"home false sense of security" :P - davej - 08-12-2014

Apoc Wrote:Maybe we should create a security/home automation thread and move this stuff there? I'd like to track progress/opinions independent of killing bad guys.

Cary on.

davej Wrote:I've been kicking around the idea of cameras, but ones that are real. Anyone have experiences to share? Took a quick look at a couple but they are wired, not real interested in running coax all over the house. Hoping to find a decent wifi system with remote viewing

Evan Wrote:I have 2 HD foscams , 2 SD foscams , and 4 Dlink SD cameras.

I like the Dlinks the best by far. They have great zero config cloud integration that doesnt require port forwarding, so remote viewing is much easier. they also come up in the viewer instantly.

The HD foscams are sharper, and have 2 way audio, so they make for good babycams, but are much slower and laggy to come up, and a pain in the dick to set for remote viewing.

I havent even bothered to hook up any of the foscams at my new place.

when my new zigbee/zwave box gets here, Im going to set up some automated video record actions when someone comes home, knocks on door, etc.

navin Wrote:There is also "DropCam" version of cameras -- seems pretty user friendly, but kind of sucks you have to pay for the cloud back-up for backing up video.

I need to do some more research, but I want something like the Drop-Cam, but with the ability to back to my Network attached storage.

ps. Be sure to lock down your FosCam's, lots of security vulnerabilities out there for it.

edit -- specifically looking for an outdoor camera.

Id call it home automation/smarthome...... home security is dumb Wink

edit... LOL

I've been really interested in this as well, will be following Smile

Re: automation/smarthome...... home security is dumb ;) - davej - 08-12-2014

my wish list for a camera system, having done practically zero research, is to find/build a system for ~$300-500 that has:

- 5 cameras (but expandable)
- outdoor/water proof
- infrared
- remote zoom
- wireless or ethernet option (bonus points for PoE)
- audio, either one or two way
- auto record on movement
- storage to local nas
- remote viewing including to mobile (would prefer not to have it cloud based if possible)
- email/txt alerts when movement is captured, maybe with a screenshot?
- applications/cameras support basic network security

Re: automation/smarthome...... home security is dumb ;) - WRXtranceformed - 08-12-2014

There are a ton of decent cameras and systems in the crazy amount of research I have done that are reasonably priced. The big challenge is, unless you have a one level home or a setup that lets you run cables from the attic down through a soffit, it makes it hard to do the installation without ripping open your walls unless you are very electrically inclined. As was said in the last thread, there are wireless cameras however they do still need power which you have to run from somewhere...I have read that their quality and reliability tends to suffer as well.

One thing I did read that was fairly straightforward about security cameras is that it's best to use ones that do not have an exposed wire. Look for ones that have the cord integrated into their support bracket, or better yet something shaped like this:

Any recommendations for a motion sensing, wireless (wi-fi), IR, outdoor camera that's worth the $? I basically want a picture of every car, person, or deer that walks/drives in front of my house. Seems like the only things that fit the bill are "game cameras" like these:

http://www.trailcampro.com/wirelesstrailcameras.aspx

....which might be fine. :dunno:

I never imagined anything my house was all that interesting. And, its insured... so....

This^^^. We live in a nice neighborhood but we do get sketchy people from time to time. My kid's safety comes before anything else.

Re: automation/smarthome...... home security is dumb ;) - navin - 08-12-2014

I only care about the Type-RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. I wanted to do an outdoor camera since some asshole threw a rock through one of my windows, but I might just do in the garage.

Re: automation/smarthome...... home security is dumb ;) - WRXtranceformed - 08-12-2014

Agreed, I live in one of the best, safest areas in Charlotte and well now I am hooking up a security system due to break in. To me it's less about the stuff and more about my family inside the house being safe

Re: automation/smarthome...... home security is dumb ;) - JustinG - 08-12-2014

Yea my main reasons behind the purchase were as follows:

Fire Monitoring - Fire station is 400yds down the street from my house, so one would assume they would get there in time.
Monitoring at night while asleep - people's balls have gotten bigger, and some crazy mofo breaks in at night I am gonna know about it and proceed to my night stand.

