You are both right and wrong, by my estimation. yes, the mustangs with the China transmissions (see what I did there) and the oil-starved 'vettes are stupid. It is also outrageously stupid that the oil pump nut isn't torqued properly on the "holy shit God's Own Six Cylinder" is fucking stupid. I shouldn't have to drop my goddam oil pan to repair an obvious defect.
I shouldn't have to do this on a WRX either, to prevent the oil pickup from cracking. Or get a tune on the 2.5L to keep the pistons from eating themselves. I shouldn't have to reinforce the subframe on an M3, I shouldn't have to replace the goddam timing chain tensioners on the back of the fucking motor in an S4. Or install a catch can on every fucking GDI engine ever.
The factory should stop being such fuckheads and do it for us. It isn't unique to BMW, but it is a bit embodied by BMW.
Of course, thinking back, the only problem anyone ever seems to have with their MkIV's is "Well I make too much goddam horsepower and now spend too much money on tires." So there's that.

Lots of cars have an achilles heel. I've even read that some have 2.0L or less of displacement.

You know, I used to not care too much. If you want 10 degrees negative camber and ugly wheels with stretched tires, sure.
Now that I have a Miata again and I'm meeting other Miata people, they are all ricers. I go to a car meet on Tuesday nights and it's just Subaru people with their Hello Kitty bullshit hanging off their mirrors, cars with 20+ stickers on the windows, or a Miata slammed with cambered out wheels and stickers all over it, but they don't have the money to fix their blown head gasket because they spent it on race land coilovers for mad stance points. When you talk to them, all they want to talk about is their plans to turbo their car, tune it, lower it, etc. It's exhausting. Why is this appealing to people? Why the hell do you want to scrape on every bump in the road in an AUTOMATIC Miata? (yes, someone has an auto Miata with a blown head gasket that they drove to multiple meets.) I think over half of the Miatas I run into nowadays are modded to the point where they handle worse than they did before, and I feel like it's shifting more and more into that direction every day. Everyone cares too much about how their car looks and not about the other 99% of their vehicle. These people will pop their hoods so you can see their painted valve covers and silicone hoses, but they can't talk to you about anything deeper than that because they don't actually know anything. Of course, they know EVERY type and model of wheel out there, but they don't even know what kind of package their Miata is, or how to change their own brake pads.
Maybe I'm just now noticing this, or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places, but I'm disappointed by how few "real" car people there are out there without having to go to the track.
Ricers have been around forever and even a lot of us here (myself included) have fallen prey to the rice disease at some point. With that said I would imagine a lot of it has to do with the crowd you're connecting with and your area. When we go to cars and coffee here the number of stancebros is quite low (other than among the euro-tards). Most of the cars we see are awesome and really cleanly done.

People who don't use cruise control on the interstate. Driving from Charleston SC to my house today I bet I encountered at least 15 vehicles who obviously weren't using it. They'd pass me, then slow down about 5 miles later and I'd pass them back. Or I'd get halfway past them and they'd speed up. Drives me nuts.
Also, as I posted in my truck thread, cruise controls that can't maintain a regular speed. The only vehicles I've had in the last 5 years that could always maintain their exact cruise speeds were my Corvettes. All the others, if I set them at 76mph would drop to about 71 before they would downshift, then accelerate to 78 or 79 before slowing back down to 76. Aggravates me to no end. If I set it at 76, I want to go 76 the whole time damnit!

My girlfriend's family's Q7 had the most amazing cruise control. It would hold the mph exactly. maybe varying one mph at most, or maybe the digital speedometer was just lying to give the illusion it was.
