Some PVC or a metal waterbottle, couple of fittings, and some steel wool. Done for like $25.

I don't have a DSM anymore, I'm going to try not to ghetto rig this one too much. The reason the BMS one (~$200) is so popular is because it's high flow and doesn't mess with the crankcase pressure like some of the other designs. I'm not sure how much of a difference it really makes, but the guy that makes the most popular turbo upgrades for these cars says don't use a catch can at all unless it is that high flow one.

Ok, BMS JB4 and dual cone intakes are in. This thing has way more than enough power now. I really don't think I'll be doing a whole lot more power wise. Definitely not this summer if I do.
Should be at ~350whp or ~400bhp now. I'm going to get it dynoed at the place in Elkton at some point this summer . Current mod list: BMS JB4 BMS DCI Active Autowerke charge pipe Active Autowerke BOV

Yeah you can probably drive it if you want. It's a very easy car to drive. Very unlike the evo at similar power levels. It was a pain to drive smoothly.

The car has a rough idle on cold starts now. Spark plugs are known to die as soon as you tune them if they are already on the old side (they're due at 45k regularly), so I've ordered a set of those for now. I'm at 39k so they're due shortly anyway.
It isn't missing enough yet to throw a code, but if the plugs don't fix it, I guess I'll wait for it to get bad enough to throw a code, then swap coils to see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't, that would most likely point toward a bad injector so I'll have to look into getting the cable to program those. Edit: On a side note, I'm really enjoying this car now with the extra power and the turbo noises. There's still a ton of stuff I want to do to this car, so I will likely end up keeping this thing for a long time. Maybe I can keep it long enough to grab one of the M2's when they get reasonable in price.

Mine has a random "misfire-ish" feeling on colder mornings. It's gone away since the weather got nicer, but I suspect it's on the original plugs (because "lifetime everything," says BMW) and I'm approaching 50k.

Yeah I think on your car they are technically due at 100k, but I would probably replace them before that. What are the recommended oil change intervals on your car? BMW says 15k for mine, but I'm sure as hell not letting the oil get that old on a turbo'd car.

I'm changing the oil at 50k and will probably subscribe to a 5k regimen just because it makes things easy to remember. The Focus ran synthetic as well and I think I did every 5 or 6k on that. My car sees a lot of short-distance driving with revs throughout the range... I figure subscribing to a more aggressive oil change interval can't be a bad thing. And changing every 5k or so means I change it mayyybe three times a year.

Changed out the spark plugs this weekend, still have the cold misfire. I'll have to check again to see if it is bad enough to throw codes yet and start from there.
It's only at idle. Seems to run fine otherwise.

Do those newfangled things have an idle control valve like the old cars? Maybe all that extra boost knocked a nice big chuck of sludge in there and it just needs to be cleaned out. :dunno: Just spitballing.
The first summer I had my car if you let it sit for more than a day you'd have to whisper sweet nothings into her intake for a few minutes to convince her to idle again. Cleaning out the ICV seemed to resolve it. Now: 07 Porsche Cayman S | 18 VW Tiguan

I don't think they have an ICV. Probably going to run a bit of injector cleaner through it on the next fill up to see if that makes any difference. I can't really do a whole lot until it starts throwing codes because I don't know which/how many cylinders are misfiring.

Think your valves may need to be professionally cleaned?

I'm sure they're awful and they can cause rough idles but I don't think they are causing this problem in particular. I don't see why it would only be on cold starts if it was the valves being gunked up. I'm pretty sure I'm going to do it mysef when it comes time to clean them though. Just have to pull off the intake manifold and hit them with a media blaster while that particular valve is closed. Takes a bit of time since you do it one at a time then rotate the crank, but it's not particularly hard.

Check to make sure all your hoses where you changed your BOV are all good. That BMW technology is an alien compared to anything I've worked on or I would be more help. I mean these issues didn't happen until you put your mods on the car? I'd say mod related issue but no idea