I did have an instance last summer where my alarm went off, (Balloon from Averie's bday party got caught in the ceiling fan and set off the glass break) I got a notification email, ADT called almost immediately afterwards, I told em to send the cops, 15 min later they called back saying the police did not report any issues. Now if it was a legit burglary, a good robber would have been in and out in prob the 20 min total of this interaction. But IMO most people will break a window, hear the alarm go off, and peace out.

Re: automation/smarthome...... home security is dumb ;) - .RJ - 08-12-2014

I get the Alarm, I dont understand the cameras.

Re: automation/smarthome...... home security is dumb ;) - WRXtranceformed - 08-12-2014

I personally do not want a camera connected to the internet inside my home but I understand why some people want them....especially if you have babies. I have been looking at exterior cameras because I would like my wife and I to be able to see who is outside the house (front door / back door / garage) even if we are on our third floor...and if someone is creeping around the neighborhood it would be nice to have video of it.

Re: automation/smarthome...... home security is dumb ;) - Apoc - 08-13-2014

Best I can tell, any exterior camera worth anything is $hundreds and requires a decent power hard wire. I don't think the technology is there for it to be cost effective. You could ghetto fab something, but I'd concerned about it easily being fooled, stolen, or disabled.

Re: automation/smarthome...... home security is dumb ;) - WRXtranceformed - 08-13-2014

Eh I mean there are some exterior camera solutions that are reasonably priced, HD, wide angle, night vision that would be just fine for home use, it's really just the logistics of the installation that are throwing me off right now. Especially for a townhome. Having an exterior GFI plug in for a camera just doesn't make sense to me from a security standpoint, you definitely should hardwire it and not leave any exposed wires. The trick is that you then have to run all of the video cables directly to a DVR unit. Wireless options exist but I keep seeing that the quality and ease of accessibility to the video feed is pretty rough in most cases.

The next house I buy if we decide to build new, I will probably prewire the house for exterior security cameras before close-in.

from other thread

Sully Wrote:What stops bad guys from unplugging your camera. They don't even have to cut a cord. That said, whats stopping them from cutting the cord. Of course i understand the concept is to catch vandalizing or thieves going after cars or are to inexperience to go for the camera. Or in Evans case, sounds like it could be used to see who's at the door/keep a record of it
I know! and they could totally spray paint it just like in the movies! Wink

I think youre looking at the purpose of a camera differently. Its not security. I dont use any home automation stuff for security and I think you're foolish if you do. Cameras dont *stop* anyone from doing anything. You dont have a security guard monitoring them. If you use them as deterrents then you have ugly ass cameras in obvious places. Good luck getting your wife to sign on to that.
Best case is maybe you got some video of the bad guy to help police (not) catch him later.
Personally I give no shits about what happens *after* a bad guy finishes does bad things.
The cameras are for information. Who is at the door, when the babysitter came, is my wife home, who came to my house, who is letting their dog piss in my yard etc.

but if I WAS using the camera for security, the best possible thing is for him to unplug it.
He just showed the camera up close his mugshot, and my home automation controller sends me an alert when the camera goes offline.

Re: automation/smarthome...... home security is dumb ;) - davej - 08-13-2014

even if you have to plug it in to an outside wall or leave wires exposed, if it's set to record on motion you should have the person in a few frames as the approach to disconnect the camera. (won't help if you're trying to check the feed for someone ringing the doorbell though.)

I've been wanting to put a few on the corners of the house to cover entry points and can probably run the cables from a unit in a 2nd floor closet on the inside of the soffit around to the cameras, but rough estimates puts me at 650-700 linear feet of cable, which just seems like a pain. maybe i should just pick up something like this to play with and see how it does. http://www.foscam.com/prd_view.aspx?id=208

Lee, yeah, if you're building prewire will be so much easier! might as well run some speaker and ethernet wires also
