I think I'm leaning toward the Ram at this point. It's a nicer interior than the Titan which will be appreciated for road trips and commuting, but not nearly as expensive as the Benz. Seems like a nice GL550 is ~40k which I really don't want to spend. I am hoping to get a Ram to squeak in at $30k or a bit below.
The Excursion was a silly idea that I knew would involve a front end rebuild and would still suck to drive. I think the biggest perk with the newer trucks is a transmission with more than 4 gears.
I'll still go drive a Titan, but the Rams feel more "me" I think.

you can get a 2016ish 1500 Ram with LOW miles for your price range... just hunting around quickly. you'll want to dial in interior desires to find the right one.

Yeah. I like the looks of the Sport trim (no chrome) and they mostly seem to have what I want for heated seats/wheel and trailer brake controller. I think all Sports got the 8" Uconnect touchscreen. A few got leather vs. "sport cloth" and that included A/C seats, which would be nice but not mandatory.

get ready for your cracked exhaust manifolds. two of the guys I ride with in the vanpool both had cracked exhaust manifolds. one guy went full header to tip exhaust... the other one just waits for the track to warm up and have the sound go away.

I was really impressed with Uconnect on a rental dodge I had. Beats every other infotainment I’ve ever used or seen. Color me shocked!

Toureag TDI with tow package? Used 2013s are in the $16k range and a '16 is mid $30s. 7700lbs max
Just throwing that out there. No idea on reliability.
I've put like 8,000 miles on the truck already and been super happy with my Sport. Send itttt

I've abused the crap out of my Tundra for the last 100k miles ... its ugly, works hard, and is reliable as all get out.

Still a short wheelbase, but they tip the scale north of 5000lbs, so it won't get pushed around too much.
Plus with the ford in the shop so much, you'll be well prepared for vw ownership.

I love that video, bwahaha.
fun fact: i believe that V10 TDI uses a cam timing system that is built entirely of gears. like, no belt, no chain. just a big clockwork assembly that never needs touched.
edit: yes its a massive timing gearset. go to 3:00 in

gear driven cams are neat. way better than the rube goldberg timing chain setup in an audi v8....
that said, I wouldnt touch a V10 TDI Tourag with a 10 ft pole.

I would eagerly own another Range Rover, my eleventh BMW, or a Mercedes-Benz.
A V10 TDI Touareg sounds absolutely horrific to own. They were very cool when new but aged like milk left out on a DC summer day.
Talked to a friend about Merc GLs last night, he owned a 2009 for 80k miles and knows a ton about them. Said I should strongly consider one and try to get a "test tow" in. He pulled some big things with his. The 2013-2013 GL450 is a biturbo V8, like the GL550, but costs $10k less than a GL550 and can be tuned to make 550 levels of power for less than 10 G's.
It is, still, a thought. We're on day 12 of offer acceptance and Ford has up to 45 days, legally, to respond. I plan on nagging the BBB every Thursday until I hear back. Would really love to go car shopping and NOT drive an AC-less 2001 X5 around but that's my option for the moment.

Can you get one with CPO/Extended warranty? Even then you likely only have 1-2 years left on that...

What are the odds you're going to spend 10 grand to upgrade a used 450? That sounds like a pipe dream

I'm not gonna upgrade a used 450, but it's $10k cheaper and about as capable. Still totally unsure if I want to try that direction or not. Thankfully I have endless days of soul-searching left until Ford takes this red truck back.
