"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Another +1 for Frontpoint.

I set our system so that my phone notifies me if the basement door is left open for an extended period of time. Tonight, my wife and I were doing a few chores in the basement and we both walked out the basement door to take trash out. I came back in the same door, but left it slightly ajar so my wife could get back in. She ended up coming in the front door, so the back door remained open. Thanks to the system, I noticed it well before bedtime and closed/locked the door. Given how little we use that door, it could have remained open for days.... or at least until we armed the system the next time.

So house is under contract, new house will start soon.

Starting to dig deeper into this Frontpoint stuff.

What sensors are you guys using, and how easy is it to link to a garage door opener for monitoring/closing when left open, or the thermostat to say drop the temp when it is armed and we are away or when we arm just before going to bed?

Learn me some home automation!

We have the basic window/door and a few glassbreak sensors. I didn't do motion because we have pets.

They have a garage sensor, but are getting ready to release one that will actually control the garage door. They recommended I wait for that product, so I did.

We have a smart thermostat that hasn't been installed because of house wiring issues. Once we do, Frontpoint will be able to control the temp. To do that, you need the upgraded monthly fee ($5/month), which also allows you to do more "smart" things like install a video camera. I'd like to do one of those at my front door in the next few months.

Good to know, right now I'm thinking...

4 doors (Front, Patio, outside into garage, and garage to house)

Garage door monitoring ( hey you left it open notifications, with an open/close function)

1 Smoke/co2 on each level

Thermostat control, House comes wired with an American Standard smart thermostat that is supposedly compatible with zwave)

I also saw their Cameras they offer, curious how much those are per.

I don't think the ability to control garage door is available yet, so you might have to wait there.

We have one smoke/co2 - I installed it at the top of the steps that are near our HVAC. We use unconnected smoke/co2 other places.

I think cameras are like $300 and require AC power. The upcharge for linking it is the same $5 you'd pay for any smart controller, like thermostat.

If you give them my name if/when you sign up, we'll both get a free month of monitoring.

Is that $5 per or just $5 a month for all the fancy connectivity

One $5/month upgrade covers all connected devices

I think I also got 30% off list for several of the products. I'm sure that's part marketing, but don't take the first quote equipment price you hear.

I have the garage door sensor and it does its job. You stick it on the backside of a panel and when the sensor goes diagonal / parallel to the ground it registers as open. This was especially important for me because that's where our home break in was. I'm personally not interested in an auto open feature as I'm a little tin foil hat-ish about providing physical access to your house through the internet (hence why I also won't buy smart /electronic locks).

I just set up an outdoor camera - it was pretty painless. I originally had a problem registering video, but that because my account wasn't yet set up for it and my computer was on a VPN (working). I called Frontpoint two separate times and the technicians were exceedingly polite and helpful. What's even better is they actually took my word for it when I talked through my situation vs. having to brainlessly follow their script. All in it was about 10 minutes.

Wow that's really solid. I've been massively impressed with Frontpoint so far. Might have to look into setting up two outdoor cameras. How much did it cost for your electrician to do it again?

$200. The camera is just an AC adapter, so we had a new outlet installed in the attic near the front door. He also installed the camera, which included drilling a hole through the fascia and mounting it to the soffit.

The features of the system are really nice. You can have it auto-capture clips when the alarm goes off, if motion is detected, or any of the sensors are tripped (e.g. other doors or windows). You can also use the geo-fence feature to not capture something if your cell phone is in a certain radius. Video clips are automatically uploaded to their site and there's a 1000 clip limit before it starts overwriting the oldest, non-protected clip. Perhaps the coolest part is you can have it email you the clips in MOV, MP4, or AVI format. It will also SMS the clips if 3GP or just a screen cap thumbnail. Of course you can always get a live view on the phone or the web at any time.

I'll post a clip in a few days/weeks, once we get a chance to mess around with it and I can host the video. Unfortunately there's no share or embed feature on the myfrontpoint website.

So Front Point is still the answer?

Got a close date on the new crib, 7/26, so I need to start making some decisions.

I think so. It's not often I'm as forthcoming with praise for a company or a product that I haven't been fanboi-ing for years.

If it matters, they're headquartered in nova and I get the impression all their reps are located there.

I saw a job listing for them recently to do content marketing. I thought it was another one of a million "security firms" around here that just tries to sell shit to the feds so I didn't apply, but maybe I should've...

I've been really happy with Frontpoint still as well. Their customer service is stupid good. My only real complaint is that the home base unit is kind of average. I mean I think it's a GE unit so it's good, but it's bulky and not all touch screen and stuff. I am guessing you could buy some kind of upgrade, I'm not sure. If we move into a new house though I will be keeping FP (basically just removing all the of the sensors and hardware and bringing it with me) but might look into a new home base that doesn't look like it came from the 90s

With the $5/month "smart home" upgrade, you can also bump up to a touchscreen panel.

Is it a free upgrade for the hardware or do I have to buy that again?

My biggest concern is how adaptable it is with other zwave products. Their website doesn't list compatibility with some products, but other Alarm.com based systems say they are compatible.

Google has produced no better info regarding compatibility.

House comes with an American Standard Nexia/zwave thermostat on both levels, but I see nothing about compatibility with front point anywhere. Also like the Schlage smart front door lock that is zwave, but no mention of it being compatible anywhere.
