Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste
I ordered a cheaper leather band from CS despite Lee's warnings because it was literally the only one I could find for sale at any price point in the color and stitching I wanted. I'll report back with feedback to see if my experience is the same as Lee's.

Yeah who knows they definitely could have changed their materials since then!  I have just gotten so spoiled because the Hirsch leather strap I got for free with my vintage diver is such high quality.

I'm with scotty, can't be here long or often.

It started with Ken's Breitling, a perfectly beautiful blue face watch and I wasted too much time looking at watches I know I can't afford. (Congrats on the watch and marriage BTW)

Then I come back and see Lee's slush fund got an injection. The up close pictures of the Rolex make the workmanship really stand out. The perfection of the bezel numbers engraving is incredible. Congrats on the great year and Rolex Lee! Probably good I wasn't in here for the sale of the Air Blue...

That alligator band does look incredible on that watch Joey!

I really do like the look of the Nighthawk but I'm pretty sure that's the one I made a joke about in the pre-watch thread thread. I was genuinely curious what the function of the dial and all the markings were. I mean, it can't actually measure pressure or weight so it was little WTF. Being able to use the bezel to do calculations makes sense though. The only other thing I could think of was using it to determine how much is left of something that depletes over time. For example, if you have something like an air tank that loses 4psi per hour, you can set the dial so that the hour hand will point to what is left so you don't have to do the math and possibly forget the starting point or something.

I'm looking forward to Christmas, I'll have a couple bands on my list for the Victorinox so I can switch up the look a bit and on the practical side would like a Garmin that doesn't need a chest band, likely the 235.

Protrek is up on the block! MMers get a better price, but be warned this is a big ass watch. http://forums.watchuseek.com/f29/fs-prot...84339.html

Nighthawk is heading to a new home with Chris! Enjoy it buddy!

Steve, yeah I think the rotating bezel is designed to track how far you can fly on X amount of fuel, as well as distance over time at certain speeds. You can also do basic arithmetic with it. I never learned how to do any of these things but if I was a pilot I probably would have!

Haha - sorry and thanks bud!

As for the bezel, i actually have nerdily used it a couple times. Surprisingly it's easier sometimes for quick multiplication/division then grabbing my cell phone, unlocking and opening calculator app. Since foreign exchanges are basically just multiplication, you can set it at an exchange and convert prices on the fly - which i kind of look forward to using.

So one of my watches came yesterday. I ordered a Seiko 5 Automatic, 21 jewels with a blue band. Nothing fancy, but I wanted something I can wear out in the field that looks good but I don't care too much if it gets beat up a little. It's 37mm, so a little smaller than most of my others, and the band is narrower than I thought, but overall I like it. The little rings on the clasp are sorta annoying when putting the watch on, but once you pull the strap through they don't move at all, which is nice. Jomashop didn't send my free watch and told me that it was because I ordered it the day after the free watch day was posted. I sent them back an email telling them that their site honored my coupon at checkout and gave me an invoice noting that watch was part of my purchase. They then agreed to send it to me and said they would ship it within the next 24-48 hours.

Not sure what is annoying you about the rings, but you could try running the band like this.[Image: 871afb3d78371d6140fb373a9eb721ee.jpg][Image: 709d4e40f32ca0de960b432804ff9f25.jpg]

The slide rule bezel is something I recently became very interested in. Not only can you do pilot-type stuff Lee mentioned, which isn't pertinent to me, you can do pretty much any conversion that matters today. Currency conversion is a big one, but it also has markings for km-to-miles and kg-to-lbs. That, combined with dual time zone, makes it a great feature for people who travel internationally and either don't want to do brain math or whip our their phone. The only hitch is you have to understand how to use logarithmic scale.

Here's a decent intro to slide rule bezels, although I think he explains it in a more complicated way than it needs to be: https://youtu.be/RuK_77DEUfw?t=5m58s

Nice!  Definitely a great purchase and I am glad JS made you whole on the free watch.  Let us know how it is when it gets here!  I don't think I have ever seen nato rings being used as keepers like that.  The good thing is, you should be able to swap that out for any nato you want if it starts to bug you.  That was a good choice though for the strap material, they are super durable!!

