There's a good, long thread about catch cans on the twins forum and we have even attracted the attention of a DI motor engineer whose job it is to examine blowby and coking in DI engines from all makes. Out of curiosity I unscrewed my Elite E2 can this afternoon and took a look. Keep in mind I installed this at the 500 mile mark and I am at 890 miles on the clock (less than 400 miles):

That is about 1/4-1/2 oz of oil that 100% would have ended up in my intake manifold without this can. That is basically after only 1 full tank of gas and I rarely stomp on the gas. In fact I don't think I have even hit redline yet in this truck. Makes me wish I had pulled the trigger on the catch can before I bought my truck and had it ready.

The flash / direct sunlight makes the oil look a little milky (like there was moisture) but it's pretty much pitch black as you can see in the third pic. So I guess it's good that I am not seeing any moisture in my setup.

So do these engines not have an oil separator from factory or is this a different kind of thing?

Dunno how different but most DI motors operate with similar issues. Some of the more performance oriented cars (I heard Vipers, Hellcats, maybe some Corvettes now, Ferrari's, etc.) all have some kind of factory catch can system. Most vehicles with these engines though, the manufacturers basically just assume that they will be doing some kind of media blasting of the intake manifold in the future and a lot of them are dropping their warranties to fewer miles. There are also apparent class action lawsuits in the works, but at the end of the day we can basically blame CAFE for forcing mfgs to make the changes to DI. Dodge I think is the only holdout and they have been paying millions in fines because of it...and now apparently they are migrating to DI in 2017.

For most vehicles, aftermarket is the only fix to prevent carbon / coking buildup on the valves that eventually leads to at best worse power / lower fuel mileage and at worst bent valves and busted motors. Lots of good info in this thread here too if you're bored and want to read up (GDI is the industry expert): http://coloradofans.com/forums/185-2nd- ... h-can.html

Finally got a chance to try this setup out at night (I really don't drive this truck enough) and will say that these are some of the tops mods I have done to any vehicle, ever. That's a bold statement for me when you look at my past. The EAS setup with Morimoto bulbs and fogs is crisp, super clear and crazy bright. My friend who was riding with me even commented on it and said the setup is sick...he wants to snag the fogs for his Sierra when he picks one up. It is such a night and day difference (no pun intended). I just adjusted the headlights downward a little bit as I got a flash from a passerby on the way home, but with where the foglights cut off I don't need to make any adjustments to those at all!

Still on the docket is a tonneau, a tune, a leveling kit and powdercoated wheels at some point. And that subwoofer if I get a mind to grab one

Ha yeah it's fun making a vehicle your own! Get after it

Unfortunately I maybe spoke too soon. Fogs worked great on the way to the grocery store tonight to pick up some stuff and dial in my cutoff height, but then they won't fire back up at all now no matter how I cycle the lights / turn on the fog switch. Should be fun troubleshooting :/

Do they run on their own fuse?

They do, and I checked it and it blew. Interesting that there would be a short in a plug and play system. I'll call TRS in the morning and see if this is a common thing

Too many Amps for the fuse. Probably just need another 5 Amps and you should be good or something faulty in the bulbs.

Edit: TRS customer service is wonderful so I'm sure they'll get it fixed quickly.

Chatted with TRS this morning, they said to pop in a new fuse and test each bulb to see. They have not seen any fuse blows or shorts on these yet. I took back the driver's side fender lining last night and everything looked fine with the stock harness / clip and the housing wiring, so I'm going to do the same on the passenger side today and see what's up. TRS recommended testing each housing to see, so I will do that and hopefully this was just a fluke Smile

So after some testing the passenger side Morimoto housing was causing the fuse to blow every time I plugged it in. TRS was great and they are sending me a replacement under warranty. They had not seen one of these yet have issues so they were just as puzzled as I was. The OEM fogs worked fine when I plugged them in. Hopefully replacing that one fixes the issue, otherwise I'll probably just revert back to stock and do some kind of LED bulb replacement in the stock housings. That's not ideal because it won't have the nice cutoff (higher chance of blinding people) but it makes such a huge difference having a better light source coming from the fogs.

New fog light did the trick, oem harnesses checked out. Glorious glorious light again. The setup got a great workout on the trip up to VA tonight as it misted and rained the entire way. It's amazing to see what a good light setup looks like next to a poor one like a lot of passerby had. I was basically lighting the road for others. A+ would recommend.

+1 to this. Driving our CX-5 at night is amazing. We opted for the tech package with articulating LED head lights and LED fogs and it is like driving in daylight at night.

Light setup was really clutch on the dark, rainy drive to VA on Thursday night. I need to do a little right-to-left adjustment I think of the driver's side light but other than that I have the height dialed in perfect so as to not blind oncomers. The "DRL is the low beam" thing is still annoying but I've just made it a habit of twisting the light knob off every time I get in the vehicle during the day. I wish there was a pull-the-fuse solution but there's not so that's fine.

Got the same mileage there and back (with some added weight of boxes / stuff) of about 22.5mpg which is super solid for a truck this size and considering I averaged 70+ on I77/81. My only significant complaint is that after about 2 hours of driving on the way down my tailbone really started to hurt, like it does when I get stuck on an older airplane with worn out seats. For some reason I didn't have the same issue on the way back but my lower back started to get a little tight. For around town the seats are very comfy but for longer trips I might pick up a padded cushion to sit on just to save my ass (literally).

That tonneau would have been really nice to cover all of the stuff we hauled back. We ran through a very brief rainstorm on the outskirts of Charlotte but an 8x10 tarp and bungie cords still kept everything dry since I didn't have one yet!

I saw a Canyon equipped like yours yesterday, but in a kind of crimson-y red. Looked really really good.

Glad the lights are working out for you! I may eventually try to do something with the Ford...

Nice, it is worth the investment. I would definitely recommend going to The Retrofit Source...seriously good customer service and troubleshooting when things weren't working. It looks like Morimoto makes the same LED housings for your truck...just saying.... https://www.theretrofitsource.com/compl ... zCpXoQrLX4

Nothing much to report here other than I have put less than 3000 miles on it so haven't even hit the first oil change. The first two are free and I was told by the manual and service advisors to wait until the MID tells me it's ready for the first oil change. I just don't like the idea of factory oil sitting in the motor for that many miles, so I may get in there early with some Pennzoil Platinum I bought to get some good blood in it. I've emptied the catch can twice since installation and emptied over 2oz of oil that would have otherwise ended up in my intake....definitely a worthwhile investment for these engines.

I still really love owning a truck as a "daily". My buddy just leased a '16 Sierra Denali and that thing is so sweet...but man it is BIG. I helped him rearrange some stuff in his large L-shaped garage just to get it to fit in there length wise...width wise it feels tight with two cars in there. My truck really is the perfect size, it parks like a car and it fits in my garage. I am REALLY curious to see what happens to this mid-size segment once Ford releases the new Ranger. GM re-fired the segment with the Colorado / Canyon and having more competition is definitely a good thing!

So yeah, oil change and apparently there is a possible recall on the tow hitches. Some of the twins with the tow package apparently only got a 3,000lb hitch installed from the factory by accident instead of the 7,000lb...seems like a pretty big mistake. I will find out if mine is correct or not! My favorite tuner shop got purchased by a local truck modifying group so I am a bit bummed about that, I still want to get the level kit done soon. The dealer actually offers a leveling kit so depending on price I may go that route. Weathertech mud flaps are up next and eventually I'm still in for the OEM Kicker sub and a custom tune I think.
