Yep. My family has a habit of throwing huge fucking parties for this sort of thing too. It's gonna freak the shit out of her family.

A good photographer was the most expensive part of our wedding. It was worth it I guess because we have some really good engagement and wedding pictures that will help those memories last forever. That is one thing you don't really want to cheap out on, unless you have a friend who is willing to do it cheap and is good at it. Ours were friends, they gave us a good discount but it was still a lot of money

Joey, sent you a PM for further advice Smile

I will keep you and your fiance-to-be in our prayers. Regardless of your theological orientation, you need the support from all of your friends and famly when you are going through the next year or two and about to take that huge step. I am pretty blessed to be able to help lead a church body that is Biblical while not being wholly judgmental but unfortunately being a part of the "community" I do witness a lot of that nonsense that you are going through with her parents. Kill them with kindness dude that is my best advice....you are going to want to have your in-laws be a positive part of your lives especially when you start to have children.

Thanks man. Killing them with kindness has been my only approach and I've made inches (INCHES!) of headway already. I'm not going anywhere so at some point they're gonna have to roll over and accept it.

But in all seriousness, it is extremely unlikely that we will have our own children for a variety of reasons. I could see possibly adopting, but much, much later in life.

Yeah I was pretty stoked when I read about those. They were new and relatively obscure when I was shopping for rings and I incorrectly assumed that being out of the grasp of the debeers cartel meant they would be reasonably priced. NOPENOPENOPE. They were MORE expensive, not just because they are 100% flawless in every way, not just because angelina jolie wears them "conflict free not a blood diamond no babies died mining this stone!!!!", but because the same reason Lee's brodawg member of the secret illuminati order of knights templar: diamond division didnt get him the deal of the century: prices are set by the market and the market says little chips of compressed carbon are worth crazy money.
Instead, I asked my to-be wife if she would be ok with a moissanite ring. She said ok its just a stone but of course I knew she still wanted a real rock.
So I bought her a $texas diamond anyway, because what Justin said is true. I was in my late 20s, making good money and already had bought a house. So I wanted her to be happy. debeers won and Im ok with that.

Ahhh all these armchair quarterbacks who are self admitted jewelry haters giving out jewelry advice.

Contrary to what these guys are saying (which is true much of the time as I mentioned earlier) even price fixed, "cartel-controlled" products can be purchased below wholesale prices. If you need me to explain to you how a diamond buyer would do that, anyone can feel free to send me a PM.

You guys can feel free to keep buying stones on the Amazon of diamond sites and feel like you are kings of the market though, just make sure you keep waving those inflated appraisals around like you just don't care. If your wives ever lose their rings God forbid just remember that the insurance company is going to use the lowest replacement value possible which is likely going to be that BN price you paid. If you think you are going to get an actual check for $10-15k more than what the markets bears for your ring with an inflated retail appraisal then 9 times out of 10 you are going to need to think again. I would also consider evaluating your insurance premium at that point because you are likely paying on an inflated number.

That's the end of my soap box about rings, let's not scare the younger guys off of having to go through what we all went through!! I will say that it is a good feeling to see your wife's face over and over again when completely random strangers stop her every other day to tell her how stunning her ring is and that "he did a good job!!" (we had another one at dinner three nights ago). So don't feel like your money is completely wasted or that nobody will know the hard work you put in to put that thing on your wife's finger

Ummm... yeah... that's how insurance works.

No one thinks they're kings of the market. I think our point was quite the opposite, there are no kings. Not BN, not your super-secret hookup, no one.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

the money i could make doing invitations/graphic crap for weddings. it could be all i do and i'd live pretty well.

but you know what? i'd rather put out a campfire with my face than deal with bridezilla and her insufferable "must be perfect for my little princess" pill popping mother. not even once.

you're not! something that made a big difference for me...i bought from a mom 'n pop jeweler who took a lot of time with me. the whole process went from overwhelming and frustrating to at least being semi enjoyable. it was still an anxious moment putting that much cash down but i felt like i at least wasn't getting dragged over the coals.

if anyone's in the Atlanta area i can put you in touch with them. the owners are gemologists and actually do their own prospecting. they own the rights (or whatever it is you get that lets you call a gem "yours") to a REALLY cool stone thats only been found in one place in GA.

Was bored on a business trip in Dallas on my birthday so I tried on one of my dream watches, which was a big mistake because I didn't want to take it off. Dealer had it priced at $13k. Which is absolutely absurd I would never spend that much money on a watch. But still strong with the want  The face actually wore smaller than I like and it kind of reaffirmed for me that I might lean more toward an Omega for the next big career milestone (ie retirement). Better movement, more reliable, still beautiful.
What I tried on:

Ironically one of my first cousin's husband or something, I don't know my family is not close, had one on at my grandfather's funeral last year. I commented on it at the reception at the Chevy Chase Club of which they are all long time members and he said he got it as a birthday gift and didn't even know what it was. Ah the joys of your aristocratic extended family.

Got some cool lume shots from my new travel companion and sold off my old one for basically what I paid for it 3 years later!

^ That Rolex costs TWO E36 M3's?! Holy shit.

I'm firmly in the "don't understand expensive watches" camp. A few hundred, sure. Beyond that, I don't understand the appeal. Probably because I don't have "fuck you money" to blow on one.
