My buddy picked up a much less nice looking Bugeye a year ago for $8,000.

Looks good. Timing belt done, new struts, new clutch - all good things. Not sure on a fair market price, but the car looks solid.
As a data point - my 05 STi has 137k and counting. Only non-regular maintenance was the turbo blew at about 95k miles and had to replace one 02 sensor.... (knocks on wood)

Data point: I paid 6500 (I think) for my '02 bugeye, immediately did timing belt, water pump, and rad. Almost the same mileage, but mine had a dinged fender.
I think it's a bit high, personally, but the market for subarus has always been weird.

looks nice. a stage1 tune isn't enough to really hurt anything. maintenance looks up to date and they covered some good details (did the idlers with the t-belt). good oil change history if its true.
new radiator might be on the horizon, the turbo cars typically use them up between 100-150k miles. tranny and rear diff will want new fluid if its never been changed. see when the plugs were done too, just because they're a pain in the dick to do on the turbos since access is from the side.
i think its worth a test drive.

I wouldn't worry about this overmuch on a 2.0. Just sayin'. :dunno:

Yeah I'm not touching a 2.5.
Guy says he probably already has a buyer, but he'll get back to me if that falls through. Figured it wouldn't stick around long.

Finding a replacement for the Xterra is proving to be difficult. There are barely any unmodified WRX's out there at this point it seems like. Then add wagon-only and lower mileage as requirements and there are about zero to pick from.

I sent this guy a text for more pictures of the hail damage, but I could live with some hail dings on a daily driver if it's solid otherwise. We'll see how bad it is.

That's low miles, don't want to see the bottom of that car though.

Why's that? They barely get any more snow than us. Average for Harrisonburg is 21 in/yr, average for Philly is 22 in/yr. I wouldn't think it would be much more rusty than stuff around here typically is.

Really? I've just heard of more salting in the upper Northen coast area. Maybe that is just a wives tale.
I think the difference is not the amount of snow, but the amount of ice and how OFTEN it snows, but really the "rust belt" is more out midwest.
My truck is from PA and it's a pile of rust, but so is every other mid 90s to early 2000s Toyota.
Think I might have found a replacement if this works out. This guy finally got back to me last night after I emailed him a few weeks ago. $6000 for a 04 wrx wagon with 75k miles. It needs tires/brakes but otherwise is sound according to the owner.

I think I can probably find a set of wheels/tires from the Subaru people around here that I could loan/rent to get this thing back to Harrisonburg and if actually needed, I can replace the rotors/pads at his house before heading back. Apparently it has been setting around for the last 6 months or so because of tires being shit, but I'll see if it has actually been setting a lot longer than that for some other reason.

Have you asked about Rust? Allentown, PA + Subaru + 12 years = Fe2O3
1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442
Of course. Anywhere that isn't the south plus subaru = rust from what I've seen.
Still waiting on his second reply, hopefully it's not weeks away this time. I've asked for a lot more pictures, engine bay and underbody as best as he can.

Is working on a car in someone's driveway before buying it and driving it home a normal thing to do? Sounds sketch.

I would imagine it's normal if you're trying to sell a car that needs brakes before being driven. No one is going to get it towed for that shit.

Why haven't they put brakes on it? Surely if everything else was fine, they would do basic maintenance.
