"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Polarizing filter + levels adjustments in photoshop is my bet.

Polarizing filters can have wonderful effects on cars, water, and sky.

HDR with serious saturation boost, but the light beams were in every shot and accentuated because of the polarizing filter. It does cut quite a bit of light so it as to be well lit to use (or use a tripod).

Nikon D50... with kit lens (Mike)... at 55mm zoom (Mike)...
linky
Just to show saturation... otherwise a crap pic.

Most of the photos on my site are from a D50 and you can get an idea of saturation, contrast, clarity, and edge definition from most. Finally, I'll leave you all with this. It's straight out of the camera from a few days ago. It'll show what a d50 can do without a tripod, photoshop, or good light. It's in RAW.
RAW

I've definitely found the limitations of my D50 but I don't regret buying it one bit as a starter D-SLR... oh.. and it prints to 24x30 beautifully!

on what? i said the digital rebel stock lens doesn't cut it as one's only lens. i have no clue about what the d50 comes with. you can take a decent picture with any lens, but you're limited to physically moving around if you don't have a range to work with.

D50 comes with primarily the exact same lens as the rebel basic kit lens... both are 18-55 and quite limited in overall performance in comparison to the upper grade lenses but I've seen some surprisingly beautiful shots out of them nonetheless (this is based off limited knowledge into digital photography, just lots of research recently). I agree that anybody serious into photography will have a wide range of lenses for different scenarios... or a more specific lens range for shots of choice (ex: studio, landscape, etc..)

From what I've been reading on some of the camera boards... its pretty 50/50 with people saying that kit lens isn't worthwhile to buy and others saying that for the price of the body + kit lens.. its worth picking up as a basic lens. So to each their own but personally I think there are a plethora of lenses that aren't that much more expensive but get much higher quality photos with better consistency. With that being said... the kit lens seems like a great way of learning the characteristics of the camera in manual settings.

Was that completely off-topic?

EDIT: Jack, your website is full of great shots. I'm extremely impressed with some of the landscapes, the wide range of subjects and your play on colors. Are these all these shot with the D50?

Thank you...now I know what I want to buy...now I just need money. Why can't I get enjoyment from simple, free hobbies like stamp collecting? Oh well.

Spoken like someone who never collected stamps. Smile

Hey guys, this is a really cool discussion, but can we move it somewhere else?

Thanks :-), most of them are D50 shots. A couple are from an old Canon S330 (Elph) and a couple are scans from a LOMO LC-A.

Edit: Mike, I wasn't trying to shove anything in your face. Just saying that the kit lens on the D50 is pretty cool although the D80 comes with a bangin one (18-135). And zoom is overrated imo.

Evan Wrote:never buy a camera from a shady operation like that. usually they are grey market, no warranty, no accessories, and they call you after you order it to try to get you to buy a bunch of crap with it

My mom bought 3 cameras (for me, my sister and herself - and if anyone asks for pics of my sister I'll cut your throat) from one of those shady places for xmas. After the order was placed they had to "call and confirm" it. They ended up getting talked into buying exra memory cards, bags, starter kits... i forget what else. But at least the deal on the camera was good....

The camera really wasnt what I'd want (Canon A620), so I called them to ask about an exchange for a Canon SD800IS and I'd pay the difference - they said it wasnt a problem so I shipped it back. Today I called to sort it out and they tried to tell me the original sale was on a $50 cheaper camera and the A620 was a "free upgrade". I really didnt believe them, so I called mom and asked - sure enough it wasnt, and I had to call and haggle with the guy to get the right amount on the exchange. I'll believe it when I get the camera in and see my visa statement though.

At any rate - stay away from these guys - http://www.thedigitalexpo.com/product.a ... d800&tab=1

overrated? that's like saying 5th gear is overrated. it allows you to do things you normally can't.

My parents got a Canon Powershot A540 for Christmas. It's still considered point and shoot right? It does take pretty good pictures though.

They havent refunded the $$ AND they havent shipped the camera. It is now "on backorder, its very hard to get" and they "guarantee I'll have it next week"

I am about to cancel the order, eat the $220 on the exchange and just go get one at Bestbuy.
