A lot of people are bitching about the second season, how its slow, and there is too much backstory, and why hasnt anyone died yet, when will it pick up the pace. ITS THE SECOND FUCKING EPISODE.
IT IS NOT A MICHAEL BAY FILM.
Im trying to figure out what more these people want.
Ya got a sex addicted dead guy with politcal power who was in to Animal dress up and has brass dicks all over his sex apartment
A criminal boss trying to go legit and is leaning towards his old ways of breaking knee caps and murder to get what he wants
An alcoholic Detective who supposedly beat his wifes rapist to death and is caring for the Son of his wifes rapist while now under the influence of previously mentioned criminal boss
A freaky female Cop who likes knives and weird sex and whos dad is incharge of some weird religious cult that likely ties to the dead sex guy.
A CA Highway Patrol officer who cant get it up and is likely a closet homosexual pretending to be a homophobe with some crazy PTSD from his days with with military and Blackwater
Ya know how I know all that......Backstory, it makes the characters interesting. Not just Robots and explosions.
But I guess they got what they wanted in the last 90 seconds when someone gets double tapped by a guy in a bird mask with a shotgun.

/Rant Thank you! This is exactly what I have been saying to people complaining. The best way to explain it is that True Detective does a show the correct way unlike every other show out there. They use the beginning to build the characters and give you so much information on their backstory/history so that you can see what drives their decision making in the present time. An opposite strategy of this was seen in Lost - so much action right from the start. They constantly had to flashback (so much that it was confusing at times) to give the character backstory. It got so convoluted switching between the current and past (and future) it was difficult to really see character development.
Maybe we just enjoy shows where you have to actually think and put things together on your own. I enjoy learning about the character's history - it lets you peak into their mind and understand why they make decisions they do.

I would agree with you actually. What they are doing now is necessary and it's also how they did season 1. The difference to me is these characters are boring and there were a few things that seemed repetitive. Here is how I saw it.
Alcoholic, drunk driving, hard on family male lead actor, oh, looks just like Marty. I swear Collin Farrell drinks from the same damn flask they used in Season 1, but he's dead now so whatever, thank god.
Female cop, okay cool I actually like that. The sex part is exciting but the family part made me yawn and they used it to tie religion back in again, oh, like season 1.
The military cop is completely new and interesting but that's also the story line they seem to be giving the least attention.
Vince Vaughns character lol. Okay well first things first, I have to get past the fact they are using Vince Vaughn. I just don't like him. I can't say I've ever liked any of his movies and I was glad to see his general tone is not comedic. I hate the way his voice gets all whiney and annoying when he's trying to drop a joke. I don't think he's playing the part particularly well thus far either. I don't like Matthew Mcconaughey either, but Rust was my favorite character and the role fit Mcconaughey. I don't think this fits Vince Vaughn but....it's only episode 2, I shall wait.
Now where I'm at is...Rex is right, i felt similar the start of season 1, but that was still interesting. The acting was better and so was the writing. I'm only keeping up with this Season because i'm riding on the awesomeness of Season 1 so i'll patiently wait. I also would have chosen a different cast, but again, I'm giving it a chance. Season 1 also gave you a taste of the mystery at hand while providing back story and character development with the flashbacks.
You make a very good point about the dude with the animal head though. This might be the main difference for me. I loved Criminal Minds because they always did weird shit. They had to hunt down the pathological serial killer by watching all his weird behavioral patterns and etc. Those criminals were always the most fucked up. Season 1 was very similar to that. The weirdness of it alone made me screw my face up and say "alright I guess I'll watch the next one and see cause that was weird as fuck". THE MYSTERY WAS EXCITING, I WANTED TO SOLVE IT TOO. Season 2 has a more CSI vibe. CSI was boring lol.
My perspective might also be a little different considering I rolled into Season 2 fifteen minutes after finishing season 1 lol

Shootout scene was on point. The rest was very meh. They need to spend a little more time putting the plot together cause i'm lost. They can also leave the background and personal life out of it now cause its just turning into a Lifetime show.
I actually forgot tonight episode was on. I remembered when Jon made a status about it on Fb lol. I could skip next weeks episode, but I'll watch since expecting it to get good at some point.

Holy balls. That was an intense few minutes. I don't think something like that would have ever been able to make regular TV. I agree - last night's episode was drawn out a little too much, but the payoff was nice. Although I don't agree that they need to dump the backstory/personal life. It helps us understand why the character's make the decisions they do. I don't need run and gun for an hour straight to enjoy a show though.
Interesting to see the CHP officer's back story coming out (literally).

