HALP HALP!

#1. I need a backup camera for the Tundra. Not for every day stuff, but I’m trailer hunting right now and I’m pretty sure as tight as the cleared area (not I don’t want to cut down a billion trees) is on the property, it will be useful. Yes I could spend a TON of cash and get Toyota to retro fit the factory option but that’s well over $1500. its also dark where we live… anyone used the night vision back up stuff?

#2. We use our phones to stream music in the car, I’ve been tempted by Apple CarPlay because we are both Iphone users and I don’t really see that changing (but apple might hose me on a radio one day and make me bitter)

#3. I’ll take something in color, high rez, etc. because I love the truck and it deserves something better than the crap Toyota gave it. Sound quality should be pretty good too since I like to jam out.

#4. hands free calling. I enjoy driving the truck so much I don’t actually pick up the phone when I’m driving. That’s good… but sometimes I should answer when the wife calls… or one of my employees : (

CarPlay = seriously over-rated, I don't think I've used that feature on my head unit more than 2-3 times. Jake can chime in as well since we have the same on.

It's not that nice or big. It's also an extremely rare option. It's also cheaper to go aftermarket

I think even Jake who loves anything thats shiny and associated with apple says car play isn't there yet.

Kaan, Idk if people can chime in on the more expensive versions but as far as the cameras go, I've always been satisfied with the $25 or so cameras off ebay. My current one has ir night vision (think they all do at this point) and a grid layout but I never actually use it while backing so I never actually noted how far away each line of the grid actually is.


I can take pics of it if you like. My display is some old cheap Jensen double din. Well cheap compared to some but the most expensive Jensen back then and probably ever lol

Yeah, don't spend a lot on the camera itself. All of the money is spent on the head unit. Sometimes I regret not buying a cheap camera when I put in my HU.

So Navin and I have the same Pioneer NEX-5000 unit. I found mine on refurb at Sonic Electronix for roughly half price. I really dig it - it's fast, has a good interface, good sound quality, and the mapping/directions are good enough that I'll use them vs. my iPhone most of the time (same quality of directions but easier to look at in the dash vs. phone-in-cupholder).

The NEX series have CarPlay and I think the more expensive versions also support Android Auto. It's cool and all, but don't think you'll use it all the time. It's easier to just start the truck and have the Pioneer UI come up versus plugging your phone in, unlocking, dealing with Apple Maps, etc etc. I have used CarPlay for a total of maybe 25 minutes since January.

I have a no-name backup camera that was like $16 on Amazon. It works, that's all. Has IR and shit and I guess that helps? It's attached with the two top license plate bolts and looks only slighly tacky that way.

Also, if you're going to spend the money to get this new-and-pimpy setup... get a unit with ****ing navigation. Nothing screams "I cheaped out!" more than a nice double-DIN screen with all the features and no navi.

Do the aftermarket ones have better nav than what OEMs are putting in? I LOVE the visual display of the maps in CUE - it's spot on, easy to use, etc. The biggest problem with it is if you are moving at all, you have to enter everything with your voice, and that works about as good as something from 1985. Frustrating as shit that it doesnt have a "passenger" override or something.

+1 on going with nav and +1 on the frustration of not being able to enter addresses while moving. My last few cars have been that way and I was super happy when our Acura let's you use your nav while moving like my old one used to

I grounded the parking brake wire on my Pioneer unit, and also figured out where to get in to the "secret" test/setup menu, which allowed me to disable the requirement that the car be stopped before you can enter information. Very easy to do (Pioneer units have a huge following and good forum for more info) and now I or a front seat passenger can muck with the navi while moving.

Pioneer uses Navteq mapping, which is the same as a lot of OEMs. Somehow BMW uses Navteq with their iDrive and my rendition of it is worlds better at actually getting me places than my 128's iDrive ever was. Kenwood is the only company to use Garmin maps but they have terrible UI's, to me. The Pioneer unit has been good at knowing where POI's are if I want to find directions to a bar or store or something.

How does the GPS antenna on those aftermarket units work? Do you have to run something to the outside of your car or is it self-contained?

typically have to run an external gps antenna about the size of an XM antenna.

SO... I don't have the JBL system with the 5th speaker in the Tundra and its pretty common for Tundra owners to mount the GPS antenna under the 5th speaker cover on the dash. like most GPS antenna, it only has to be able to see the sky.

Yeah mine's just getting mounted in the center of my dash close to the window.

Mine's off in the corner of the dash, tucked up by the windshield. It's about a 1x1" square and you don't notice it unless I tell you to look for it.
