I think maybe I'm just not the target market.

Yes! Now make the face actually something I'd like to wear (e.g. chrono) and I'm sold.

Yea, it's really simple and I'm digging it.

I saw them a couple weeks ago and signed up to get notified when the silver/brown is in stock.

I love my Nixon, but it's a monster and doesn't play well with long sleeve button up shirts.

IMO, if you want a Chrono, you may as well go full on smart watch. Cause you make the Chrono tell you what ya want, vs obvious of the mechanical Chrono being unchangeable.

I get why, I love analog Chrono watches, just think you may be in a bit of a niche, so that may be as good as you'll get.

My only issue with a full smartwatch is battery life. I don't mind having to charge it, but I'd really prefer not having to do it every day. Also, while I'm complaining, the flick of the wrist to see what time it is on my fitbit can be pretty annoying at times. I want time to be always on, text contents, a battery that lasts a week, and a good looking face. I guess that's niche, but it shouldn't be. At some point, battery tech will get us there, but in the meantime my nighthawk judges me every morning I put my fitbit on my wrist.

The battery life on the iWatch is great. Usually 75% by 8pm (wear time for me starts around 6:45am). I charge it every night only because when it is on the charger it acts as a clock and a simple nudge of the nightstand wakes it up for ~10 seconds to see the time. Beats having to grab my phone and click it.

Apple needs to step their game up on faces. Unless anything has changed they still don't have 3rd party faces. The choices are pretty limited - you can swap out different icons and what not but you can't get any real watch face knockoffs or things like that.

Yea, the Apple Watch faces are lacking. Also, someone tell Apple that watches are Round. Not shaped like a piece of dentyne ice

This.

I would actually wear a second band on the other wrist if it was the size of a live strong bracelet if I couldild just get phone notifications the scroll up the band.

That was a good read, thanks. I guess i didn't fully appreciate all the finer details that go into one, they're still kind of ruined for me since every Wall Street Finance Bro on the Path has one.

So I swung by the local Seiko outlet this weekend and found out that they were going out of business  Sad  Seiko corporate apparently is pulling the plug on all company stores and will only keep the boutiques open (that carry their higher end watches).  It's a shame because this store apparently was doing really well and I've made friends with the store managers and two salespeople over the last few months.  I had them help me size the OEM bracelet for the Samurai and took a look around the store since they were fire saleing pretty much everything.  Most of the store was 80% off but everything was discounted, even the really high end Astron and Presage pieces.  What's crazy is, they told me anything they don't sell will get smashed with a hammer!!   Sad Sad  I was like wtf why?  Apparently it has something to do with preventing the pieces from getting to the grey market or something.

Anyway this caught my eye because of the textured khaki dial and after trying it on I decided I couldn't say no, especially for the price.  Solar, Perpetual calendar, super comfortable calf skin leather...and when I got it home I discovered that it had a sapphire crystal and a screw down crown!  That is a lot of watch for the money.

Pics!

My Samurai is back at NEWW getting some dust removed from under the crystal so I'm having him do a black date wheel while it's in there.  That should be the end of that project Smile

Still no word on my vintage diver.  I spoke with IWW about 3 weeks ago and he says it should be back to him within the next few weeks.  I'm not real convinced so I'm starting to get antsy.  But the whole Instagram thing is taking off a bit!  Some aftermarket companies started following me so that is super cool.  Further down the watch nerd hole I go!   Cool

Were there any other good deals? I've made exactly zero progress fixing my old kinetic one.

If you wander back by, mind seeing what's good in the 1-300 range?

So many good deals man...they still had some Samurai's left (one I just bought and modded) for less than what I paid at the lowest priced reputable online retailer (less than $300)

If I swing back by before they close next weekend I will take some pics and message you.  To put things in perspective, that watch MSRP is $525...I got it for $100 and some change. That's less than half of even the Jomashop prices, with a full factory warranty

Another thought, you could call the Charlotte Seiko outlet and see if they could send you a few pics of stuff they have in stock right now in that range.  If they let you purchase something over the phone, you can have them leave it behind the counter and I'll go grab it / ship it for you.  That's probably the easiest since they're liquidating literally everything

I talked to Ellie today and she was WAY more helpful than an employee working at a closing store should be.

She's going to email me some models they have left that fit my rough description. She wasn't sure if she could take payment over the phone but was going to find out. May have to have a few choices and see if any are left if you go back again.

If 80% is how they are marking them, sounds like deals to be had! She had to call me back because she was helping a guy check out 25+ watches, so I'm sure we'll see some on eBay soon.

Do they sell the models listed on the site currently, or are they last year/discontinued ones since they are an outlet? I was going to try and look around to see if anything caught my eye. Would like to stay with a steel band, but I suppose that could be changed out on most cases?

I know we talked on FB chat but I just saw this!  Yeah they have a mix of mostly new stuff and maybe some older ones.  They had a bunch of Astrons, Presages and Samurais though that are brand new models!  Ellie is awesome, I was hanging out there for a bit this weekend.  Let me know what she says and if you find something you like I can swing in and pick it up!
