Buying a brand new car that you don't like to mod it seems like a horrible idea and, as a result, I love it for you.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

I guess i don't see the allure of a manual transmission daily driver when you live in NOVA. Just get the nicest flappy paddle BMW wagon with a warranty that's in your budget and call it a day man. I feel like you're making this way harder than it needs to be

This is the only time I will say it and I hope this notion passes before consuming me with a cloud of dread:

Right now, today, I regret selling my A4 Avant.

There, its out there.  I thought I'd have an easier time finding an E91 wagon.

And, I'd rather drive an automatic F31 than the golf alltrack.  The cargo space on the alltrack is quite a bit larger, its new/warrantied, I have to admit the ground clearance would be nice for camping.  The wife really likes it but she also likes very practical things and her family only buys very boring and practical cars and keeps them for 200k miles.

So, I'll indulge you Chris, and admit you're right that one car to rule them all is a fools errand given the current state of cars in America.  The right answer is the Alltrack as the camping/dog/wife car and just fire up the revolving door (dog) for whatever occupies the other driveway spot.  But in the mean time, I'd have to not hate driving it, so if I buy one, it gets tuned and some pipes.

I dont know how I went from being OK with the Ridgeline as my only vehicle, which is far more boring to drive than any golf ever made, to the idea of a 3-pedal stock alltrack being intolerable, I'll never know.  My brain works in a very curious and broken way.

We're going to Chicago tomorrow and on the way from the airport to the hotel, stopping to kick the tires on an E91 at a small dealer.

I live 4 miles from work and go to the office at 7:30am and my wife takes the train into DC.  As a life rule, I dont make a habit of sitting in traffic.

And yes, I'm making this harder than it needs to be but I'm a stubborn ass and because I dont have long commutes or other inconveniences in my life I have to find new and interesting ways to make it difficult.

Why did you sell the A4 so quickly? It seemed to check all of your boxes and still does. Unfortunately, what's done is done, but I'm just curious as to what the motivation was.

Maintaining it was getting tiresome, and it was going to need a timing belt next year and I got an offer for it.

I have a deposit on a 2011 E91 with 60k miles now.

Looks like that one has all the right packages. For my next daily driver I really want keyless entry/start again. I forgot how convenient it was until I drove my parents car with it recently. It's not a huge issue, but it's really nice not to have to fumble with keys at all when carrying shit to my car in the morning and I'm already pissed about being awake before 10AM anyway.

Agree.  But this one is half the age/mileage.  Should serve me well for at least a few years.

Love the car but as a previous lifetime resident of the northeast, I'm already feeling bad for you if you need to do anything with a bolt under the car. I may still have a case or 3 of PB Blaster you can have.
Did they get you any undercarriage shots?

Dunno.  Maybe.

I'd probably just start with the APR stage 1 tune and go from there.  The sales manager also suggested it too, said they dont really care about those for warranty service.

Well sure they'll say that before you buy the car and something breaks. Ask them to put that in writing and watch them squirm.

So............... my old A4 is back up for sale. The current owner has looked after it pretty well, it seems.

I'm really tempted to buy it and put a K04 in it. That would truly be, revolving that door, dog. I would then be right back where I started with an A4 Avant & a Diesel VW, lolz.
