Oh, my brother came by this past weekend with his first firearm purchase - a Winchester model 1873, made in Japan, in .357/.38. I figured he was going to pick up a 10/22 or similar, but we watched a lot of westerns growing up so this makes sense, and lemme tell you what, it's a ton of fun. Fairly quiet, hardly any recoil, and beautiful to hold and manipulate.
We finished a box of Geco .38 off by both getting a little cowboy-action-y to see how fast we could get accurate rounds on target which was pretty hilarious. Really made me pine for something so simple.
Oh, and my AR is dead, long live my AR (and it will, all over this land). Parted it and sold much of it off within a day. That'll cover much of the cost of a new one which should be in existence in the next few months.

neat. I picked up 3 boxes if .357swagnum at wally world today to feed the TRR8, a Levergun was always my "assault weapon ban backup plan". Very 'merican, with good RoF.
You gonna have an SBR as your only AR? You'll be waiting some months for approval, goody.

Nah, I have most parts for the SBR sitting on the shelf, waiting....this'll be another ~16 incher. But yes, the world best not turn to hellfire and ruin in the next few months, please and thank you.

Nothing, it was running great, just wanted to switch things up - after getting my mits on a 11" Centurion rail for my SBR project, I had to have another for a 14.5 or a 16, and it just kinda grew from there
So out of goddam NOWHERE, the US Army decided this week to adopt the SIG P320 as the M17.
I'm a pretty big fan of the P320 and thought it was the only gun that actually met the requirements of the Modular Handgun System RFP. Still, I never thought that the army would ditch the M9, since it ain't like handguns get used a lot in the army anyhow.
Anyway, they did drop it, and the scuttlebutt is that the reason they did is the M17 will actually be cheaper than continuing to armor the existing M9's. There's a lot of reasons that this could be the case, but the big one is that the P320's "frame" looks like this:
And a Beretta 92's (M9) frame looks like this:
If either of those units becomes un-functional you have to, essentially, order a new "gun" from the manufacturer...but SIG's "fire control unit" is a lot less prone to wear...the frame (aka "grip module") slide, magazines, etc can all be ordered separately (which is maybe the reason for the IDIQ contract?) rather than buying a whole new unit because Lt. Shitheel bent his trying to open a beer with it.
Anyway, this is particularly good news for me, because the P320 was (is) on the shortlist for the "Family Pistol System" and this move by Uncle Sugar will ensure that the guns, parts, and accessories keep flowing.

Rex and I had a great convo on FB chat this morning about this, as I had read an article about it a few days ago and was curious his thoughts. Rex, if you ever decide to leave the IT world I am sure you could drum up a pretty lucrative career in arms dealing  One of these has definitely been added to my list as well

I need to choot one of these again - when I was shopping for my first pistol I narrowed down to & rented the P320, G19 and G17 and loved the 320 - very nearly bought it - but went G19. Shot one again recently and after ~1yr with the Glock I was all "woaaahh muzzle flip" - dat bore axis. Great sights and trigger though...I want another go.
It also gave us one of my favorite carnikcon reviews:

