I do like the looks of the new M3s too, it's just that around Charlotte they are only driven by rich high school girls or complete f'ing middle aged douchebags that drive them like F1 cars through traffic.

Maybe you're just using the wrong word. Durable means it's around for a long time, doesn't wear out quickly. Ok, they might not be known for legendary electrical system reliability, (especially VW) and they probably don't "make 'em like they used to", but they never die.

My 155,000 mile old E36 M3 with intake and cat-back exhaust with a tune put down 230whp in 103 degree heat this weekend after dozens of autocrosses and track days. Itll last everyday all day on track. Now put it 2 weeks around town and the headliner will fall into your face

Gaining soft parts and becoming less physically capable. :x

Here's what I know from family, friends and clients:
Car 1992 BMW 3.....owner: uncle The motor just popped after 297,000 miles, had a private mechanic work on it regularly for maintenance and ran it for the last 100K of her life in temps 90-100+ 365 days a year in Texas for about 2 plus hours of commuting every. single. day. The thing ran beautiful for him and he cried when he had to part ways with it, since 92 he has never bought another car, and what did he replace it with....another blue 3 series which he'll probably run into the ground again.

I thought German cars were supposed to be the most durable out of any country? Maybe its just the old ones that were built to a standard not a price. I do like the new Merc styling a lot more than the new bmw's as well.

There's "Durable" as in "Can drive it across WW1 battlefield trenches" and then there is "reliable" as in 'Won't leave me fucking stranded staring at a Check Engine Light'. German cars are ONE of those, but not the other. Although, you're mostly correct. I think it really comes from racing. I mean think back to the Ur-Quattro days of audi, when they had Group B cars buzzing across the spanish countryside at 100+ mph...those things were (for the most part) rock solid. Then they stopped racing. Whups. Now you suck, Audi. That's what I'd like to believe, anyway.

Japan does mechanical and electrical great, not so much on the styling.
Germany does mechanical and styling great, not so much on the electronics. Italy does styling great, not so much on mechanical and styling. America does... commercials great?

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
