never buy a camera from a shady operation like that. usually they are grey market, no warranty, no accessories, and they call you after you order it to try to get you to buy a bunch of crap with it

Why dont you start out with a regular slr and figure out what you like in a camera before you jump into a muc h more expensive market.

PS- IF you need any help, my sister is a professional wedding/art photographer and attends the *sp* Corcoran Art school in photography.

film sucks, I have a EOS rebel 35mm and I never use it, buying and developing FILM cost way to much and takes way to much time. Score 1 for sams club upload pics and pickup by the time I get there.

I spent 180 dollars in one day on developing film a few years ago, that was the last straw. I'd like a Rebel XT in the future sometime. I like the camera I have now, its perfectly fine but I know i'll want more in a few years. FYI the Canon Powershot series of cameras is an excellent starter series

FYI the Canon Powershot series of cameras is an excellent starter series

i'm going to have to disagree unless you only mean the g7 or s3. the SDs and As are great for what they are, but due to the lens you're SEVERELY limited. i liked having an SD to tote around with me and use underwater, but it is by no means a good primary camera.

the d50 is a good camera to begin with. really, you can even start with less than that. you can get good shots with a point and shoot, but i feel it's an uphill battle there. some of the larger form-factor non-dslrs are pretty decent and don't force you to change lenses and such.

edit: also +1 on the SD series. they are NOT a starter camera if you're looking to get into "photography" but they are a great walking around camera. as mentioned above, you can take awesome pics with pretty much anything.

Thats what I meant about the A series Canons, I love mine and I can get some fantastic shots with it, it still magages to surprise me. Mike, I'd agree that the lens/zoom are their limiting factors, but honestly I hardly ever find myself needing anything more than what its got, yet...as Apoc said they are great handy cameras. Jammed with all sorts of cool features

you don't find yourself needing more beucase you can't get more trust me, there are a lot of shots you're missing without a solid zoom.

I know you didn't ask my opinion and you're going to say I'm hating just for the sake of hating or something about me being all knowing but I think that picture actually woulda benefitted from zooming out (with a tweak to the composition).

You either need to be closer in to make the crane the subject or farther out so you can see more of what's it's sitting on. I said zooming out is better because 1) you're already at 300mm and can't go any deeper and 2) you actually care what it's sitting on so you'd like to see more of that.

Regardless, you're right... a P&S will not do what what a dSLR will do with respect to zoom but there's something to be said for being able to easily walk around with your camera. I don't think you need mad zoomage if you're not into sports or nature thought. That said, I woulda been outta luck if I didn't have it in Alaska.

Yeah the rule of thirds is a really interesting concept...

My S3 actually has a feature where i can have the rule of thirds gridlines come up on the LCD screen when taking a picture which helps for balanced pictures

you're right, i wasn't looking for an opinion, i was trying to give an example of something you can't do without ridiculous zoom.

Thats true, I guess I just haven't come into contact with anything (like an animal) that would run away if I wanted to take a picture of it. I'm sure if I got more into nature photography etc i'd want one, but with the stationary objects I usually take pics of, i'll just position myself around them to get what I want. What would you say would be the best value DSLR? I mentioned the Rebel XT just cause I've been very impressed by what I've seen from them, but I don't really know whats out there

i'd do the exact thing i did last time, a rebel another limitation of the small cameras is you simply can't get the shutter speed to capture things on the racetrack.

the best motorsport shots IMO are with slower shutter speeds. there just isnt any life to the shots when the cars look like they are parked

that is INCREDIBLY difficult to do unless you've got some really nice lenses and a press pass, but i do agree

david, i've got a ton of photos on my website. pretty much all within the last couple years have been on my rebel.
