Of couse - but there seems to be so many things that fall down to a matter of opinion with camera equipment. None of it is wrong.... just preference, but some people take it too far.

You know the secret to great pictures? Composition. It's what most people lack and why they take shitty pictures. It's the first thing you'd learn about in a class and the biggest step anyone can take towards fooling people into thinking you know what you're doing.
I harp on RJ all the time about it and even tried to give him pointers on the Dasha Bike shoot. He'll learn... eventually... maybe.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
Apoc Wrote:Taking a clear picture is not the point of a 50mm lens, it's just what you're using it for. You can do that with any lens. The point of the fast 50mm is the ability to dial the aperture way up. true, but the cheap canon 50 just happens to be very sharp.
I have a lot of fun with the big aperture of the lens. Low light shooting (although the AF isnt too hot in low light) and playing with the depth of field. I love to make the subject really pop out with a big aperture. Its too easy to go overboard though and make your DoF too shallow like I did with some flower shots

Say I'm already at f/4 and that's as low as I can go (in Aperture Priority Mode) with the UV off I can get 1/60 shutter, with the UV on I get like 1/15 shutter (and a blurry image). I can't stop it down anymore right?
We should have a shooting party. We can all hold hands and jerk off on each others' cameras!

No and it's probably a limitation of your lens. Exposure compensation isn't going to help you because it's just going to make your shutter open longer. Are you using a speedlight (hotshoe flash) and bouncing it off the ceiling?

I think the nifty fifty is an awesome lens for the price and can create some pretty artful shots if used correctly. I was looking into getting one but now all my money seems to be going toward track days... oops.
As for the external flashes... I'm mostly an outdoors shooter so I've never seen a need to purchase one but if you shoot indoors its a necessity I would feel. I know there are "flash caps" type things to soften up the light when taking pictures. My uncle who does professional photography was showing them to me and what an amazing difference it can make.
I'm interested in learning more about filters and what they can actually do to get correct shots in camera... most everything so far I've been able to fix with basic editing.
RJ, for the Sigma 17-70... check out Sigma4less.com. They normally have a large stock and have quite reasonable prices. Good vendor.

Yea I'm sure it's the lens problem but I'm not about to plop down $600 for a lens. The problem I described above was mostly shooting distance shots where the flash won't even reach to (yea, yea off camera lighting, I know)

The only time I don't use a flash outside is if I'm shooting landscape or architecture.

Did you say this was indoors? So you're shooting indoors with the UV and the flash won't reach? Can you give an example of what the subject is?

The only time I don't use a flash outside is if I'm shooting landscape or architecture. I've heard of fill flash but have never researched into it. I feel it could help tremendously but I have a lot of basic learning to go before I move onto a setup like this. I appreciate that link though Apoc, good read.

That article is pretty basic but there are TONS of articles around the net about how and why to use it. I just picked the first one on Goggle that seemed to make the point. Even if you're not using a speedlight (hotshoe flash) you should still be using the on-board for fill flash.
Here's an example of mine where a fill flash was absolutely necessary. You can see how her hat would make a shadow had I not used one. In addition to avoiding shadows in unwanted places her eyes also appear to sparkle as a bonus side effect.
Here's another one....
Uno mas to show it's not just with hats...

Back to the pictures! Ok... just one... I took some this evening but it was too hazy for anything to come out, or focus.
