Side note to cosmetics: I have switched to using just Sun Bum sunscreen and that shit is 10x legit. I love it. Just sayin'.

Switched to it last year after reading the articles about shitty brand name sunscreens.

I was not that impressed with the cool down but love their products but they will fuck up your clothes real quick if you're using it for things other than the beach.

Haha, no shiaat. I came in here on page one intending to ask "what's in the bin?" to help me get started, took a phone call, and now it's the cosmetics thread for ambidextrous amphibians with sunburn. :lol:

For real though, I've had a tent for a few years and we've only done one overnight and that was at Summit Point so not really camping. I want to get some supplies together and then head out with the boys somewhere with limited to no facilities and do some hiking / fishing. We weren't a camping family growing up so I only went a few times with a friends family, mostly Cunningham Falls in MD.

So, what's in the bins?

Ok, that's over I can be serious.

- North face 6 person tent (did I mention I hate this fucking abomination?)*
- Marmot 20* and North Face 40* bags. They're cheap, synthetic insulation, dont pack down particularly small or light but they get the job done.
- REI air mattress (packs down smaller than the big sleeping pads)
- Camping pillows
- Lumin Aid Lights
- coffee cups, plates, plastic silverware
- Jet boil
- Plastic french press (this is car camping y'all)
- Hammock & Straps
- Lantern
- Knife & Leatherman
- Flashlights
- Bug Spray & Epipen
- Twine, shock cord, small biners
- Basic toiletries

I think that's about it. Food just comes with us in a cooler if we're bringing anything that needs to stay cold.

*this goddamn tent, is awful. Its a pleasant place to spend time, has a nice 'garage' out front that will stay dry in a downpour, you can stand up in it with room to spare. Really, its not bad. But it takes 2 people to put the fucking thing up, because of the volume it stays colder when its not africa hot out, it takes up 25% of the bin.... we got it because my small 3-person tent was too cramped once we got a 2nd dog. And it was expensive. But happy wife happy camping. And yes I understand the irony of bringing a french press while complaining about my absurdly oversized tent.

We keep a plastic french press in our camping bin too.

Here's a few things we pack not on RJs list. It rain in the PNW and this bin doubles as our emergency kit, so it's a bit ovetstocked.

- dual burner camp stove
- cooking kit
- mess kits
- two 2" camp pads (fuck feeling every time my wife moves)
- two lengths of 50' rope
- bungee cord variety pack
- four pack lightweight tie downs
- duct tape
- tarp
- kelty fabric shelter and poles
- snap lights, hand warmers, hand wipes, and emergency blankets
- hatchet
- first aid kit
- ponchos that can double as shelter
- propane gas
- waterproof blanket

We have two cots and a queen size sleeping bag that travel separately. If I'm driving, I'm comfortable. I'm too old to bother with suffering for the fun of it. Same goes for the propane torch and welders gloves for making and maintaining a fire like a boss.

I also throw my jumper pack in the car. People like to leave car doors open when camping and getting stuck with no cell reception sucks. Ours has a cigarette lighter out, so it'll charge the shit out of anything that's USB in an emergency... Or if you're camping with phone addicts and don't put a squash on that.

I did all that shit growing up, including a multi-day survival course. No point in screwing with a lighter when starting a fire in the rain. No fire is just lame. You already have the gas for the stove, so all you need is the 6" nozzle and you have a fucking blowtorch. You can literally reach in the fire and grab a burning log with welders gloves. Poking sticks are for n00bs. They're also great for using dutch ovens in the fire.

Nice! I think I'll head over to our local Gandering-out-of-business Mountain and pick up some stuff. I know I have some of the more general items already around the house, but a dedicated pack is the way to go.

Not sure if it qualifies as glamping, but we've done a couple trips using small cabins at parks and have a trip coming up in a couple weeks in Shenandoah National. It's as close as I'll get the wife to actual camping. It's not been a bad option, but definitely limits the locations.

Last time I slept in the car was with my son at VIR before the IMSA race and it was pretty miserable. It started with bugs getting in as we tried to move things around (we got there pretty late) and then it was stuffy as hell. We both woke-up and were like yeah, needed the tent.

You know, as I was taking it down I remembered I hadn't, felt stupid.

But I didn't because the spot was cramped. I mean, again, my own damned fault, but I was basing my campsite on the size of another festival's campsites, which yes I know doesn't make any sense, but the flex + this huge goddam tent = room was pretty tight. They had us crammed in there like sardines.

you might as well call me Lord Of The Glamp because that's the only way i roll. honestly its more of just "this is what i need so my wife and kid are happy and we can all enjoy the experience more." at some point i definitely want to work my way up to hiking into a remote spot on my own or with a couple hiking buddies and just bushcrafting it or hanging out for a few days on limited supplies and hiking back out.

camping is really more of a convenience mechanism for me to either go flyfishing or hiking. you couldn't just plop me down with a tent in an RV campground and have me be a happy boy. i really like places that are pretty quiet and wild and help me take advantage of the closeness to natural features. we did exactly that last weekend:

if i was only buying for myself instead of 3 people at a time, i'd be looking instead at a better packing sleep system, smaller tent and a much more abbreviated cook setup, but this packs down "OK" for a small SUV and frankly makes the whole thing fun because we get to be outside but in some level of comfort. a lot of this equipment is pretty $$$, so i basically collected it all slowly over the past year as deals popped up during the holidays and seasonal clearances.

on the trip that picture was taken, we had bigtime rain the night we set up camp and having a good, solid watertight tent and some cover over the picnic table was priceless for being able to enjoy the weekend. really changed the game from being worried about constantly being wet to just being able to enjoy the weather and just sit under cover when we didn't want to be out.

i know it looks ridiculous but the utility factor is nuts. aside from the rain cover it gives, one wall is solid so you can store gear back in there like chairs, stoves, packs or shoes that you can't jam into the tent vestibule but you want to keep dry. there's also lines running all around the inside roof so you can hang wet towels and it has storage pockets for small stuff.

we use it at the beach too and the solid wall is an awesome wind break and sunshade.
