Lazy would have been all the people who didn't do shit, unlike me who was out there clearing the driveway (and the sidewalk for my entire side of the street) and salting it so it wouldn't ice up overnight. So I used powered removal, bfd.

i still think purchasing a snow blower (checked prices around $300 and more) for the DC metro area is a little overkill. just break out the shovel - you can't have that much to go over and driveways are relatively easy (as long as they're paved...).

haha... yeah Mike, I think erosion and posible chemicals from construction are the main reasons. Out of all the things you could pour in a river to "polute it", I think bag 'o white, clean sand is like the lowest thing on the list. :lol:

When I was out in the field, the VA and Federal DEQ were just as strict about erosion / sediment control guidelines as OSHA was about jobsite safety. A builder / developer can face some HEFTY fines if they're not in compliance with engineer-approved erosion control plans.
I actually went through a DEQ inspection and it was not fun. Fortunately we had most of our ducks in a row, although the inspector was extremely picky about even small tears in the bottom of silt fence and such. Which is pretty hard to catch when you have thousands and thousands of feet of it all over your community =P

yea but they are doing it at construction sites to keep the foundation from washing away until they can build the proper reataining wall/plant trees, not to keep dirt out of the river.
