Growing up on a lake and now living by the coast, I've always told myself that I should get a boat one day. I'll have to keep waiting, but in the meantime why not dream? Anybody else into boating at all? Maybe there's a reason this topic has never been brough up here. Maybe create a "Boats That Get You Wet" thread? I'm assuming if anything, folks would be into old wooden Chris Crafts, or maybe some Donzis and Fountains. Maybe less pontoon boats.

Boat ownership is mad expensive. I've kept my *dreams to some supercharged Sea-Doo and be done with it.
If it floats, flies, or fucks you are better off renting. Or so I've heard.

I have been told that the best days of your life are the day when you buy a sweet boat and then the day that you sell it.
Living next to two lakes, you can do what I do which is to have friends who have boats
I am happy to bring beer and float them some gas money every time we all go out. My FB is riddled with pictures of all of us parking my buddy's boat on a sand bar / island in Lake Norman and chillin in the lake. I personally would not own one unless maybe I lived right on the lake.
The father of a girl I used to date was the CFO of Chris-Craft. We took one of the "company boats" out several times, IIRC it was only a 24 footer that was probably close to $100k. It was beautiful, got tons of looks on the lake. He wasn't super great at driving it though; one time we brought it in to dock to gas it up and he hit it REALLY hard on the edge of the dock. The attendant was like "dang bud that ding is going to set you back" and her father was like "no it's all good, the guys in the factory will just fix it up for free"

never had much interest in motorboats, but the wife and I did some sailing a few years ago which is fun and more of an actual skilled activity than just steering something on water.
if thats more your speed, there are boat clubs that are pretty cheap for the year and you get to reserve and take out their boats whenever you want. Also plenty of racing leagues and 'spec' boat series (not kidding ) and the club has the boats to race.

The other annoying thing about boats is that you have to pay to dock / store it somewhere and you have to have something to tow it with.

You pay ~$200 a year and then $10-$20 every time you take a boat out.
Well that answers that question. I guess this one is "dead in the water"...

Post again in 20 years when I'm retired and hopefully I live near some water and own a cigarette boat. I get the hots for those every so often

I worked at a marina on Smith Mountain Lake here in VA for about 12 summers. Developed quite the lust for cigarette boats. I rode in a 45' Sonic with 3 (yes, three) 525ci V8s. I wouldn't mind picking up a 10 year old Baja with a 454 in it for about $15k sometime a few years from now. Might have to wait a little longer for a $100k monster.

The only boat I've ever had any passing interest in, I guess I may have been enamored with it as a kid watching that series.

Hey, they animated it.
So we chatted about this before, but yeah, (former?) boat person here. Grew up spending summers at the Jersey shore before it was known as it is today, and will die knowing the best job I ever had was at a marina in Bay Head. We had, in order (no pictures of our actual boats - just similar models):
21' Wellcraft Coastal with a 200hp Yamaha.
26' Cruisers Rogue with some single Mercruiser.
19' Bayliner center console with a 120hp force - my first commuter vehicle (and moving violation!) and the kids' toy.
28' Baja Sport Fisherman center console with twin 225 Merc's. 70mph boat and to this day my favorite exhaust note.
Folks retired on Lake Anna and have your typical 21' Hurricane with like a 150hp 4stroke, along with some like 15' aluminum thing for fishing.
I could never get into the Cigarette/hot-rod thing, though I always loved the lines of a Fountain. NEVER understood the noise, the cockpit was the same size in a 45' boat as it was in a 25', and I dunno. Just didn't seem usable. With our Baja (like a Scarab Sport), you could seat 10 people comfortably, fish all day, pee standing up, lay down in the cuddy cabin when your bitch ass got seasick ( ) - all while still beating everyone else to the good fishin' holes.
I miss it, but have no idea if I'm going to go for a boat later in life. Cars interest me more at the moment and I don't particularly have the itch for it now. I've never done it, but...I can't think of many things less appealing than snailboating. And having worked at a marina...they were head and shoulders above any other boater in the asshole department - every single one was annoying.
Haven't kept up with it since going to college, so I don't know what's cool anymore. :dunno:

Boat/jetski and water fanatic here. I've been jetskiing solo since I was 8 and I'm now 25. I learned to jetski and drive a boat at smith mountain lake summer after summer until my aunt bought 2 houses/properties along the wicomico river (bout ~15 yrs ago). From NoVA where I live, it's about an hour and 15 mins south on 301 in southern MD. I basically grew up boat crazy up until high school and got more serious about cars since I was closer to the driving age.
As a kid I used to subscribe to powerboat magazine. You can imagine exactly what I'd like to own when I get older. (I'm already getting there lol) Anyway, I jetski and boat along the potomac usually beginning memorial weekend to labor day weekend at my aunts properties. Dj has been down with me before so he knows what I'm talking about. My aunt at one point used to have 4 jetski's (2 supercharged) and a couple 20' footers. Now she's narrowed it down to a 24' and 2 jetski's lol. She gave my brother and I one of her jetski's last summer for a dolla. and plans to buy another supercharged ski this summer most likely
My family has always been super tight knit so my brother (28) and I can go down to her house and use the toys whenever we'd like, we just have to give her some notice. She's usually out of the country half the year lol.
My dad bought a 40' sailboat a couple years ago and renovated the entire thing. He modded/upgraded/revamped the entire boat costing him double what the boat is actually worth :dunno: no idea, but its his $$. To tell you the truth, I've only been on it once. My mom and he go sailing almost every weekend between the spring and fall. He's close to retiring so that's why he bought it and wants to 'sail around the world' after he retires. we'll see lol.
Sorry if it sounds like I'm gloating. I just get really excited talking about boats/jetski's more than cars to be honest (almost my entire life has revolved around these things). Deep down inside I wish I grew up on the water instead of NoVA... but who wouldn't right?

Mitchell's Marina is the one I was referring to when I mentioned my ~12 summers as a petroleum transfer engineer (pumped gas while wearing board shorts all summer). My mom still iives 0.2 miles away, and probably always will.
I think the most insane boat I ever saw there was either (a). the catamaran (maybe a Skater hull, but not sure) with twin Viper engines. The outdrives were ridiculous. Or (b). the Fountain closed cockpit racing boat was in the annual poker run there a couple of summers back. One customer came in with a boat capable of 100mph and said the Fountain passed him like he was standing still. I believe they got spoken to about shooting a rooster tail over the bridge that goes over the lake too. I'm not sure they were invited back.

I wish I had some pictures to show you from the summers I spent there. I'll have to ask my aunt to dig up some pictures. I just remember riding in my aunts bfs scarab II and loving every second of it. That's basically where my love for powerboats started. Since I was pretty young, I don't remember a whole lot. Just waking up every morning seeing that water smooth as glass.