Favorite part was the drunk dirty old partner taking one to the face.
And when Woodrugh just holsters his gun at the end like everything is fine, while Ani and Ray are freaking out.
i laughed when Paul opened the glovebox to a drug buffet and Ray was just like "pick a cure"
also, in the same way the cinematographers managed to make Louisiana look creepy as shit last season, they've managed to make the Los Angeles valley look more depressing than Detroit this time around

That was an awesome scene, really gripping/well done. The episode kind of dragged up to that point (good as it was) - I'm hoping from here on things are a bit more focused on the central plot. We've already gotten more character backstory on everyone than we did over the whole of season 1. I do like the moves Vince Vaughn's character is making - his guys were super quick on the draw before he pulled that dudes teeth out

Maaan I was sad to see him go. I had this feeling that he was actually going to turn out to be the best detective on the team - like Ray said, he himself was never really Columbo...I bet that guy actually was.
Is anyone else watching Humans on AMC? Pretty good so far, I was in for William Hurt initially but I'm liking the whole production.
Goodspeed Wrote:I do like the moves Vince Vaughn's character is making - his guys were super quick on the draw before he pulled that dudes teeth out  He really didn't waste any time going back to "the life". That scene was so intense. I did not expect him to throw hands like that, let alone go right for the teeth.

Well the last two episodes (especially last night's) were a welcome turn. I just didn't know wtf was going on for a while, but they brought it pretty well back on track. Sucks what happened to Woodrugh, but I can't wait to see what Frank and the gang do next.

Meh. Can't say anything that hasn't already been said (correctly) here:
http://www.vox.com/2015/8/10/9125723/tru...p-season-2
Agreed. The action helped me be entertainment but I didn't understand who was who and why or which ep they were in previously so I was lost on story and why people were dying but it was fun to watch them die. I just didn't understand.
It also annoyed me that pretty much what I had been asking for all season happened in franks last moments. That's the way I would have preferred to learn their back stories. Not TNT style like they did all season but somehow incorporated into the action.
Also if they wanted me to feel bad about rays email not going through then they shouldn't have driven him to the middle of bumfuck cause no one gets signal in bumfuck, it was obvious. It probably would have also been a good idea if tubby ginger actually had some God damn expression at some point through the whole damn show.
Anyway, I could pick on more things but eh.

There was only one way it could have ended for Frank and Ray, but come on that was a shitty way to do it. Terrible season all together with maybe 1 or 2 decent episodes. I hope that they are able to bring in new writers should they get another season. I didn't want a happy ending. I wanted Frank to go out like a boss - not bleeding out in the desert. Ray's suicide by cop (rogue hit squad?) was weak too.

I don't know if there has been enough precedent set to make that statement though. In S1, yeah, they didn't get *all* the bad guys, but Rust came out happier in the end realizing he wanted to live. I wasn't pissed about what happened to Frank and Ray in a happy vs. sad ending way, rather as Polen said they screwed up each character's ending in just bizarre ways. The whole desert mirage thing was lame, and the fact that Frank got bumped off by some minor characters after a drug dealing squabble that we cared not at all about...weak. And Ray, well, he made some dumb final moves that weren't terribly believable, and clipped wing bad-cop-guy somehow got a whole hit squad together of *more* dirty (diamond-related?) cops? Whatever.
as soon as Ray ducked off the highway to see his kid i knew it was over.
also, thanks again Goodspeed, i couldn't watch any scene with Rachel McAdams anymore without counting sniffles

You weren't paying attention. The hit squad was woodrough's old PMC buddies, who now exclusively work for Catalist. YOU forgot about the Mexicans because frank forgot about the mexicans. (Or rather, he screwed both the Armenians and the Mexicans, thought he could get away with it, and paid the price for it.) That was the point. Frank and Ray both made (very human) mistakes, and paid the ultimate price for it...i.e. what this whole series is about. In S1, I'm not sure Rust came out happier at all...more like, he realized that it's only him (and people like him) who stand between the world and the darkness. In S1, they didn't get all the bad guys and they basically lost, despite having all of the ducks lined up, doing everything in their power. In S2...they didn't get all the bad guys and they basically lost, despite having all the ducks lined up, and doing everything in their power. It's bleak, that's the point.
I mean don't get me wrong, S2 isnt' as good as S1, I was not nearly as compelled to know "WTF IS GOING ON" in S2, but I was also more able to track what was happening in S2 than S1.