so in the "this is kind of cool" and "Rex continues to be pleasantly surprised" arena, peep this dope shit from Heckler und Koch:
Whoa momma, it's the Revenge of the XM8 and Rexy liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike.
Lemme 'splain.
Way back before the GWOT, Uncle Sam was (as he always is in times of peace) trying to figure out how to make the individual soldier more deadly. This makes a lot of sense if you think about it, as at the time most of our engagements were small scale fires like Mogadishu, and the more effective each Individual Warfighter is, the less butter and fewer boots you gotta buy. One time cost vs recurring.
So they developed this program called the "OICW": Objective Individual Combat Weapon
It's a computer controlled 25MM grenade launcher with a 5.56 modified H&K G36 on the bottom. The idea was that you could have an airburst grenade programmed to explode after traveling a certain distance, so you could coldify Bad Hombres hiding behind barriers. Then, if they were too close, you just waxed them with the short 5.56 rifle attached at the bottom.
Then, this whole system became modular, then failed because it didn't work all that well and was hilariously expensive. BUT, the modified g36 at the bottom began to be looked at as a replacement for the M16 and M4, because you gotta remember this is the early 2000's, and the M4 isn't the Greatest Weapon Known To Man at this point. It doesn't fold so it's hard to use in a vehicle, and it's finicky when the barrel gets shorter than 12 inches and the magazines suck donkey tail.
So HK takes this modified G36 and makes some improvements and calls it the XM8:
Lots of modularity, lots of polymer, completely ambidextrous controls, integrated weapons sight, (with laser ranging! Thanks OICW program!) increased reliability, a Safe-1-3-FULLTILTBOOGY fire control group and a fancy new polymer magazine with a consistent curve that made feeding problems not problems. It was a really good rifle. It also cost what a really good rifle cost, and we had them dang ole WMD's from Saddam to deal with and no time for new toys! It languished, and what's worse, HundK was like "ok US Military, fool me once, shame on me, fool me like 30 fucking times and fuck you guys, seriously," and stopped submitting stuff for military trials.
Fast forward a few years and Magpul (pbut) creates this concept called the 'Masada' in an attempt to address what they saw as the shortcomings of the XM8:
If you've played any video game in the last 5 years, you know this rifle as the ACR. I owned one. It was pretty cool. But when Bushmaster bought the rights to produce the Masada, they screwed up a couple of key things and the rifle didn't really get the traction it should have.
Fast forward another couple of years and there's a huge scandal involving the Bundeswehr (the german army) and HK's G36. Namely, the G36 is a combat rifle NOT a light machine gun and when you treat it like a light machine gun trying to kill two or three dudes holed up in a hill-over-yonder in A-Stan, a design flaw rears it's ugly head and your sight-to-where-the-bullets-go relationship goes all to hell. German Army says "we're getting a new rifle!" and shit, they can afford it. France decides to get a new rifle too, because the FAMAS is a hot pile of garbage, and they adopt the HK416, which is just an M4 with the G36's gas system. But the German army doesn't want the 416, because it doesn't do well in the cold, and if they have to go to war with Russia ever again they want a rifle that works in the winter. (See also: Every war Russia's ever been in ever.)
So.
Here we are.
The HK433:
![[Image: HK433_lead-720x414.jpg]](http://www.gunsandtech.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/HK433_lead-720x414.jpg)
compared to the ACR:
It's very exciting because I thought both the G36 AND the ACR were very solid, usable designs that I was a big fan of. Each had their faults (the G36 used TOO much polymer while the ACR was overly heavy) but this looks like to potentially address the faults of both AND, HK claims, for a lower price.
Combine that with HK building a brandy shiney new weapons factory here in American (presumably to assist in the making great again thereof) and we might actually see this motherfucker on shelves, and I've never seen an HK product that wasn't quality. I've seen plenty I didn't like, but they were all quite well made.
Sorry for the wall of text, I just really like cool new design things, and this came out of NOWHERE. No rumors, no rumblings, just HK going "Hey I know we sell the 416 like gangbusters but here's this new rifle that fixes everything everyone hates about the G36, hope you like it."
I predict potential adoption of this rifle by the UK within 5 years.

What he said.
I'm about to test the customer service of Viridian. My green laser / flashlight / strobe combo I've had mounted on my XDM eats through the expensive batteries like a champion. On or off it doesn't matter...it's done it for a long time too I'm just now getting around to addressing it. So far I called their CS line and it routed me to a voicemail box which doesn't give me a lot of hope.
Edit: And that was easy. Got a human on the phone, no questions asked they are sending me a shipping label to send it back for a chipset upgrade. CS rep said with the upgrade the CR2 battery should last 6-12 months instead of like the 2 weeks I was experiencing. They have a 7 year warranty on these apparently but I have no proof of purchase because it's been forever, they gave 0 f's and said send it back.

My father-in-law gifted me the Mauser his dad brought back from WWII. I have no idea what the story of the gun was, other than we're pretty sure he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and this came back with him. I met him a handful of times; the last time being before my wife and I backpacked France and Belgium when we went to an F1 race at Spa. I tried asking him a bunch of questions about his time in the war, but he didn't seem too keen on talking about it. The one thing I do remember is he said he didn't like Europe very much, but that was probably because he had to get there on a ship and he had Nazis shooting at him when he got there. He was sure we'd "have a better time" than he did.
My FIL had it inspected by a gunsmith in Vermont and it's supposed to be in good working order. It's stamped 79, so we think it's 7.9 mm, but I'll probably take it to a local shop to give it a once over before I put a round through it. I know pretty much nothing about arms like these, so it wouldn't hurt to have someone talk me through it.

The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
Wow that is a really cool piece and it looks like it's in impeccable condition. That is gonna be so much fun when you fire it. My grandfather also was in the Battle of the Bulge as a tank commander and only ever opened up about a few stories before he died. He never could talk about the rest, we knew about his Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster but didn't know about his Silver Star until his funeral at Arlington National. He did bring back a ton of relics (Nazi snow helmets, officers daggers, etc) but no firearms that I know of or our side of the family ever saw.
