they're called Jet Sprints and you figure only Kiwis would be drunk enough to stuff 1000hp smallblocks into a dingy the size of a picnic table. also, the courses are pretty nuts so they have a navigator telling them the turns with split second hand gestures, in like a foot of water. amazing!

these things must be super unstable because if you watch their hands, they turn the wheel about 15 degrees and can almost pirouette the boat around a needle. reminds me of some kind of mutation of superbike/rally/F1 in a puddle

Man that looks like it'd be fun to spectate live, and ride in at least once. They used to have a regatta at my grandparents up on the St. Lawrence river with all kinds of hydroplane boats. It was incredibly awesome to watch at 10-12 years old. I remember one going airborne at the last race I saw, but never put it together until I was older that maybe something really bad happened in that crash and my grandparents noped me out of there.
