Plan is to give it a once-over during the winter for a springtime sale. I'm not going to allow myself to drive it for fear I might enjoy a convertible.

When places seem unable to handle "no cheese". I think it's been like 3 places in the last month that have messed up and left cheese on my dishes. I don't want to be an ass and send it back, or I don't pay attention and eat it before realizing.

You have a health need that requires the restaurant listen to your simple request, assuming it's "hey no cheese on this burger" and not something asinine like "queso dip, no cheese." Absolutely send it back, you're not being an ass by doing so. Not your problem that the employee can't listen.

If your "I can't eat this" was a "I will need an Epipen thirty seconds after eating this" the restaurant would be in all sorts of trouble for not paying attention after you asked. They will benefit for future customers beyond just you if you say something and send it back.

I don't know how many times my fiance has asked for no croutons on salad because she's gluten intolerant (like forreal intolerant but not anaphylaxis allergic) and they literally just pick the croutons out and you can see a ton of bread crumbs still in the salad.

My mom is as well, she pretty much just doesn't go out. And if we do manage to take her out, she just has to be annoyingly specific with the server and explain the whole thing. At least this usually works, the server double checks with the chef, and if it's a nice place either they have another menu and a plan to flag her order, and/or the chef or manager will come out and babysit the process because they know some fool will plop a roll on her plate.

Maggianos takes it to another level and the manager comes out and goes over the entire order to make sure it's gluten free and will even omit things they are fried with gluten things from dishes. (like the prosciutto bits from the salad). Then other places will have a gluten free menu (capital ale house) and have french fries on but when you ask about getting the fries, they say oh yea they're fried with all three other fried food.

Beers definitely help numb the suck in your lunch

Next time, chug three beers before you order and you won't have the carrot burger problem

Just FYI, a recent Kickstarter came out with a “gluten” tester.

My sister has Celiac disease and she brought this new invention when we went out to dinner last week. She says she now brings it everywhere. You take a piece of food and put it in the tester. After 5 minutes it will tell you if it has gluten in it or not. For those who actually need it, this piece of technology is a breakthrough. She has discovered a numerous amount of places claiming gluten free that are not (or have cross contamination problems bad enough to be picked up).

Looks like it’s called Nima.

Yea I saw that a little while back but seems like it was pricey and required a new "test strip" or equivalent every time adding to the price. If you're actually celiac, then I could see it being worth it although how sure of it's accuracy can you actually be because it's not like she's then going to eat the food to find out if the meter is calibrated correctly. I only looked into it briefly but i don't think small amounts of gluten affect my fiance that much.

Although does your sister drink gluten reduced beer by chance? Wondering what it's reading would be on that meter. Joëlle drinks omission and I've been curious how reduced the gluten is. Same with most liquors claiming they distilling process removes most gluten while others carry specific gluten free options.

What they really need to work on is an effective pill that neutralizes gluten similar to lactaid pills for people who are lactose intolerant.

She can’t have any gluten. Period. I get tested every now and then because it can be age onset as well since it’s genetic. Womp womp.

I do wonder how accurate it is, at least for her she would rather have it having false positives than a false negative. She says she loves it but for her it isn’t about budget.

I didn't know Maggianos had a GF menu, does she like it? There is an italian place near me that offers GF options for almost all of their meals but the brand of pasta they use is kinda sucky. Kickass mussells tho.

Shameless plug for "B" in One Loudoun. Can't recommend it enough for people with food allergies. The manager has a family member with a severe nut allergy or something and just "gets it."

For people like me they keep a dedicated GF fryer so I can actually have the fries and tots, and they go ahead and just make some of their products GF by default. The onion rings have a cornflake style crust and 99.9% of customers are none the wiser. For people with weirder, or more dangerous anaphylactic types of allergies, they actually keep a massive binder with every ingredient of every menu item they sell. I've seem them break that bitch out to figure out exactly what someone can and can't order.

I can't do the "Gluten Removed" beers, idk if it's because of the remaining trace amounts or if what's left is just "too close" and my body doesn't like it. I have a similar problem with GF Oats/Oatmeal, and Cheerios. I can eat them every once in a while, but if I do it 2-3 days in a row it'll fuck me up. I've never had an issue with wheat-based liquors, I don't think it's possible for any of the original proteins to survive the distillation process.
