yeah the 2015 is 1.5" wider than the S197 but its lower and more content heavy, so i wouldn't be surprised if its sitting at 3700+ pounds.
which is a freaking travesty, but whatever, 90% of buyers just want it to look cool and get them to the office faster.

Think the problem regarding the wheel is the high shoulder line which puts the windows really far from the wheels.....for safety!

The new NISMO 370z looks way way better than the outgoing model. I'm not sure about all the red accents, but they could easily be covered up.

Just about every model car that has been in uninterrupted production for the last 20 years (let alone 50) has seen an increase in curb weight due to additional safety equipment, greater presence of power accessories, larger wheel/tire/brake combos, bigger engines, more complicated OBD systems, etc. The Mustang is undoubtedly heavier than it was back in '64, the Foxbody 80's/90's or even the New Edge 2000's...but it still epitomizes the long hood/short deck, 2-door, RWD, V8 powered, 4-seat, pony car with a modest curb weight when compared to other performance cars in its segment. The Camaro is heavy compared to Fords offering. The Challenger is a four door land yacht that's had two of its doors lopped off.
As for comparing the overall dimensions of the S550 and S197: They may be almost the same size but the S550 wears a tailored suit, the S197 wears one from JCPenney off the rack .

thing is, those aren't icons like the mustang - those either were, or are, very quirky niche vehicles that are trying to survive in a very crowded market. Subaru realizes it can't build products like turbocharged legacy-caminos and be competitve in the US, so they're Toyota'ing everything to survive. Lotus, like Porsche needs a diverse product line to supplement their halo car, so they have to go down the "get big add content" path with new offerings. it totally sucks, and i wish they'd all stop getting so damn fat, too.
its worth mentioning i think Lotus is at the very bottom of the list of manufacturers with a bulk problem though

yes i know. that's why i like them. in fact i've become quite a mustang fanboi lately...i'd do unwholesome things for an 08 highland green Bullitt, or a comp orange termi.
fiveoh2go Wrote:The Camaro is heavy compared to Fords offering. The Challenger is a four door land yacht that's had two of its doors lopped off.
no sir i don't wish to drive a dump truck
i don't mind that mustangs are heavy cars - that's part of the game if you want a car that's got a back seat and a big engine. but man, if its 2015, and you're starting out with a fresh, clean sheet design on your wildly popular sports coupe (which is about to go international for reals), i feel like its not unreasonable to expect that engineers would either be able to find ways to drop weight through better materials or through better packaging and leverage the scale of it all enough to not raise prices drastically. my whole beef is that i thought this time around, they'd be able to get it near 3500 lbs and really rock socks.
i also get that every car will gain weight through content, its inescapable. but for me though...performance numbers be damned, where do you draw the line with any vehicle that has sporting intentions? 2 tons? doesn't Ford have access to a titanic new supply of aluminum building processes thanks to the '15 F150? its only the most popular thing on 4 wheels in the history of space and time...why not bring that into the fold for the stang. its gotta be worth at least 200 pounds.
anyway. maybe my expectations are stupid. i love the stang for what it is, but i just thought this would be such a prime chance for Ford to hack a few pounds off and really bring the performance envelope to life.

Man...I really need to ride/drive one of these. The trip we did to the factory was amazing, but I was so bummed we didn't get any rides. Something about scratching the exoskeleton of customer cars, when they were obviously clearshielded.

Still ain't skeered doe.
<fanboi rant>
For so much whining about the curb weight of the Mustang, it still didn't stop it from being labeled 3rd best handling car for under 40k by Car and Driver, live rear axle and all.
It also didn't stop a V6 Mustang from turning a 3:12.5 lap in the Lightning Lap, even though it was "equipped with a 114-mph governor, which the car banged into for more than 15 seconds per lap." While you are thinking "So what? :dunno: still a pig" ... here are some other MM approved car's lap times to bench race against:
2013 Subaru BRZ - 3:18.6
2013 Ford Focus ST - 3:21.4
2008 BMW 135i - 3:13.7
2006 Volkswagen GTI MKV - 3:25.1
2010 Volkswagen GTI MKVI - 3:19.3
2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI - 3:13.8
If Ford could make the last one handle as well as it did while weighing 3700lbs (and while using a live rear axle), I am very interested in the lap times the new ones will put down, heavy or not.
I'll keep my fast oinker

Whats your point? An AMG SUV probably turns a faster lap than a BRZ.
Id rather drive a beat ass 1.6 miata than any mustang on track.
You are free to disagree, but dont get your feelings hurt when people lament - for good reason - bloated overweight sports coupes.
