Guess it’s time for the train horn install
#1
Apparently the D’s in Tri Delt don’t stand for the dynamic daughter drivers of JMU because I had a nice surprise coming home the other night. Minding my own business in the right lane as a Ford Escape starts edging into my lane. Look to my right, no road due to construction...great. Lay on horn for 5 seconds and try to slow down but she still manages to trap me in and side swipe the car. My very first car accident :’)

At first I thought it was only cosmetic but after looking closer, it seems like the LR quater panned is slightly deformed. I am planning on dropping it off at Chantilly Auto Body on Thursday when I leave for AZ to hopefully have it done when I get home.

My question to everyone is two fold. Firstly, does anyone have good or bad experience with this shop? It was recommend to me by my personal shop as well as who Sterling BMW goes through for repairs. I was also recommend to Terry’s Auto Body by a friend’s small dealership but seems like a smaller operation, which I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. Also both shops are State Farm approved which makes it really easy for insurance to cover everything under her fault.

Secondly, feel free to share your stories of other dumb drivers on the road and what happened with your aftermath. Never really hear about these things but I’m sure it’s happened.

I kept my Ford Escape parked at Hunter's Ridge as a freshman because we couldn't have parking passes on campus. Some dingbat slammed into it while parked (parallel on the street) and got it pretty good. Needed a wheel/tire, tie rod, and some body work.

We had a MManhunt based on the taillight plastic left at the scene and tied it back to a V6 Mazda6 from a certain couple of model years. Never actually caught the driver though.

Is it Terry's Auto Body or the Terry's Body Shop in Purcellville? If it's the latter I can vouch for that place, I've had a few cars worked on there. I lived right around the corner from there for years and I went to school with Terry's son. They're good people and did excellent work.

The damage is cosmetic, and can be fixed up. I just had a shop in Ashburn fix up some similar damage on the E91 that wasnt repaired properly - they did a nice job.

sorry bud. i know very few people who had a car at JMU that didn't get hit at least once. just the nature of putting a lot of young driver traffic in a concentrated space with tons of distractions.

consider installing a dashcam, particularly one that remains on for a few minutes after you shut the car off, or that has a g-sensor that will detect if the car was bumped and automatically turn on and start recording even if the car has been shut off for a long time. it could help you out if you get hit while parked. installation isn't hard and i have a walk-through in the dashcam thread here in the Lounge.

i've ranted about it a couple times, but for the record my old subaru was hit multiple times, always while parked or stopped at a light. i just learned to drive extremely defensively...always trying to predict what people will do, looking for a constant "out" to bail to and generally trying to put the car wherever there is open space. not much else you can do. people are generally dumb as hell.

I've honestly been more afraid for my vehicles in NOVA than at Jmu. I never really had any scares besides someone puking on my Tacoma and messing up the wheel finish.

Yeah I've never had an issue in Harrisonburg.  Worst thing that has happened to one of my cars here is a door ding in my Subaru.  The roads aren't that packed so it's easy enough to drive defensively and avoid the occasional inattentive driver.  It's not like nova where everyone is driving like they're drunk and on meth.

I had my WRX keyed on every single quarter panel in Hunters Ridge back in the day. Needless to say, I left it parked in Nova and drove a beater Subaru wagon (with chrome autozone spinners) for the rest of my years there

My apartment at the time was right at the edge of I think Devon lane or whatever that road is that goes down to Foxhill. So drunk kids were always cutting through right there to go to parties and coming back through it. I guess a bright WRB WRX was too much for some drunk hater to handle

Terry's Body Shop. I was between them and the bigger Chantilly Auto Body, both seem like good companies, just one small scale and one big scale, so I was having trouble decerning between the two. Honestly not sure how to decide, but I'm glad you have been there before (well not glad, but you know what I mean  Big Grin). Would you say there was no way of knowing that repairs were ever done, as that mainly the goal.

Her insurance is covering it all, as long as that place is State Farm certified. Do you have a lot of experience with them?

Yeah Terry did some work on several different makes of vehicle for me and it was all impeccable.  That's been a while ago obviously but IIRC he was the body shop that all of the local Subaru dealers outsourced their body repair to (and probably other dealers as well).  I think he also did the repairs on my IS300 when the deer smashed the side, and the damage from that was way worse than yours.  You couldn't tell it had ever been touched.  Your mileage may vary of course but they are honest and have been around a long time

Had a a girl rear end my Supra in Pheasant Run, had the rear quarter panel on the same Supra smashed in on Port Road, had my Corvette keyed on Devon Lane and had my Dodge Ram my dad left me totaled by a drunk driver in the same parking lot on Devon Lane. Fuck JMU Drivers.

On another hand, while I was President of MM I was asked to give a speech to Tri-Delt on general car care and maintenance. Obviously my words of wisdom have not been passed down to younger generations of the sorority.

Why does it seem like Pheasant had the worst drivers of all [emoji23]

I’m at D&V now getting an estimate as they had the best reviews, partner with my dealership, and partner with Ferrari do Washington so I feel like I’m in good hands here. We’ll see what the estimate comes out to.

On another note, had anyone ever dealt with diminished value claims through insurance? I.E. the car is now worth less when selling due to the accident so simply fixing the car isn’t fully covering the customer, so a check must be written for the lost value in resale. It’s something I’m toying around with, especially since State Farm lost a class action years back stating they must cover customers for this.

When my VW was rear ended with like 3,000 miles on it I ran estimates in KBB for the difference between "excellent" and "fair" condition and asked them to send a check. It was like $450 or something, and the insurance company coughed it up without argument.

D&V sounds like the best shop in town (although they know it and are priced accordingly), my buddy had the front of his M3 resprayed and they did a gorgeous job matching the custom color he has on it.

A family friend, who happens to be a lawyer, won a claim using the diminished value argument on a Jaguar. It's there and can be done. His involved getting a quote at carmax after the repairs were complete and comparing that to other vehicles of similar year/mileage without an accident on the carfax.
