i still wouldnt get it. my like of 3er lines stops at the e46 coupes. after that it dies (too me at least). even e46s are pushing it.

from what i've seen on car and driver and read about, BMW did this with a partial intent to fill the price gap between the M3 and the 328ci (what used to be the 330ci). Another reason that i heard was that they wanted a high-power 3-series that was also somewhat fuel efficient since the e90 m3 will be moving to a V8. I think those two reasons alone are a good reason, but we'll see how well this will do in the market.

If i had the money i'd buy it, but i'd probably wait until the 2nd year of production so they work out most of the 'bugs'.

I think it's totally consistent with what BMW has always done with their range. As the performance ceiling of the M3 raises ever higher (400hp V8? Christ.) Then bmw "needs" a midrange sporty coupe. Now, what I'd like to see is this:

328, blah blah, buy this for a BMW.

335i, sport touring. Faster than an E46 M3, fast enough for you, extend your penis, how about a cabriolet? Sure, coming right up...fag. And hey, I mean, it's a sporty coupe if you're not totally hardcore. Lots of torque, good fuel economy, what's not to love?

M3, for serious contenders only. CF Roof, CF front panels, spartan interior, supportive cloth seats. No sunroof, no convertable, no leather, no bullshit automatic. Oh, you want leather? Fuck you, go buy a 335i.

Now, that won't happen, the M3 will be even MORE of a heavy pig eurotrashluxosport coupe, but it'll be fast as the dickens, and no one will care.

That would be an awesome ad brochure in dealership.
