its definitely a lot. but, i'd look at it instead as a "mini Z06" rather than a swapped miata. everything works, its brand new, and there's nothing you can buy with that speed and reliability that weighs anywhere close to 2600lbs for the money in ragtop form. for the cars it can compete with in performance, i don't think anything new is going to touch it for 70.

As others said you're not really buying a "$70k Miata", but a 520hp 2600lb RWD roadster with a Mazda badge attached. All new & different subsystems in every part of the car, nothing else like it, configuration or performance wise, on the market for the price. They've built a few dozen of these (NA/B/C) and IIRC they've sold like ~250 kits to date for home builders (so not $70k FM-built, but I've run the numbers and it's still $$$) so the market is there.

Except you can drive this across the country without rattling or burning yourself to death as they note in the vid, and it has AC, stereo, bluetooth, a real top, blablabla. Same but different. Would I rather have a FFR Cobra for same/less? Possibly*. But I wouldn't dream I could live with it the same way I could the FM car.

Yeah I've never been a big Miata guy but this thing is cool and worth the money. You're going to tie up that much in any project car that fast and it's probably not going to be nearly as livable (ie uncomfortable, big turbo laggy, always breaking more stuff, etc)

I'll be in the FM camp. My friend's dad built a factory 5 cobra for years in his garage. I always thought it was so cool until it was done. Impossible to get in and out of. Fiberglass everywhere. Literally no interior besides seats a steering wheel and a shifter. Loud as hell and fast, but those were the only redeeming qualities.

Right. I wouldn't hate on anyone for having one and I'd certainly like to take it for a spin... I dunno, I just don't get it. I guess it's a poor man's do-everything-but-still-only-room-for-two supercar, for people that like sleepers? :dunno: Too comfy and too unproven for a track car, too small for a useful DD, but man, stoplight racing ricers, here I come!

I just love sleepers. If I had a bottomless wallet I'd go a step further and choke down that LS motor with the most restrictive exhaust possible for the ultimate stealth experience (could always run a cutout for when you need braps). A stock minivan could pass me at 120MPH like I was standing still too. And the "reason" it's so fast would be the same, driver is a fool. I mean, the guy said they haven't even high speed tested the FM Miata. Have fun with that!