So due to an illness in my family I wasn’t home until late this evening. I came home to find that the fedex man had delivered my wife’s main Christmas present...the same day she chose to work from home. She obviously saw it, so in exchange, she went ahead and gave me my main present, a Citizen Nighthawk like Lee just sold. I still need to have it sized, but after messing with it for a few minutes, I love it!

So the PRW-3100Y arrived and it was a great acquisition. It wears MUCH thinner, lighter and smaller than the S3500. It's about perfect for my wrist. It takes some time to set a watch like this up and interestingly when I was calibrating the compass it turns out that the watch was so accurate that it helped me discover that the compass sensor on my phone was actually way off. So I ended up calibrating my phone against the watch instead of vice versa! The STN display is also a huge improvement, it is really legible at almost any angle. I can't get it to manually sync to the atomic clock yet but I had the same issue with the 3500 until it had a full charge and enough power to do it. The last sync it had was sometime in June probably sitting in the factory or on a shelf somewhere.

Pics!

That looks awesome man! Much slimmer looking. I’m in the same boat as you with smaller wrists (although mine is a good bit thicker now following my surgery), but I can’t pull off the 45+mm watches. I like how that watch has all the usefulness of the other Protrek and G-Shock watches without the size.

Thanks dude!  I completely agree, it wears much smaller than even the pictures show.  Still has a great presence but much more manageable.

I couldn't get the atomic function to manually sync or even enter the cycle on this watch.  I saw a few other instances of this happen on the forums so hopefully it's just a glitch.  Amazon is awesome and a return is on the way...another reason why I prefer to buy on Amazon vs. eBay any day (I found one for like $20 cheaper on the bay but figured it was worth the peace of mind...and it was)

If you're gonna impulse buy a used watch, you might as well buy it from Lee.

The truth is I didn't exactly impulse buy it because I'd recently wishlisted a dual time, slide rule Orient: http://amzn.to/2AxSJzz

I was more interested in dual time, but I started doing more research about slide rules and kinda had a nerdgasm. I'm interested in it for all the reasons I stated above and realized the Nighthawk made much better use of it than the Orient. The pre-markings for imperial to metric on distance, volume, and weight are really cool, in my opinion. I'd googled Nighthawks a bit over the last few weeks, but never got serious about. Then, a good deal for one with a crystal sapphire popped up and the rest is history.

If I'm honest, the watch wears better on my wrist than my Tag. I like that watch, but it's 41x16 and feels really tall on my wrist. This watch is 42x13 and the extra width is meaningless given it's shorter and sits flat against the wrist (the Tag is more pill shaped). The weight is solid, but definitely not the heaviest watch I own. Lighter is better for me, so this will likely be for air travel. Mostly. The watch feels way better than what I paid for it, although I will say it kinda has a tinny feel... which actually works with the aircraft theme. I have other watches that feel like lead bricks, so I appreciate this one feels a bit different. Setting this watch is not intuitive AT ALL, in my opinion. You set the plane hand (24 hour hand) with the minutes at crown position 2, then move the regular hour hand by one hour increments in position 1. I'm usually pretty good at intuiting that stuff, but I had to google it. The screw down crown is a nice touch.

I need to add two links, so I'll have to look and see if there's an easy way to do this myself. I don't have time to find a decent shop around here and I loathe jewelry stores, so I won't be wearing it for a bit longer. I'm maxed out on my 10-watch case, so I'll have to demote something to a drawer.

Lastly, I told the wife yesterday "I bought a watch from Lee." Judging from her face, I think she thought that meant I spent a few grand. She didn't really say anything, but when I tried to show it to her tonight she said she'd already taken a peek while it was on the table. I then showed her how to slide rule will help with conversions and she thought that was cool... especially since I always have to do them for her in my head. win/win.
