Roast or Toast - The Beer Trolling Thread
#1
Making fun of what people drink is a great past time. This is thread is for everyone to post beers they really like and for everyone else to tell them how terrible their taste is.

I'll start - this is awesome. The lower the IBU the better.

The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

So this is like the dead short lived mm beer exchange thread?

I drink Cider not beer and they rarely have crazy craft stuff around here and when they do, it usually sucks.

You're in like the Mecca of cider though :'(

Found anything unusual and good? My go to is bold rock IPA right now but have a bunch of different stuff on hand for when I want to switch it up.

No gluten. And most of them aren't that bad. The European stuff is definitely high at like 30 or 40g but I think bold rock is 14g and Ace is only like 12g.

Edit: Budweiser is 11g of carbs. And my cider number count total carbs not just grams of sugar so most American ciders are equivalent to beer

You gotta dig deeper than the standard Angry Orchard/Woodchuck varieties. Not that there's anything wrong with those brands, the regular flavors are just shit.

Some of my favorites I can remember off the top of my head, in approximate order of preference/purchase frequency:

Angry Orchard Stone Dry (Slightly malty flavor, dry without being too tart, I consider this a lager substitute for celiacs. Makes a hell of a boilermaker if you drop a shot of decent bourbon in one.)
Bold Rock IPA (A bit sweet for my tastes but the hop flavor is nice, I have a 4 pack of pint cans at home, interested to see if they taste different than the bottles I usually get)
Woodchuck Hopsation
Jack's "Jack's Blend" (Fair warning, they seem to struggle with quality control, sometimes the cans are awesome, sometimes they taste a bit off. They also play around with the formula so you never know quite what to expect. Last weekend I got some on draft and it was fucking perfect.)
Woodchuck Daychaser (Nice, inoffensive sipper without too much sugar.)
Woodchuck Semi Dry ( ^ same same)
Sonoma Cider The Anvil (Allegedly influenced by bourbon flavors, it's pretty good. They have an absinthe flavored variety (The Pulley) that is weird and sort of gross and really good at the same time if you're in the mood for it)
Ace Joker Dry (6.9% ABV, very dry, very tart)

Some general rules of thumb

Always check the sugar content on the bottle. 3-5g is going to be extremely tart and sour. IMO the sweet spot is 7-10g. I can tolerate up to about 13g which is where a lot of your hopped varieties land. Anything over that is going to be sickly sweet and taste like apple juice soda.

Avoid clear bottles. We've made good friends with the manager/bar tender of a place near us and she says cider is even more delicate than beer when it comes to light and oxygen. A 30 second delay from filling to sealing the cans/bottles can have a huge effect on the final product. That's probably why every six pack of Jack's I get is a bit different.

If you're really adventurous and into some funky shit, get into unfiltered/unpasteurized stuff. I gave Zach one last night from an Austin Microbrewery that was way too much for me but he liked it. :dunno:

Austineast cider? The company I worked for distributed it. I never cared for it.

I haven't cared for the Sonoma stuff either.

I used to be hung up on ace pear and Ace pineapple (which is a pretty good beach drink). Kopparberg is pretty good but way to high in sugar to have more than a couple in a night. The Stella cider isn't bad either. Comes in a clear bottle which is surprising considering the care Stella is supposed to give to their products if you believe their commercials.

I actually bought the cans of BR ipa because they're cheaper and thought they'd have better carbonation because sometimes it seems the twist off bottles are a little flatter than others but the cans actually seemed worse but YMMV.

If you like the dryer stuff, you might like the ace blackjack 21. Pricey but I found it on clearance once cause I don't think it sells well at it's normal price.

on the cider note, there's an orchard near here that makes their own, it's more of a dry old school style, or so they say. Tried it when were were picking apples one year but can't remember what they called it.

My go-to for a while now is pretty unoriginal, but tasty.

Yeah it was the Austineast

I don't love the Ace Pineapple but it's not bad, I hear the pear is surprisingly good.

Not a fan of the stella one. :dunno: I'll definitely keep an eye out for the Ace Blackjack.
