Hey guys, time has come to start looking for some new summer tires. From the limited research I've done, the best size to go for with my stock wheels is 205/55, and I'm looking to spend under $100 per tire.
Tires will serve mainly as my daily-driven summer set, with hopefully a good number of autocrosses per year. Might see some limited track time eventually, but not a priority.
I've found a few in the range, but I'd like to see what you guys have to say before mentioning anything.
Thanks!
See if you can still nab a set of the Hankook RS3 on clearance.

Don't have them in the 205, but they do in the stock 195 size still at tire rack, $98 before delivery.
RE71R, RS3, Rival S, ZII Star Spec
Can't really go wrong with any of those.
Conti DW.
All those are really agressive unless that is what you are looking for?

Good time to ask a question, what are the downsides of having that sort of aggressive tire?
Also, no DW's in my size(s)

Tramlining, noise, wear (RE71R wears extremely quick), scary cold weather traction.
That said, you are in a miata. I would go agressive.

Not too worried about cold since I have a winter set, so I guess I guess aggressive would be fine.
Also, discount tire is doing a special and I could pick up either Dunlop DZ102's or Yoko S.drive's for right around $300 delivered after rebate, versus the RS3's at around $450 delivered.
Does that price difference accurately reflect the performance difference?
I have never liked S Drives.
Those things will fall apart under hard autox and track driving

I'll echo that too, I had a set of S Drives on the M3 back in the day and they didn't hold up well for their performance category.
Now: 07 Porsche Cayman S | 18 VW Tiguan
Then: 18 VW GTI Autobahn | 95 BMW M3 | 15 VW GTI SE | 12 Kia Optima SX | 2009 VW GTI | 00 BMW 540i Sport | 90 Mazda Miata | 94 Yamaha FZR600R | 1993 Suzuki GS500E | 2003 BMW 325i | 95 Saab 900S
I had a set of DZ102's, they're "fine" but noticeably worse than a Star Spec (at the trade-off of longer life).
Any 200TW tire will last eh, 10k street/autocross miles. Maybe more. They just wear quickly.

Can confirm DZ102s did not enjoy autocrossing. I was told that going in and I knew it. I accept my punishment. Good tires for the street but definitely would go more aggressive/sticky for a summer only.

If you can put up with the tires only lasting 10k miles like Jake mentioned I'd definitely pick up the RS3's in 195. You will enjoy the extra grip. They'll just be bricks in anything near freezing so be aware.

what you need is those Star Specs from like 2013 that DJ had. The tires that never died.

OG Direzza Star Specs for the win, too bad they wouldn't keep up nowadays.

Gonna hijack this thread since we own the same car. I have Nitto NT450s with tons of tread left, so I'm going to keep them on the stock wheels and use them for DDing, but I was considering getting a second set of wheels for autox/trackdaysbro. Thinking about going with 15x7 Team Dynamic Pro Races and BFG Rival S in 205/55.
Tell me why I'm wrong or right and what to do instead.

Nobody cares how sticky you think BFG comp TAs are :p
Just kidding!
BFG Rivals are good, if you want to get technical the Rivals are more oriented towards heavier/high horsepower cars where the re71r does great on lighter cars. Either one is going to work for your application as you aren't chasing hundredths here...

RE-71r "cheater tire" as some call it is all around better tire. The Rivals aren't bad at all its just the RE-71r are just that bit better if you care for tenths. If you don't care get the cheaper tire.
